Just so you can save yourself looking in the book itself, a Supreme Command Detachment gives 1 CP, and requires 3 HQ choices, with a maximum of 5. Additionally, you can optionally field 1 elite and 1 lord of war.

I get the Elite slot to some degree, it allows you to field a bodyguard of the same faction for your HQs...But why the Lord of War? What benefit is there to having the Lord of War inside the detachment?

Yes those are common choices but would game be better or worse if those couldn't be taken so easily AND spam psykers AND get commnad points all at once...

Yet that's why the Lord of War slot is there. Would it really be a Supreme Command detachment if you couldn't take your Supreme Commander because he's a Lord of War?

OOOH I get what you mean now. The fluffy point of it is that the Lord of War can be taken as your "supreme commander", with the 3 HQs underneath him....GOOOTCHA, makes sense now.
