Subject: Necron Redesign and the Morality of leaking a codex?

So someone is basically (at this very moment) leaking basically the entire Necron Codex. As a none Necron Player I wonder how everyone feels about this in both the sense:
1. The army is supposed to have had a whole new "Redesign" according to rumours from everyone. I'm not a Necron players so is this the case and does stuff look good or is it all just stupid hype rumours?
2. How do you feel about the codex leak months before it comes out? Honestly, as an Ork player, I don't know how I feel. It kind of ruins the fun and build up. I love leaks but only if they are spread out! It keeps me refreshing pages and the likes... but having all the info I could want at once does just feel like Christmas is over before the day even arrives. Also you have all the Moral issues... GW entrusts members with Codex samples (or shops) and when you leak the whole thing you kind of ruin it for everyone else. If I was GW I wouldn't want to ever give my codex out to anyone! Leaking a week before everyone gets the codex is one thing but 2 whole months? What do you think?

I have no problems with leaks like this. If the content is good, it'll still excite people. It shouldn't need to be curated by the GW community team to be exciting. As for the whole redesign thing, I don't think there'll be many changes between the Index and Codex. It's probably just overhype.

1. Redesign is a strong word. Yes they will have Dynasty traits and probably point decreases across the board but several of the issues that plague them now will most likely continue to be an issue - RP being one of them. Hopefully there will be stratagems and other rules that will help them with this and give them more staying power.
2. Seriously? I'd suggest avoiding Dakka and most well known Tabletop news sites if you don't want anything spoiled. I don't mean this in a negative way.

I don't mind spoilers but they have to be spread out. It has to be a fun gold mining experience not a "here is everything... now wait 2 months for the printed version". Like the Tau. We got mostly everything like a week before the youtubers did it all. That's fine for me because it was fun getting all the drips.

"redesigned", "overhauled" etc. These are words we've heard before. It's bs in all likelyhood, the codex will be mostly the same as its index version but with points drops and added rules from traits and strategems. The units will all likely function in the same manner as before and will have the same stat-lines for the most part. This has been the case for all prior releases, no reason to assume otherwise for this one. As for leaks. Eh?

Bit of an over-reaction there. Necrons will be released within 2 weeks. Likewise with Tau. Rumors only started coming in a couple weeks before preorder.
There was a time where this forum would have killed for this sort of information on a regular basis, instead of the 6 month dead silence from GW at a time.

The earlier the better because it means I can prep army for the release and get models painted or repainted or repaired or bought.
Saying that, without a full picture including points and the datasheet they're basically no use other than for getting hyped. C'tan shards could have an amazing datasheet but if its been bumped to 500pts then its pretty useless.

If the book is printed then GW is just exploiting your love of waiting for the next tidbit. It's been supposedly good for their business to continuously have things being released to keep people interested, but I'm not sure it's been good for the game to have index vs codex for so long.
I'll admit to being salty though, having bought significantly into this game then immediately ending up with a non-competative army for a year. And with the T'au codex being leaked piece by piece I was going mad with not knowing how any of it would work together, having something to think about but being a total waste of time to consider.
If anything I am relieved about these necron leaks. From what I've heard so far they have much better than average traits which is good since many others are uninteresting.

It's not a big deal IMO. This is a slow hobby. Painting and collecting an army is a long term commitment. If the army interests you, you will get the book regardless. It will probably just drive drive up Forgebane pre-orders.

Honestly, GW should be releasing the rules for free. Hyping book releases instead of playtesting with a wide community of gamers leads to an inferior game. The fact someone is leaking the book is just more honest.

To give my thoughts on the leak, looks like what happened was a playtest image of the dynasty rules got leaked. GW used the code built into the image to figure out which player leaked it, then booted him out of the beta process. Software like digimarc gives you this ability off of the shelf for a sub 100 per license price point. Then they released the dynasty codes thinking the matter was done. The leaker thinking he now had nothing to lose, leaked more images. The problem will of course be that he does indeed have something to lose because they are going to sue him for his breach of the NDA. I imagine we'll hear about a GW vs. some poor schmoe here in the next week or two. I suppose the other option is he will claim his computer was compromised and a hacker is releasing them for the lulz.

Expect a Warhammer Community article tomorrow showcasing Tomb Blades and Solar Pulse lol. They are usually quick to release articles when these leaks come out ahead of schedule.

"Basically the entire Necron Codex" has not been leaked, not even close. We've seen what, the <dynasty> codes, datasheets for 5 units and 3 stratagems?
1) From what's been leaked so far, there's no sign of a "redesign", with the exception of one of the codes making necrons very fast if they advance.
Reanimation Protocols might have drastically changed however (we don't know yet) which could be considered a big change.
2) "Two months"? Where are you getting your info from? The codex goes up on pre-order in a few weeks.
Leaks at this stage is fine. I personally prefer a couple of leaked dataslates/rules in order to create hype over complete silence.
As for the moral aspect, codex-leaks doesn't hurt GW in any way or form; if anything it creates hype and brings attention to incoming releases. It's PR. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's GW themselves who either use backchannels in order to leak stuff themselves, or allow certain individuals to leak certain things.

