I have been collecting 40k for decades now and have decided to give AOS a try.

I am a complete newbie to it all so I am undecided on what kind of army I want to start with (I was thinking Skeletons and Vampires).

Anyway, because of my uncertainty, I wanted to buy a start collecting box but was not sure which HQ on the on the behemoth to go for.

I am pretty sure there was a box set which said in the description that I could set up a behemoth and attach any of the 3 main characters I wanted (Mannfred or Archon for example).

I cannot seem to find it now. Do any of you know of this box set and where I can find it? I was thinking of attaching magnets to each of the characters so I can change them depending on my strategy.

Are you wanting to start small or start with a decent sized force?

If you want to start with a decent sized force that comes with its own rules and the only downside to it is using Neferata rather than Mannfred or Arkhan the Black?

The Battleforce "Blade of the Blood Queen" is your ticket. Bear in mind that it might be going away fast with the surge of new Death players thanks to the new edition's box as it was a Christmas box that still has leftover stock.
It nets you:
-20 Skeleton Warriors(this is two boxes worth of Skeletons as silly as that might sound. They come in boxes of 10 at the moment)
-10 Grave Guard
-2 Morghast
-Mortarch that can be built as any of them(I can't speak to magnetizing them--I think there's some potential issues with the reins and heads that you might encounter?)
-A Wight King with Tomb Blade

The box you were asking about is "Start Collecting: Skeleton Hordes"

-10 Skeleton Warriors
-5 Black Knights(or they can be built as Hexwraiths--not in the Warscroll Battalion I think)
-Mortarch

To quickly and fairly cheaply bulk out a force with some elite-ish, heavy hitting-ish units look no further than the Deathrattle Barrow Lords skirmish set.

Gets you:
-A Wight King
-5 Black Knights
-10 Grave Guard

Hope all this helps. Everything I listed off is usable for "Legions of Nagash"--as is the upcoming Nighthaunt stuff!

Thank you very much. I appreciate the effort.

So, these boxes above (minus the skeleton only one) come with the Mortarch with exchangeable characters?

I am leaning towards the blood queen (mostly because the -1 to hit is a big help getting the hordes closer) but I cannot seem to find any rules which suggest that she can raise skeletons whereas Mannfred and Archon can.

I think I am going to start with 4 boxes of skeletons and get the boring stuff out the way while my enthusiasm is still here for the army.

Correct. Boxes with multiple builds will have all of the build options unless they explicitly spell it out as being just one of the options.

My understanding is that Legions of Nagash's summoning is the same for every General's option now.

I'd highly suggest getting the Legions of Nagash book as well.

I bought the codex and then found out the new one has come out recently. So I'll have to wait a while I'm afraid.
My mistake!
Thanks for the advice.

If you bought it at a GW store, you can probably do an exchange towards the "Legions of Nagash" battletome.
