I just saw this - based on a true story. Here is a trailer:

So my opinion, no spoilers:

1.) It was really good, one of Spike Lee's better movies. Not as good as Inside Man but that's a different thread.

2.) It is not a comedy. There were a few comedic moments but not a comedy.

3.) The ending is a kind of a bummer - the girl sitting next to me was crying at the end, I think.

I want to see this, but I'm worried the audience in Huntington Beach might not be ideal to see it with.

I haven't wanted to see a Spike Lee movie in a long time. I think Inside Man was the last one I was excited for. This trailer sold me on the film *so hard*. Even if it isn't a comedy, it still looks like a good time.

I assume it’s gotta be better than that “Brooklyn Hustle” trash he’s pushing on Hulu. But the commercials for that show/movie/excrement have put Spike Lee on my “never watch a single piece of gak he puts his name on” list. He, Ang Lee, and Melissa McCarthy make up that list. It’s a short, but very important list.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

... after several minutes of googling, the best I can figure is that you won't ever watch a Spike Lee movie because you didn't like a short he did as a student in 1979?

Hoping to see this film this week.

Regarding point 3, I like sad/"unhappy" endings, and this movie seems like it would be a bummer throughout given the subject matter. Without spoiling, is the ending dramatically more depressing than the rest of the movie?
Given that we are still dealing with this gak in 2018, and David Duke's newfound relevancy in the last few years, I am guessing the sad ending is appropriate.

I think timetowaste85 is referring to this?

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/07/spike-lee-uber-short-films-da-republic-of-brooklyn-1201984132/

There are many ways to fight the power, and one of them is directing short films for Uber. Spike Lee has teamed up with the ride-sharing company for “Uber Presents Da Republic of Brooklyn,” a series of five shorts highlighting the men and women behind the wheel in the filmmaker’s favorite borough of New York — and lest you fear that this is another example of Uber not doing right by its employees, the company has specified that all drivers were compensated for their participation in the project.

Read More:‘Tales from the Hood 2’ Trailer: Mr. Simms Returns 23 Years Later for an Eerie, Campy Sequel from Producer Spike Lee — Watch
“I was attracted to this project because I know a lot of people who drive on the Uber platform and it gives them the flexibility they need to pursue their dreams,” Lee says in a statement. “That’s how we do it in Brooklyn – that’s the Brooklyn hustle.” 2018 has proven to be Lee’s best year in quite some time, as his “BlacKkKlansman” premiered at Cannes and won great acclaim — as well as the festival’s coveted Grand Prix.

The five films — “Malka,” “Sunny,” “Domingo,” “Keith,” and “Rodney” are all available to watch on Uber Presents. “BlacKkKlansman,” meanwhile, arrives in theaters on August 10.

That makes so much more sense than that student film. Thanks.

So far as "dramatically sadder", no - it's more depressing. You already have the idea of why.

Thank you, DarkTraveler; that is indeed what I'm talking about. It's been an obnoxious set of commercials on Hulu that are frankly idiotic looking; some of them calling their interests/hobbies "Hustle" is dumb. "Hustle" is either moving fast, or some form of fraudulent activity. So when the one guy says "art is my passion, art is hustle"...well, either he's a moron, or he's trying to swindle people. It really feels like an example of "is there actually a point in this?" These commercials, as awful as they are, are my first actual introduction to Spike Lee; they say first impressions are everything, and my first impression from him is obnoxious.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I love the story but I wonder just how good of a movie it'll make. Wouldn't it just be a bunch of shots of him in phone conversations plus an epic arrest scene?

'Hustle' is (perhaps new, but I don't think so) slang for working hard to achieve your goal. Tons of artists and athletes talk about the 'hustle' they put in to make it.

Maybe I'm wrong, but your short blacklist makes me think there is rather a more political reason you object, rather than being annoyed by the use of slang.

Excuse me? Political reason? Please elaborate, because my short list is due to the following:

M. McCarthy-annoying as feth, loud, obnoxious, stupid
S. Lee-"movie" (if you can call it that) that seems ridiculously stupid, pointless and is over-the-top "in your face" about....NOTHING on online video sites
Ang Lee-Incredibly Horrible Hulk that was an abomination of a comic movie. I'd put the director from Failt4astic in there too, but it was split over three people who all got trainwrecked by FOX, so that isn't fair to blame them.

If finding people to ruin characters/universes I like/love (Lee), or finding people ridiculously obnoxious (other Lee and McCarthy) is political...I don't get it. Sounds like you're looking for a fight more than having a point, honestly.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Well, I understand hating certain celebrities (Melissa McCarthy is a very, very fair example), but with directors I think it's a little different because you don't really see them in front of the camera. You should consider watching Inside Man and Life of Pi, which are both really good movies you are missing out on.

I read Life of Pi and couldn't stand it, so I'll give the film a miss, no matter how good it is. On the other hand, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is good, and Brokeback Mountain and Sense and Sensibility were both very well-received.

I thought CT.HD was OK but i didn't love it. However I don't love any kung-fu type movies, so I don't think I'm the target audience.

Eh, I won't watch anything Tyler Perry puts out so it's difficult to be too hard on him. He doesn't like the dude, he doesn't like him.

I'm not a huge Spike Lee booster or anything. My favorite directors are John Carpenter, James Cameron, Danny Boyle, Quentin Tarantino, Gillermo del Toro, Chris Nolan, dudes like that. I just thought it was a solid flick.

I don't like kung-fu movies much either, but I love CT,HD. I also like Ang Lee's Hulk, as it happens - preferred it to The Incredible Hulk.

Ang Lee's Hulk I thought went far beyond a mere comic book movie and aspired to be something greater.

Alas, they completely messed up Hulk's backstory in the process. Whole point of the character is that Banner is at least part responsible for him being the Hulk: Lee's version made him a mere victim.
Also, ending was super bad. Hulk needs to smash things up.

Tarantino is one of those people who felt exciting and refreshing at first, then he kept doing same thing all over and over again and became real tiresome.

He isn't directing in Suriyaki Western Django though, just acting.
I take it you hate him both as an actor AND as a director. Even in From Dusk till Dawn?
