So I know there are tournaments with rules concerning not basing models that come with bases. But what about basing models that do not come with bases?

Furthermore, would it be kosher to use a rectabgular base that approximates the dimensions of the model?

I ask because I was planning on getting my hands on some Termite Drills, but I probably will want to base them for easier storage and handling.

There are zero rules in the rulebook regarding basing. Not even a "Use the base it comes with." All it has are rules on how to deal with based and non-based models.

You're free to do whatever you want with your models, as far as the rules are concerned you can use an unbased gretchin to represent a warhound titan. To what extent your opponents will be willing to deviate from the "norm" is between you and them.

For me, the joy is in putting some good-looking models on the board and playing out a fantasy battle - not arguing over the poorly-made rules of some 3rd party who neither has any power over my play nor will be visiting me (and my opponent) to ensure we are "playing by the rules"
