Sooo i'm fairly new to the game and was wondering who TF came up with detachments. Basically what i need to know is whether detachments can split up during the game, and if not why is it that i'm forever seeing armies with individual units walking off on their own?? Necrons for example are always seeing random groups of wraiths or an individual scythe fly off without HQ, so considering the recommended limit is three detachments for a decent sized army.... how the hell are there so many Units wondering off in every game i see.

Detachments are only relevant when you organise your army before the battle. In the game itself, units act independently - it doesn't matter which detachment they belong to in your army list.

Detachments and the old Force Organization charts are the same thing. They've been in the game 20+ years

You seem to be confusing "detachment" for "unit". Units can go off and do whatever they want, but have to remain in coherency.
