As the title suggests I'm pondering the idea to start a Tyranid army.
A more Close Combat focused one at that to mix it up from my big shooty Ad-Mech.

I really love the look and feel of the Mawloc and Haruspex with their giant mouths and all.
As for the Hive fleet I find myself liking the Leviathan or Jormungandur

What is everyone else opinion of the new Tyranids and advice they have for a prospective collector?

In Warp Transit to next battlefield location, Destination Unknown

I would recommend the following, Hormagaunts and Genestealers for troops. Lictors for Elite choices. Carnifexes, Trygons, and Mawlocks for Heavy Support. The Swarmlord with Tyrant Guards for HQ. Ravemers for Fast Attack.

Your entire force would be melee based if that is what you are aiming for.

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

A few thoughts:

1) The current getting started boxed set is a great choices; its all close combat based and you get the mawlock/trygon sprue and a broodlord (which is in effect free with the discount). Two or three getting started kits would give you several mawlock/trygon to make use of combined with a nice solid core of genestealer troops. If you can you could try and get a hold of the previous getting started kit to get a hold of a hive tyrant as well as it seems that some places still have stock of the old geting started.

2) Hive Fleets are going to be the confusing part of this edition for people; but in general they are nothing but a stat adjustment. This is to say that there is really no official colouration for Tyranids and even within their own fluff fleets will drastically change colours for combat reasons.

As a result it doesn't matter what you paint your miniatures as; they can belong to any fleet. So treat Hive fleet rules as a simple modifier for your army rather than strictly limiting it to a specific fleet.

Glad to hear my ideas aren't completely useless

I'll be converting a lot of them as the general idea behind my army will be they invaded a Necron tomb world and as a result have adapted into using their living metal against them.
Thank you all for the advice!

Well Jormongadr can make for an awesome Big Bug line, as they get Cover so they can withstand an Alpha quite well, so Tyrannofexen, Carnifexen might be good units....Leviathan needs to be in close Synapse to get the 6+++, so MCU Warriors might be a good choice.

Otherwise most of the Codex is good to very good, so you can try multiple units.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER
