Re my landlord, we were at the Landlord and Tenant Board on Thursday. He tried to evict me, the Board said no, I asked for a two-month rent abatement due to lack of maintenance and other routine violations of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, and the Board said yes. I live in a small, gakky apartment so it's not as if I'm now rolling in cash, but the money saved on rent will pay for most of the rest of my 2K R&H list.

Life has been sort of kicking my butt recently, hence the lack of progress. I also have to sit five exams (to prove that my English law degree is up to snuff to practice Canadian law, which is almost entirely based on English law) in that there Toronto at the end of January, so not sure how much progress there will be any time soon.

As a UK-based lawyer, just out of interest, what are the main differences in getting qualified over there? I know some about America, lots about the UK and a smattering of the commonwealth countries, but Canada is a mystery

You have to submit to an assessment by the National Committee on Accreditation, who look at your degree results and prior experience as a licensee and then they tell you that either you have to go to a Canadian law school or you have to sit between four and ten exams to prove that your knowledge is up to snuff.

IIRC, Ryerson University in that there Toronto that they have now offers an accelerated course that is an alternative to the exam process, but also isn't really an option if you don't live in Toronto.

Once all that's done, you have to take and pass the Bar exams, one for solicitor and one for barrister. In Canada, every licensee is both a solicitor and a barrister, FWIW. Then you 'article' for ten months, which is basically pupillage/trainee solicitor, though you can apply for an abridgment of up to nine months if you have prior experience in law in any capacity.

In my opinion, the NCA is nakedly protectionist. At the time I entered the process I worked with a Canadian who went to Australia to do his degree. Neither of us were licensed anywhere else and I got better results on my degree than he did on his. The NCA made him do four exams, whereas I, a Brit, have to do ten.

I feel bad posting here without updates, but there simply are none and I'd feel worse by ignoring all of your lovely words. My time is hoovered up with studying, travelling to Toronto and back and living with a dog and will be for at least another week. My landlord has also killed most of the heating to my apartment and given that it's been hovering between -12c and -25c here the last few days, I couldn't paint if I wanted to.

I felt so bad about spamming up the thread without updates that I couldn't focus on my revision. I also kinda figure that if it isn't in there by now it won't go in tonight and my time was better used doing something relaxing ahead of tomorrow's exam.

Escher heads, judiciously chopped and filed and bunged into Cadian helmets. What do you reckon? I can't tell whether they're passable or whether they look a bit dodgy. One second they look fine, the next... Grenade soldat is basically a female version of Starshiy Serzhant Yeryomenko, with the left-handed soldat conversion ripped off from Dakka's own LDP. LDP's is much better, natch.

Those of you who follow this know that including female soldats is very important to me, do they read as women? Those who follow this will also know that I'm a little obsessed with Soviet history and a Soviet band called Kino, so the sniper is in tribute to Major Lyudmila Mikhailovna 'Lady Death' Pavlichenko, a Red Army soldat who is one of the top snipers of all time and an all-around bad-ass. She was removed from front-line duty after being shelled (and because she was becoming too much of a high-priority target for 'ze Germans') and was sent to the U.S.A. as part of a diplomatic effort to promote American involvement in the fight to defeat the Axis powers and where, to a packed room and the press, she said

"I am 25 years old and I have killed 309 fascist invaders by now. Don't you think, gentlemen, that you have been hiding behind my back for too long?"

Bad. Ass.

Also, in Russian slang a sniper is a 'kukushka' (кукушка); originally used to specifically mean a Finnish sniper. Kukushka, which translated literally means 'cuckoo', is also a song by Kino; one of my favourites by them. A pop-metal version of it also features in the movie "The Battle of Sevastopol", which is about... Lyudmila Mikhailovna Pavlichenko before she became a Major.

There's also a Russian/Finnish movie called Kukushka, which I like a lot too. It's a comedy-drama about a Sami lady, a Finnish soldier and a Soviet soldier thrown together in the last days of WWII. You should watch both it and The Battle of Sevastopol.

The sniper is great, the Grenadier gives me flashback to my Füsilier RS (recruitmentschool for riflemen) and makes me shudder and pray that i don't get hit from the slow with the gun holding it insecure.

That's not at all the impression I was trying to convey and will change her up, if so.

Honestly, the way she holds her lasgun is the part of the mini I like least and ironically it took the most work.

No worries It looks cool but, if she were in my unit under my NCO she would've gotten atleast a "stern "talking. something along the line off: " Seg male sind Sie eigetlich zruggblibbe?!? Herrgott nonemale!"

brings me back to the one time i as a Füsilier was allowed to throw nades...... (hint with a unit that has 1/10 imbeciles that is a nerve wracking experience)

Normally you would hold the gun on the upper part, where you also stabilize it, or put it on the back, prefereably if you have cover and have someone supporting you, you would put the gun with safety on somewhere where you can grab it fast but not on your body.

