Now that we have a FAQ on how ambush and grinding advance works, what are you planning on ambushing and why?

I have been toying with a few different ideas ranging form a lord of war, 9 sentinels, or a few tanks. Would love the thoughts of those more tactically experienced than myself.

It seems you can only bring in a Baneblade if you dont equip it with sponsons. The sponsons make it stick out just slightly more than the 7" allowed.

Three Squads of Plasma Veterans, with an Officer with the Dagger + his Command Squad.
9 Plasmaguns + 3 Plasma pistols re-rolling 1's is an acceptable amount of damage when paired with a Battlion of Scions.

A squadron of two hellhounds (I would do three in 2K point games) and two units of rough riders.

I have a unit of three cyclops demolition vehicles I’m going to try one of these days.

Didn't the FAQ say only one vehicle was allowed?

The FAQ States:

Page 136 – Ambush
Change the second sentence to read:
‘Choose up to three Tallarn units to be set up in
ambush instead of placing them on the battlefield (only
one of these units can have the Vehicle keyword).’

Add the following sentence:
‘The units are considered to have moved their
maximum distance.’

So my plan of 9 sentinels would not work. However, I do not see a restriction on a full unit of LRBTs, Sentinels, etc. Thoughts?

Roughriders?

You don't need Tallarn for that, they get outflank on their own don't they?

Anyhow, I go with two hellhounds, but am willing to do two basilisks or two LRBTs depending on what I'm facing. That plus two squads of basic infantry w/ plasma guns.

A single full unit of Russ/Sentinels/Cyclops Demolition Vehicles is fine. Be aware that Sentinels do not have the 'vehicle unit' rule so remain as a unit after deployment.

The FAQ means I'm probably not ambushing anything. If I want to reserve infantry, I would take Scions.

It just feels too restrictive to me, though I hope someone explains why I'm wrong.

My Tallarn 23rd force is ambushing with practically the same thing it used back when we could outflank with Al'Rahem in the 2009 IG Codex:

-Al'Rahem (although now he's a company commander with the dagger, a plasma pistol, and a power sword)
-his dagger-allowed accompanying platoon command squad with 4 flamers (athough now I'm using an SWS with 3 plasmas)
-3 infantry squads of 10 troopers, each with plasma gun (although now instead of bringing missile launchers each squad brings a plasma pistol on the segeant)

It's a fun, outflanking force that feels like a return to the 2009 Codex (I hated the 2014 Codex with a passion for the fact that it took Al'Rahem away from me).

Here are some images of my Tallarns outflanking this month:

Outflanking against Ad Mech.

Outflanking against SW...sadly scout sentinels can no longer outflank, but they are so fast that the quickly link up with outflanking platoons, as seen in this image

The FAQ specifies that a squadron of vehicles counts as a single unit for the ambush strategem. So you can outflank a unit of 3 hellhounds, 3 Russes, 3 sentinels... As long as the other two units aren’t vehicles (or you don’t have to ambush with more than one unit). You have to place them within 6” when they ambush, but after that they move independently—except sentinels who go as a unit.

Somone on another thread mentioned ambushing a superheavy, like maybe a stormlord full of ogryns or a stormlord with 18 heavy weapon teams who can all shoot from the firing deck. But I think there’s an issue with the sponsons being too wide?

I think you can only include 2 additional units inside the Stormlord for a total of 3.

You can outflank with 1 pair of sponsons if you put them on the same side.
