So I’ve got the new trygon genestealer starter kit an it comes with two of the ygmarl heads the one with tentacles I presume and I was wondering in the codex it doesn’t say genestealers can take the ygmarl factor but doesn’t it only work for them if somebody could explained that help a lot?

They dont exist as a rules entity.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

But they still appear as a bio artifact which mentions genestealers specifically so does the artifact apply to any unit or just genestealer also would it apply to one model or the whole unit?

Fluff doesnt equal rules, not every bit, head, etc.. has rules anymore, over the years not even every kit had a purpose for many bits, but they were added as conversion pieces, some did have a use and then that use was removed.

Edit: Artifacts have their own rules, read the artifact rules, it tells you what can use them.

The tentacle head was originally used for the Feeder Tendrils upgrade, back in 4th edition I think.
Feeder Tendrils is now a stratagem, so the head is just cosmetic.

Same with the Implant Attack head (the one with a big carapace section covering the eyes, and a jaw on the end of its tongue). Used to be an upgrade, now a stratagem.

TDLR: that artifact is only for a single model and cannot be taken by genestealers in a genestealer squad. Technically no such thing as "ymgarl genestealers" any longer. I think their intent is for the feeder tendril heads to represent this, which I believe a lot of people are using as "acid maws"

Plus you can still use the feeder tendrils stratagem on them, so that feels fluffy at least.

This. Granted, if you wanted to represent Ymgarl Genestealers you could take your Feeder Tendril-equipped models and run them as GSC Purestrain Genestealers. Their ability to pop up almost anywhere is fairly close to the old Ymgarl Genestealer deployment rules and their belonging to a separate faction is wonderfully fluff appropriate for creatures that the Hive Fleets actively shun.

You don’t get enough special heads in a box to represent flesh hooks and acid maws, so the Cthulhu heads can help with that.

But you do.
Each sprue of 4 genestealers comes with 1 of each special head, which is exactly enough to represent them in the current rules.

Maybe you're thinking of previous editions where it was not enough, because back then you had to give every model in the unit the same special head.

No, they come with 2 of the same sprue (each one is a 2 part spur) and there are 9 heads on each sprue, only 4 of them are the special heads (one being Ymgral).

You only get 2 of each head.

Which ... is exactly enough to fully represent acid maws and flesh hooks in the current rules. Is it not?
