The very fact that the Marines feel the need to go full-auto on encountering these guys is meant to reinforce their threat.

Honestly the thing I like most about the Astartes portrayal of Marines is their absolutely zero BS, zero feths given attitude and how that comes through so clearly in the animation even though they're fully armoured and helmeted. At no point do these feel like just blokes in armour, they're utterly inhuman uncaring killing machines. I really hope the folks making the GW-sanctioned animation take note of Astartes(in a non-legal way) and seek to emulate that aspect of it, at least during the battle sequences - no doubt we'll get some soapy "Brruthah! I am emoting Brruthah!" scenes in there, but when it comes time for the pew-pew this is how Marines should be.

Terrific piece of animation.
Couldnt really find a fault with it.

Love the way when the second marine severs the psy connection the first dosent hesitate for even a nano second and knives the guy.
Really captured the feel of Space Marines.

On the bolter fire, the way they brace the guns against the railing to stabilize the full.auto.is very cool.as well.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Man, this was the first episode i've seen of this and it was absolutely killer. I loved that there was no talking. Almost seemed like an episode of Samurai Jack.

These are super awesome.

Couple more interesting points - the double depress on the Bolter triggers to go full auto was a nice touch. The displays on the Bolters were just showing fresh magazines being loaded I think, that or for full rate of fire, not full auto.

The struggle of the squad sergeant against the power of the second psyker conveyed by the short reveal of the targeting iris following his eye movements was excellent. To me it was showing that they still have a human element to them; they are fully committed but can still suffer, meaning that they are courageous not just mindless automatons.

One thing that bugged me was the size of the psykers, they're almost as big as a marine, but it looks like they had cybernetics up to their eyeballs (literally).

Having watched it about 10 times now, i think my favourite bit is the very slight head movement of the sergeant leading to the coordinated assault. Its do subtle but really nicely done.

Apparently that's the idea. Supposedly, the created weighed in and revealed that they are heavily augmented psykers.
Speaking of the psyker designs, am I weird for thinking that they look like Dark Souls bosses? I mean, you can stick a big life bar on the screen and it would fit.

My only complaint is that bolter rounds should detonate like in this video, not the firecracker explosions we got unless psykers were somehow suppressing them...

Same. The precision and economy of movement speaks the loudest. Sarge just picking off targets with single- or double-taps, slight shifting as he engages a new target. Tac in hallway ambush: AP rounds punching through the walls? Pause a moment, then appear out of the shadows to shoot the ambusher in the face in less time than it takes to describe it. Hear someone crawling up with a satchel charge? Slight swivel of the head, perfectly-timed single-movement skewer the guy, as easy as breathing. Suddenly in a storm of multi-las fire? Instantly reposition to maximize armor coverage, squeeze off a round. Didn't pen? Pop smoke. No muss, no fuss, no time or angst needed. Heck, they barely moved above a trot while wiping out the crew. Big Bad Psykers? Okay, we may have to hustle a touch on this one.

Sarge's gonna need a new eye, and he's STILL cold as ice.

I'm just astounded (and relieved) that the other 3 are still alive and in relatively large pieces; I figured they'd been vaporized, or at least pulped inside their armor!

Except those are 40mm HE rounds and a bolter uses a 20mm APHE round.

Really incredible stuff. I like the way we are given zero details about the uprising's leaders- are they regular humans with delusions of grandeur? Chaos/xenos cult? Nothing is apparent- and the two telekines aren't giving anything away.

The decision to mask everyone to avoid animating faces is very clever.

Spacemarine rapid fire was never holding down the trigger and spray and pray, it was disciplined repeat shots.

The RTB01 model bolters all had ejection ports. Even if you are firing ceaseless rounds you need some way of clearing dud rounds.

The earlier caseless rounds still had the booster charge. To my knowledge, bolters have never been a Gyrojet. They have always been two stage.

Yes, bolt rounds are two-stage (early fluff describes the bolter discharge as a twin thunderclap) and shell casings and ejection ports were added pretty early onwards because nothing says rule of cool quite like having machine guns spitting out piles of spent brass.

What I really like about the marine animation is the economy of it all, no move is wasted or over the top, it's all direct, absolute and to the point.

Well I came into 40k with 3rd when marines started firing on auto in the art so I'm pretty murky on bolter fluff before hand. However, from what you describe, that original idea wouldn't even really work as a weapon. Rockets need somewhere for the ignition gases to go and if its into the gun then its probably going to ruin the gun pretty quick.

The two stage bolt rather than a rocket or a grenade actually makes sense (as a fantasy weapon) as the initial boost from the casing igniter would get the bolt out of the barrel while providing the gas needed to automatically chamber a new round. Allowing for high RoF when needed and allowing the rocket engine to go off without blasting apart the inner mechanisms of the gun.

I think the best way to think about a bolter is that it is a fairly advanced and robust select fire recoilless rifle. It doesn't shoot rockets, missiles, grenades or bullets but does work more or less exactly like a recoilless rifle.

Another benefit is that you get decent pen even at point blank; gyrojets are no good at really short range, since they haven't had a chance to accelerate to effective speeds.