Normally as in under optimal conditions, when you are in a battle you will not really follow always protocol, alltough it is advisable.

So nah, leave her, i may be just traumatized from my stickler NCO.

Hmm, if you really want to "save" her, yes that is possible, just turn the gun so that the Butt (backside) is under her holding arm and point's forwards.

Secondly, Competency of the IG / miniature has nothing to do with mysonigy, Since A: we have crap knowledge of how well she was trained
And B: Considering that the sniper has bionics, ergo expensive equipment, ergo in the IG that means that she is either from noble birth, has money or is (more likely in your case) competent that would balance itself out.

You will always find bad and good people at jobs, the same is expanded also into military forces.

I can attest the chance in my unit to be shot by the "competent" combatants of male gender was higher then the few female volunteers we had. Nade throwing on the other hand was another story, and "throwing like a girl" is the last thing you want to have happen to anyone, well if nades are involved

I think you have done a good job with the heads in the Cadian helmets. Its unfortunate (to me) that it accentuates the size of the Cadian bodies. The male Cadian head in your spoiler fills out the helmet, which doesn't look quite so out of place with the stocky Cadian body. You might need larger female heads - I wonder if the female Stormcast Eternal heads upgrade set from Forgeworld might be a better size...

The plan currently is for there to be 122 visible faces in the K4WDF by the time it hits 2k points, and with these new additions 29 of them (24%) will be (or I hope will be) noticeably female. I'm not super happy about that and think it's rather low, personally, but making more soldats female pushes this project beyond my budget.

I'm going to be using Victoria Minis Arcadian "bald female heads" inside the empty Cadian helmets for all but 5 of them; three will have Daemonette heads and two now have Escher heads. All but eight of them will have female Arcadian legs, which are noticeably slimmer than Cadian legs are. One will be modeled, if not run, as a Tank Commander and doesn't require legs, the other seven get regular Cadian legs.

As things stand, I cannot afford to make a purchase from Victoria Minis though, so these two are a product of "what do I currently have to hand" combined with my guilt in not updating this in any meaningful way for a long time.

Tbf if you put lyudmilla in modern / guardsmen equipment you probably couldn't tell her apart from male counterparts in the same equipment from afar.

The BB' s are allright though. They are anyways just a bunch of joan d'arcs "in space" and should be understood for that so they should be allowed to look the over the top part like they do.

To be clearer, when mixing models for conversions, you want to mix models with similar proportions, regardless of whether that is male/male, female/female or male/female. You are absolutely correct that at this scale the differences between gender do not need to be accentuated.

The reason I'm still planning on using Victoria Minis heads rather than the (much cheaper on bitz sites) Escher heads is precisely because I agree the proportions are off.

For two minis out of 122, I'm ok with it though. One, actually. The Kukushka will never see a 40K tabletop, she's purely a modelling project, who maybe might possibly one day see action in Kill Team.

It makes no sense at all to me to have one person in a squad dressed in a camo cloak and I can't use her as a Vindicare, so...

While taking a break from revision to watch my beloved Leafs continue their league-leading cold streak I took the opportunity to make some changes to grenade soldat. The story of the Kronstaat System has also advanced and while the new 'episode' is still not quite ready for public consumption, I'm going to tease you with this image

Ho-hum, stock posing. C'est la vie. I'm going to have to make a sizable bitz order along with my Victoria Minis order at the beginning of February, I think. The specific head I have used for her has an eye-patch and what appears to be a cigar, so I'm making her the Sergeant of my second Militia squad and she will henceforth be known as Serzhant Nikulina, after Anna Vladimirovna Nikulina. She was one of the soldats to place the Soviet flag on the Reich Chancellery, per The World at War.

Though I had considered and pooh-poohed the idea previously, there is in fact nothing at all stopping me from running my Renegades and Heretics as Astra Militarum on occasion, therefore the 'kukushka' mini is now a counts-as Vindicare Assassin. She will be referred to in future as Starshiy (Senior) Serzhant Pavlichenko, Ledi Smert (Lady Death). They'll have 16CP natively so I don't really care about the -1CP tax for an Aux. Support Detachment.

EDIT - Toronto won, 6-3.

I don't know much about posing but I like the... philosophy? if that's the right word, behind your approach.

Also i'm pretty sure i've seen the movie you mention, kukushka. Is that the one called "The Cuckoo"? I live in an area with a lot of Finns, so it was actually shown in a few special theaters here back in the day.

That you need to field 2 other assasins in a vanguard thanks to battlebrothers ruling

Or lose one CP by using an Auxiliary Support Detachment, which honestly I don't see as being that much of a big deal.

As mentioned, my dudespeople will have 16CP natively (Brigade, Spearhead, Battle-Forged) and if I make them Astra Militarum they have access to a Warlord Trait that refunds 33% of the CP you spend.

Then when you spend those refunded CP, you get 33% of them back, too.

And so on, and so on.
