Lost in Space finally has a launch date. Netflix has announced that its reboot will lift off on Friday, April 13 — a decidedly unlucky day for the Robinson family.
The drama, which was ordered to series last June, will take its cues from the original ’60s series. Set 30 years in the future, the Robinson clan finds itself among those first selected to colonize space. They are forced to come together and forge new alliances after crash-landing on a lost planet, which is light years from their intended destination.
Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Molly Parker (Deadwood) play parents/scientists John and Maureen Robinson, while Taylor Russell (Falling Skies), Ignacio Serricchio (General Hospital) and Parker Posey (Louie) round out the cast as daughter Judy Robinson, blue-collar contractor Don West and the manipulative Dr. Smith.
Loved this show (in syndication!) as a kid - cautiously optimistic here...
I grew up on Lost in Space, thanks to my father. I have a stash of old VHS from when he recorded episodes he loved.
We went and saw the film opening day.
This whole series lives or dies by how fething irritating the kid playing Will comes across for me. Nothing spoils a show faster for me than a whiny kid, or a kid actor that can't.

Agreed. It doesn't need the high camp of the original, but lets please not have yet another 'everyone is an amoral gakhead' show.
I hope they keep the retrofuturism look of the Robot, too. Preferrably an actor in a decent suit, rather than a completely CGI thing to break immersion.

Agreed on both points - but especially on the first one!

Ha. I really enjoyed the movie. I mean the CGI monkey thing was terrible. But the rest of the movie was a funsci fi romp. Looking forward to this show.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I thought it was great fun and it certainly didnt make nonsense outlandish claims about being groundbreaking or "intelligent" scifi - it was just a fun romp

I assumed she was the pilot character, all set for some same gender/interracial sexual tension (or both?)

Toby Stephens as John Robinson, the expedition commander
Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson, a fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer who makes the decision to bring her family to space for a chance at a new life on a better world
Ignacio Serricchio as Don West, a roughneck smuggling luxury goods on the side who finds in the Robinsons the family he never thought he would find
Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson, John and Maureen's eldest child
Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson, one of the Robinson children
Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson, the youngest Robinson child
Parker Posey as Dr. Smith
and
In the year 2046, The Robinson Family and the spaceship Jupiter 2, one of several Jupiter ships, encounters a rip in spacetime and crashes on an unknown planet. Stranded light years from their intended destination, the Robinsons and other colonists marooned with them battle a strange new alien environment and their own personal demons as they attempt to leave the planet
and...uh oh...this:
Toby Stephens, speaking about the distinction between the original series and the new show:
"It’s a very clever, modern reworking of a great story. Lost In Space is Swiss Family Robinson in space, so it was a story that existed before Lost In Space. The fundamental story is that it’s a family that is lost in a difficult, life-threatening situation and how it challenges them and brings them closer together. That is essentially what the story of this is, it’s just the context is a lot more modern. It's a more modern take on the '60s version. If you look at it now, it's charming, but it seems so innocent. Whereas this is a version that is for our time. I’m hoping it will still have humour and humanity in it, but it has obviously gotta be for a modern audience."

All sounds good to me. At least in broad strokes. We need to see more first.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal
Out of all the upcoming stuff, this is really high on my list. Not only is the premise something I really like, I have always loved Parker Posey and Molly Parker is great too.
The 13th can't come soon enough IMO.

Sooooooo... Dr Smith is now an evil Counselor Troi? She's clearly the ship's psychiatrist, and looks like she is suffering from multiple personality disorder or something. Maybe they will use that to explain how the old Dr Smith went from evil incarnate in episodes 1 to 3 and became the comic relief from episode 4 onward.
I just hope they use a version of the opening theme from the latter seasons of the old show for their opening theme in this one. The later opening was upbeat and exciting and catchy.
