You can also use Gum Out carburetor cleaner to strip enamel paint off the hot wheels cars, it melts plastic so you need to remove the undersides and windows.

Spray it into a glass pickle jar so that you have a bunch of the liquid to soak the cars in and you're good. Just make sure to do it outside as the fumes from it are pretty heavy and keep it sealed up indoors. The paint will wrinkle up and start to peel so it comes right off with a toothbrush. It is pretty nasty stuff so use gloves to keep it off your skin. I've been able to strip cars after about a 10 minute soak, other take a few hours depending on the paint but it usually works fast.

Does anyone know if you can just use a soak in traditional paint thinner/mineral spirits to strip the paint (obviously only the metal parts after separating them)?

The Slide template usage is described on pp. 13-14, under Slide Results, with a little more about sliding into obstructions on p. 16.

My experience is that mineral spirits doesn't usually have any effect on the enamel paints used on toy cars.
You have to have something strong like MEK, Carb Cleaner, some powerful paint strippers and I have heard that oven cleaner spray sometimes works also

What's the background for Gaslands? The painted minis and such have a strong 'Mad Max' vibe, but the game suggests a more manufactured Car Wars "death sport" scenario.

It does look interesting. How does the relatively large minis work with the rules? Do you have a sense that the cars are actually moving?

(And, yes, Car Wars certainly draws from Mad Max and similar sources... But it grew to be set in a world that was on the edge, but wasn't quite falling apart, at least not quickly. So there were dealerships selling armored station wagons straight from the manufacturer so soccer moms could get their kids home in time to watch armored hovercraft/tank duels on SatTV.)

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Kind of an alternate history where we made it to Mars back in the '70s, then there was some civil war and stuff and Mars is like an exclusive, nice place while Earth is mostly a wasteland. There's a reality TV show, called Gaslands, where poor schmucks compete for their chance to get a one-way ticket to Mars. Kind of a Mad Max meets Running Man meets Deathrace 2000 meets Survivor deal.

Oh yeah, it definitely feels like stuff is moving around. And, in fact, it does. It's surprising how much you can cover with the standard Hot Wheels sized templates. Wipe outs are also very cinematic and easy to imagine all kinds of silly Michael Bay/Fast and Furious scenes.

Yeah, as I just came home with a new semi to make into a War Rig mini, the new linked Fury Road-esque chase scenarios look awesome.

Definitely check out some of the Youtube battlereports and Eilif's blog. If you are just doing a meet-and-fight, the first turn or two is mostly positioning before the action starts, but especially in the normal Death Race scenarios things can get crazy right off the start line, as cars jockey for position and careen around.

Other than the cars with guns aspect, the main draw for me is that I have always loved how the Flightpath system in X-Wing makes for tons of laughs as we fly all over and have close calls and near misses all over the place, and Gaslands has that same feel.

The other benefit is I can provide both sides forces from my own collection, because cars are so cheap. 5 cars for each side plus the rules and a wip War-Rig ran me less than a standard 40k unit box, and thats with 'splurging' on a couple of 5 dollar cars and the Rig cost me 7 dollars.

Building a blood in water scent

Played my first few games of Gaslands over the weekend, two teams of two cars in a Death Race. Great fun. I have a host of new modelling projects now.

I hate you all. Just ordered the book and picking it up tomorrow from miniaturemarket. All your talk has cost me lots of time thinking about this game. Just glad it’s a cheap buy in, and I think I’ll be able to use my MODCubes and Star Wars tokens to make dice. My poor son may be losing his hot wheels, but I think he will enjoy the game.

Yeah, you can get them direct, or there's a couple of places that now do them. They're actually listed as "Friends of Gaslands" on the gaslands.com SHOP page. Many of them also make templates, terrain, weapon bits, etc.

But yeah, our first few games we just used standard d6. It's not too difficult to remember, but having the actual skid dice is a lot more fun. I got mine from https://www.etsy.com/shop/thomaswynnstudio which may be a great option for those in the US.

Yeah the shipping to Canada is pretty pricey. In all cases it was as much as the order itself, or in the case of just a set of dice, double the cost of the dice set.

Anyone have any Canadian stores, or a cheaper shipping option?

I don't see any current Canada shops in the Friends of Gaslands list, but here's a link to said list for perusal. Might be able to find something better on shipping from one of them.

What’s your guys opinion on templates? Are paper ones printed from the website good enough(don’t mind printing multiples) or are the plastic or wood ones just so much better? I’m being cheap here.

I cut my own from plasticard. Proper ones do look better tho.

The proper ones from several Etsy sellers are quite well priced for their quality, really. Dice, too. I am using homemade versions of both dice and templates, but I'm definitely going to upgrade.

I already do that for my kid.
It's more for him, actually. What could be more fun than modding your Hot Wheels as a kid and then playing a game with them?

OK. Forget the part about being a kid.
Yeah this is all for me.
But the two of us should have a lot of fun building stuff to play toy cars with.

Played a four way demo game with all three of my kids (15 year old daughter, and twin 13 year olds/one boy one girl) and they all enjoyed it. Just all used a single middleweight car with machine guns.

I used my MODCubes with Star Wars inserts to be the dice, worked out great. Printed out the templates on heavier paper and it worked out great.

Hey guys, I'm hoping one of you can help me out and this isn't a board issue.

After an incident with my goat that looks like a dog i am now missing pages 16 to 18 and the templates from my rulebook.

I can replace templates but can anyone send me a copy of the pages?

Haven't played yet, but I am building my first team. I probably should design the vehicle stats before modeling, because a semi-truck hauler I made ended up costing 47 Cans with all the options I put on it. I think 50 cans is what most people play for teams, right? Yeeeah... might have gone overboard with that truck.

Some teams have one really tooled up vehicle against other teams multiple cheap cars.

How does the game play?

How is the race part of the game?

How is the combat part of the game?

How much terain and board apace do you need?

It's fun. Like X wing in mechanics, but aimed towards destruction. Rule of Carnage means in any dispute the highest carnage result should be followed.
Racing is important, and going fast also gets you more actions.
Combat is also important. There are scenarios which favour one over the other but the default death race favours speed.

4x4 would be standard but have done smaller. Terrain should be pretty sparce but enough to break things up so you can't drive in straight lines too easily.

So if the course is only straight lines, or one straight line, the drama of the game cuts down right? A big part of the mechanic is speed vs turning, is that right? And the. You have shooting and crashing on topp of that as a sort of subtheme?

As others mentioned, a bit similar to X-Wing as far as movement goes, but more alternating activation (that is, each car goes through all phases--move, attack--before another car does any; X-wing everyone moves then everyone fires in sequence)

All of these kinda depend a little more on which scenario you're playing. The Deathrace scenario, for example, you may focus a little more on actually racing through a series of gates (a figure 8 or similar works really well; pure straights is kinda boring). But Arena of Death, for example, there's no gates or racing involved, it's just pure destruction derby. There's a few other scenarios that have different things, and of course you can come up with your own ideas, too.

Combat is pretty straight forward, though, and so are handling collisions. You do have to recognize that it isn't a simulator so the author opted to go with "cinematic" results in some cases (which he talks about in his blog at www.gaslands.com), but so far everyone I've given a demo game to was having fun and fairly intuitive by half way through.

Again, depends on the scenario. Zombie Bash is all about who can run over the most zombies, for example (post-apocalyptic, irradiated zombies out in the desert).