I can get excited about things being slowly leaked for a week, maybe two, but eventually it just starts annoying me and I stop paying attention. Malign Portents was an example of this. I was super stoked at first (I started a Death army last summer) but eventually I soured on it and haven't bothered to go back to the website even though I've heard they have a bunch of cool stuff on it now.
Morally if people agree not to share information about an upcoming codex they shouldn't share it, but once the info is out there I'd don't see anything morally wrong with passing it around. I don't think it really hurts GW or the hobby (I'm assuming most people who would be inclined to buy the book will end up buying it anyway). The biggest downside is when there are partial leaks that are incorrect and/or lead to assumptions being made without having the context of the whole book.
I think one of the better things about leaks is it gives people time to start assembling and painting in advance of the book dropping.

This is absolutly the case. Unless you think the leaks happening on the same day as the Forgebane preorder announcment went up is just a wild coincidence.

I'm seeing no evidence whatsoever of any redesign.
In fact, I'm already seeing glaring issues that have been left uncorrected (for example the current "transport" rules).

I would far rather have the whole thing leaked in one go, allowing me to peruse it at my leisure, than to only see titbits, spread out over a week or so and buried in pages of GW marketing blurb.
As to the moral issue, I don't particularly care. In an age where most companies hand out their rules for free, GW gets no sympathy for charging £30 per codex.

I like leaks. I wish GW would adopt the "Community Integrated Development" approach like Privateer Press recently did, where things go through a curated feedback loop BEFORE they come out to catch major inconsistencies/bugs and provide feedback so the overall product is better.
IMHO GW does a gakky job of leaks anyways. For one, they curate what they show. Then, if you ask anything about something else coming up, their Facebook plays dumb with a "We haven't heard anything about that yet, keep checking Warhammer Community for info" kind of thing when we know it's a bunch of gak; they will reply that way to legit questions and it comes off as condescending.

Leaks build hype, plain and simple. However, there is a difference between community leaks and GW community page reveals.
For me, and a lot of others, the community leaks are so so so much more informative and interesting to see. They tend to have a lot more information and a lot more “sensible” context. GW Community however, tend to only reveal very limited information and often accompany it with over hyped “synergies” and naively attempt to direct players into certain directions. Don’t get me wrong, their reveals probably reach a far wider audience, but, often their comments and ideas fall apart pretty quickly when the rest of the information is revealed.
Leaks also help people make decisions around purchases. Getting good, reliable leaks early on allows people to plan, rather than having to wait 2-3 months+, after their codex is signalled for the next release, to plan their next army expansion. For example, if I was a DE, Necron of T’au player, I wouldn’t have brought anything for my army the moment they got revealed as the next codices, at the LVO in Jan. Early leaks allow that to reduce – if only slightly.

There is a 100% full leak on youtube right now.
Here is why this is bad.
It could convince the bean counters at GW that the current methods are too risky and get the team to pull back on playtesters. The community has nothing to gain with being this impatient.

As much as I like the new GW I can't ever see that happening.

How do you even apply to be a beta tester in the first place?

There is a 100% full leak on youtube right now.
Here is why this is bad.
It could convince the bean counters at GW that the current methods are too risky and get the team to pull back on playtesters. The community has nothing to gain with being this impatient.
And here is why its good.
They told us that Necrons were getting a redesign, which they havent, the got index +1 like other phoned in books, will they be good, too early to say, but the book is bland (opinion).
It also allows people like me to actually judge the book prior to dropping any money on it, which I will now not be doing, in fact as far as I am concerned they have had all the chances I am willing to give 8th and the continued blandification of the Ed has finally driven me away, I will be sticking to 30k, necromunda and blood bowl and not play 40k, its just not the game I want to play.

How do you start a thread about a leak without posting a link to the leak?
This thread fails to deliver.
1/5 since I have to go Google it now.

Well, firstly, you don't ever have to buy the book right away and there's always a review the same day the book comes out.
This is just McDonald's culture.
You've applied your own value judgement on what redesign means. They weren't ever going to make Necrons vastly different from what they were. You're entitled to your opinion, but to the entitlement of information that you suggest.
That said I don't consider digital piracy a crime.

posting a link would be ironic because of the whole morality of things. There are plenty of other threads that go into details on the links in the news section. This is just here to talk about the morality of it, consequences of it and overall thoughts.
In addition, do you think GW now makes super bland codex stuff to please the WAAC players and Tournament hosts? If you make it bland then it's easy to know what is powerful and easy to play but you make it fun and fluffy then it might not always be easy to understand and easy to win with.

I don't know how you would make a, literally, mindless bunch of robots flavorful. They shouldn't be free thinkers they're just there to be cannon fodder.
Somehow you're trying to make this a WAAC v CAAC thread. Why?
