I started with the release of 3rd.
I walked into DakkaDakka on its 11th day of business.
Played 3rd almost daily for years. Played a lot of 4th. I think I was nearly undefeated in 4th using my Ultramarines.
Played one game of 5th against Necrons the week the edition came out. The rules for LoS killed my interest.
Played a game or 2 of 6th.
Played a few games of 7th with Eldar.
Have now played maybe 10 games of 8th.
Moving on to Age of Sigmar now that Knights have killed the game for me for the second time.

It's a shame the bars show percentage of total votes, not percentage of voters who clicked that category. For example, we can see that more people have played 8th, but not what percentage of people have played 8th...

Huh, I'm a little surprised by the breakdown. 8th being the most popular is somewhat odd, I guess everyone I play with has been playing since at least 6th, many even longer than that.

Still, no complaints that new people are getting into the game.

The percentages look exactly like I would expect them to. If you're under 30 odds are fairly good you didn't play 2nd Edition. I'm 36, started 2nd Ed in middle school fairly near the beginning of the edition. And for the most part once people started playing they kept playing so the younger players add onto the older ones to make the total increase as the editions rolled on. If you played 2nd but stopped you're likely not posting on DakkaDakka right now.

If I remember correctly Eldar and Space Wolves were the only two codexes out when I started 2nd Ed, maybe IG? It's been to long. I started with Eldar and switched over to Dark Angels after the Angels of Death codex was released.

Everything up to 5th. I was already dissatisfied with 5th before 6th dropped hot garbage and necessitated a complete buy in on all books to stay current. THAT was the moment I gave up on staying current. I sold almost all my armies, but was smart enough to keep a couple and started playing 3rd again with my brother a couple friends.

I'm in the same boat. I started playing Fantasy in 6th and playing from 6th to 8th, then I stoped like 1 year before the End Times. I tried to play 40k before but I didn't liked it that much, but with 8th is my main game now. I'm starting again with AoS with 2.0 after a hiatus since 8th launched.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

2nd through to 6th. I honestly don't recall if I actually played any 7th Ed games, or just read the rules and moved on due to it being too similar to 6th, but worse... And 8th Ed didn't pull me back. If and when I have time for 40k again, it will likely be a hybrid of 5th and 6th, with modified 4th Ed casualty removal.

I came in towards the end of 3rd
Played a lot during 4th and 5th
Got a handful of games in during 6th, mostly towards the end due to a sudden increase of new players and I kind of felt obligated to show them the ropes being the "veteran" player in the area.
I played 10 games of 7th and utterly loathed it.
Been loving 8th so much. Feels like a breathe of fresh air for me and sort of reminds me of my experienced during 4th and 5th editions. It has almost certainly been a much more rewarding experience with out of the box thinking and list building.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

In 1999 I picked up the 3rd edition boxed set. By the beginning of 4th I had an entire chapter's worth of Space marines and had gotten 2 of my friends into the game by giving them starter armies.

Rage quit after a year or so of 4th. Keeping only a battle-company of marines.

After about a year of 5th started up again.

Played through the garbage fires of 6th and 7th(both of which had some aspects I liked).

Enjoying 8th.

Yes, exactly. Been about a month since I've seen someone not using knights. No opponents means new game.

That's unfortunate, but it's also not an issue with the game, as it is with your environment, community or lack of communication with the people you're playing against.

There are, locally, perhaps 40-50 gamers that I know personally or have met which play 40K. Of those, I actively game with seven of them. The main hub is the local 40K Facebook group, but after attending events, random pick-up games, etc. I've been able to select the guys who have similar interests, play fair, and are compatible with what I'm looking for in the game.

If you're a hardcore or tournament gamer, then that decision is on you, unfortunately.
