I'm going to be pessimistic unless something can prove otherwise. We all know the way things have been going recently this is doomed to failure from the conceptual stage.

I would argue that Pixar has avoided sequel let downs in the past and hopefully it can do so again.

I enjoyed the first one. I'll give this one a go.

Unlike Marvel films, Pixar has a pretty good track record with sequels being good. They wouldn't have waited 13 years to make a sequel if it were simply a money grab.

I want it to be good but given Disneys habit of spewing out utterly worthless sequels I do have a smidge of concern

It depends. The first half to three quarters of the original was good. But then I felt like I was being bludgeoned non-stop by moral anvils for no apparent reason. If they stick to parts that made the first one good and toss the terrible parts, it might be interesting.

But then again the original didn't screen to a market absolutely flooded by superhero movies and comic takes on superhero movies. This one has a good chance of being swamped by overload, burnout and overexposed cliches.

I mean, it was a Pixar movie for kids about supey-heroes that like most Pixar movies had just enough wry, nudge & wink stuff and emotional heart in there to keep adults interested as well, why would you be expecting complex and nuanced moral philosophy?

EDIT: And as for "superhero burnout" - Thor: Ragnarok, the third film in one of the less-loved sub-franchises of the MCU just opened a couple of tens of millions above expectations at the US box office. People keep insisting we're right on the edge of a "crash" in the popularity of superhero stories, and yet we keep failing to tip over that edge. At this point it's beginning to get to the stage where the superhero genre-doomers are like those weird little religious sects that pop up every few months insisting that no really this time the world is totes going to end at 7:45pm next Saturday.

I think it will do just fine. Pixar have a mostly good track record with the ' kids movies with stuff for the adults' format that other animation studios have copied.

A closer would be all those doomsayers shouting that GW is going to fail 'any day now'.

GW got themselves in big trouble a few years ago but they managed to turn it around.

It's inevitable that superhero films will eventually fall because all things fall. Remember the cowboy movie?

I don't think it's the same audience for The Incredibles and Thor: Ragnarok.

Actually, I think it is closer than you think.

As in, very close.

My main concern is its not the same Pixar as 2004, and post Toy Story 3 the Pixar hit/miss ratio has been sliding further towards a coin flip, although admittedly 'Disney' made very Pixar movies with Wreck It and Moana so maybe a strange talent redistribution could account for the uneven output.

I think we might have hit peak 'overwrought, overbudget, po faced' Super with DC plissing money up the wall playing catch up and still not managing to get close to the bland and overlong Age of Ultron, yes Wonder Woman was ok but still about 30mins too long and didn't quite go full tilt on the outright silly parts of the mythos

The Incredibles isn't a Marvel or DC superheroes film, though. It's a family comedy-drama action film based on generic superhero tropes which have an overlap with "spy-fi" stuff.

that just also happens to be the greatest Fantastic Four movie ever made...(even the 'wrong' bits ie Dash being a Speedster outshine all the FF movies), along with being like you say a worthy homage to 60/70's spy-jinx

Actually I think that all of the other superhero films around at the moment could work in their favour; it gives them a lot more material to satirise / feed off.

I still think that it is possible to make a great Fantastic Four movie too.

You just might have to set it in the 60's - at least to start...

A 60's Marvel movie could be fun, I think Dr Strange should have been fun set in the 60's then have the Eye misfire to bring him current

I think people are missing my point. There are lots of people who are really interested in the Fantastic Four and suchlike traditional Marvel/DC super heroes, and there are lots of successful super hero films catering for this audience.

The Incredibles may well appeal to the same audience, but my point is that it has a great appeal to people who aren't really interested in super heroes.

E.g. in my family, neither my wife nor daughter have the slightest interest in super heroes, and I'm only really interested in Marshal Law. Yet, my daughter has already asked for a family outing to The Incredibles 2 and it doesn't even open until next June.

The Incredibles appeals to children, a far far larger group.

Eh, up to a certain age for the purposes of capitalism a child's "wealth" is essentially whatever their parent's is. It seems like nobody quite grasps how relentless children can be in badgering their parents until they are parents - a couple of my pals who swore up & down their kids would be "better behaved" than all the squalling brats we were annoyed at as younger adults now have young kids themselves, and quelle surprise their kids are squalling brats and after they wheedle and whine enough the parents cave in and take them to see the film/go to MacD's/buy them the toy. They maybe only cave in one time out of five, but there are enough young children that one of five still means plenty cash and often more than an adult will spend on themselves.

I ought to point out that my daughter is 18 years old.

Good film. Not as good as the original but still excellent. Liked it better than Ragarok and I saw that one free.

Man I felt for the dad being a dad. Been there!

Dunno how I missed this thread. Took the family to see this opening weekend and we all enjoyed it. I like the first better but my god this one is hilarious! Very good sequel
