Originally i was going to stick with the tempestus scions but now my love has been drawn to the standard troops something about them intrigue me to make an army around infantry gun lines maybe its because there viewed as the underdog i don't know but there fascinating from there background story's and what not.

So now starts the next problem i have there codex of choice is so overwhelming as a new player to the game where do i go on from having a company commander and infantry squads how will i build there equipment should i take tanks that sort of stuff.

I don't think anyone views IG swarm as the underdog. Specially when supported with a baneblade and 2-3 russes.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Before you do ANYTHING else I think you need to decide on whether you are going vehicle, gun-line, melee, or mixed. All can work well with guard

Then choose your regiment

I PERSONALLY feel that the Vost are the best for gun-line (+6", +1 to hit stratagem, & Shoot into melee Order).

I would then build a Battalion, I recomend a Primaris Psycher, Company Commander and taking Hvy Weapons in Infantry squads

Guardsmen are pretty much top dog this edition. One of the most seen units in competitive armies overall. 4pts for a wound is amazing as it is, but Guardsmen get more for that 4pts, when factoring in support units, than anyone else.

Equipment wise, it's generally best to be frugal with them. Heavy Weapons are rarely worth it with the 4+ BS and moving reducing that further. A Plasma Gun can be an ok investment but not mandatory by any means. Flamers to deter charges is also an option.

As for the rest of the army, after you have your 3 units of Guardsmen and 2 HQ, you could consider a second Battalion, or Russes. Russes are also pretty fantastic right now, very cheap for a T8 model with a gun as good as it has. Unless you are committed to not running Cadia you also need Pask in your life. Possibly the best vehicle in the game in terms of bang for buck!

A Basilisk, bare bones.

Two Leman Russ Battle Tanks. I prefer Hull Heavy Bolter & Heavy Bolter Sponsons, but it's 90% personal choice plus what you intend to use the unit for.

Six Infantry Squads. These guys sit & shoot. I like Lascannon & Grenade Launcher. Some people say you should use Plasma guns as your Special Weapon, but that doesn't come in the box.

Three Veteran Squads. These are your maneuver elements.
You TOTALLY want to give them three Plasma Guns. You'll have to buy the Guns separate direct from GW.

Three Heavy Weapons Teams. Conventional wisdom is to give them Mortars and park them out of LOS.

Now you're only three Fast Attack choices short of a full Brigade. I say three Sentinels to use as mobile heavy weapons platforms in support of the Veterans.

Toss in some Company Commanders & Platoon Commanders, and you'll STILL have points left over.

As the previous poster referenced, imperial guard infantry lists are very powerful in the current competitive tournament meta-game. Infantry squads are typically kept very cheap, without special weapons and only using the cheapest heavy weapons (like mortars) because their role in the battle is to secure objectives, kill enemy light infantry with their lasguns, and die in a slow and points-efficient manner

From there, you can go...almost anywhere! That's the great thing about the IG book, there are few bad options, as long as you follow these rules:

1) keep it cheap. a fancy leman russ tank fully loaded up with a Demolisher cannon, a lascannon, a pair of plasma cannons, and a combi-melta dies exactly as fast as a barebones battlecannon/heavy bolter leman russ...but can cost nearly twice as much! The guard thrive when they can present their opponents with a huge wall of identical firepower, not offering any single target that's easier to kill than any other.

2) keep it protected. The major achilles heel of guard ground vehicles is that once you're in combat, you're not shooting any more. A Basilisk, Manticore or Leman Russ tank behind a wall of guarding infantry is a relentless hammer, delivering nasty firepower that can easily dish out more punishment than it receives over several turns of combat. A leman russ in close combat even with a fast enemy unit that can't kill it is a fairly pricy paperweight. Bare minimum, you want ten infantry on the ground for every tank they're standing in front of. Most tournament lists have that ratio more like 10 infantry to 1 vehicle.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Well i was going to make it fluffy so far starting of my forces i want to do is the following.

Commander Unit

Company Commander
Command Squad
Heavy Weapons Squad
Heavy Weapons Squad

This unit will be sitting at the back using long ranged weapons to deal with the heavy hitters that might come in range of the firing lines.

As for the officer unit he will consist of the following to deal with the front line.

Platoon Commander
Command Squad
Infantry Unit
Infantry Unit

I was thinking of using conscripts instead of the two infantry unit but there does not seem to be any models...

Conscripts do not have official models - they use the basic infantry models, and are usually painted with a different marking to denote their conscript-y-ness.

Personally I use much scruffier Forgeworld renegade guard as my conscripts, since my guardsmen are Vostroyan Firstborn and I figure the conscripts are just locals they rounded up and shoved onto the front lines.

You want action heroes? Choose Catachans and you won´t rue your decision. They even love weapons which produce a big boom in 8th. There is also Marbo & Straken to consider as special characters.
