Hi guys. So I've been tweeking and playing this list for a while now. I have a tournament on July 22nd. Being newish to the hobby I'm not planning on taking first, but I do want to be competitive. I recently switched from a battalion to a spearhead detachment for less HQ & troop tax. My current dilemma is whether or not to drop a Hellblaster squad for a Vanguard Veteran squad (2x Thunderhammer/Storm Shield, 3x Lightening Claws). Or dropping both squads of Hellblasters for 2 vanguard vet squads. Any thoughts or input is much appreciated.

I have no experience about Tournaments, but, playing Ultramarines, I think you will prefeer the option to fall back and shoot instead of having Vets.

Maybe other users with experience can help you or give you a tip or two about your list.

If you could find the points i'd suggest either changing your misile launcher devs to heavy bolters to give more hellfire round goodness. Or change heavy bolter to Missile Launcher to get better anti-air and tank.

I'd avoid the Vanguard. It's clear you're basing this around Guilliman's abilities so Vanguard wouldn't benefit this list anywhere near as much as Hellblasters. I'd also avoid mixing your heavy weapons like that; perhaps it's me stuck in my 7th Ed ways, but I've never been a fan of mixing them like that.

I would also consider getting some more Troops if you can; while you're good on sheer firepower you may struggle to claim objectives. Perhaps consider dropping one of the Razorbacks to get another squad of Primaris, or if you don't want to, go for an Ancient with the banner relic for your Hellblasters.

Interesting list,
I say cut a razorback and intercessors for either 2 tac squads and a HQ (another libby or Lt.), or three Scout squads and an HQ. Your devs seem fine, only better way is to to cut the HB for another ML.
I say pass on the vanguard vets and most importantly.
GOOD LUCK

So first question is what type of missions will you be playing? Will they be book missions or will it be progressive ITC style missions?

I am no expert, nor have I been to any large tournaments, the following options only come from me playing at my small local RTTs.

If they are ITC style missions I definitely think that you will need more troops as holding those objectives become very important.

In my play testing I have found that a squad of intercessors is almost as good as the Razorback when shooting at chaff, yes it wounds on 3s rather than 2s, but saving those 25 points buys you a ton of toys. Also right now my meta carries a ton of anti armor weapons, so I don't run any tanks. When an enemy uses at 25pt weapon to kill a single space marine they get pretty salty. Since you are running the dread you also need to saturate the board with armor so cutting them might not be an option for you.

The dev load out is good each one is set up to do either hellfire shells or flakk missiles and then armor churb for 2D3 moral wounds. So even if they wipe one the other is fully capable.

Hellblasters > Vanguard vets, I do think your army lacks a melee punch besides G-Man. I have been having great success with a Captain on a bike with a thunder hammer and santic halo. It will provide you with another deny the witch, something you can never have enough of.

Last item I can recommend is a primaris ancient with the relic banner, can be HUGE. Put him with the dev squads or the hellblasters, lets say the enemy shoots your devs, they can come back and take a shot on a 3+ (with the relic) and shoot at some armor that hasn't shot yet. Giving you a chance to kill that armor or degrade it. I've stolen first blood by doing this.

Good luck out there man, and remember YMMV

One day I'll put something funny here.

If you're castling around Guilliman; castle around guilliman with a distinct secondary for counterstrikes? hellblasters, Guilliman and an ancient are a killer combo; devs in the back of the castle if you want? or Razors in the bubble? either way I'd consider the banner?

vanguard don't really fit the strategy? but alos if you have 2 squads I could see them dropping in to wipe backfield units or isolated flankers?

good luck!
