chris56s jetbike got to be my favourite this month. looks like a possible demon entry...??
also, Evil D: lovely ghost flames, and nice heat stress weathering.
Midget gems: love the simple base with the tyres,like a nod to the old tech.

For me anyway.

I find it increadibly hard to paint vehicles in the first place, to get the lighting and shadows to look like that, on what is otherwise a completely flat surface....awesome/.

Had a hard time narrowing it down to 5 votes. Some pretty good quality entries all around really. I don't have time to comment on everyone, sadly, but here's who I voted for:
Rybrook: I love that old-school Land Speeder! You executed the classic paint scheme really well on it too. I wish I could find one of those for my Ravenwing.
Midget Gems: Another awesome Orky conversion. You never seem to run out of ideas!
Brother Castor: I love how your Whirlwind turned out. Very crisp and clean paintjob!
feltmonkey: I love Hellions; I very nearly started a Drukhari army when I saw the Gangs of Commoragh box, mainly because of the Hellions. Yours look amazing!
Chris56: You are the master of making cool little vignettes! This might be your best one yet, too!

I'm pretty pleased with how my own entry turned out as well, no matter how many actual votes it gets. I had loads of fun working on it, so I hope you all had fun with your entries too. Shout out as always to Paradigm for taking time out of his busy life to organize these challenges. It's always inspirational to see what my fellow hobbyists are capable of. See you all in the spooky October challenge!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

This was difficult. Tons of good entries!

Special congratulations to lipsdapips for painting that Scion. Incredibly crisp, and really caught my attention. Evil D-185, you also painted a very wonderful Viper. Loved it

My vote went to Chris56. That diorama was very nice, and the lighting just felt right. I think it might be the colour choice, but there was an interesting lack of background scenery that helped to keep my eyes focusing on the model itself, and the Imperial Guard poster was a nice touch. The painted eyes were also fantastic. I'm a sucker for elegant form, so the Escher really got to me!

All in all, congratulations to everyone who submitted!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. I was worried I'd overdone the shade in some areas, but in that photo at least (side lit by natural light on the windowsill) it did end up looking quite good!

Another fun month, another set of comments for everyone!

Nevelon - Decent tabletop standard, and the stripe is very neatly done on each jetbike.

Rybrook - Nice and colourful work, with great use of transfers. The paint looks a bit too thickly applied on some areas.

JamesY - Great work. Neat, nicely highlighted, the scratches are well done. Unfortunately you've fallen foul of that stupid mould line down the knee and shin on these models. I can't really hold it against you, as I'm terrible at removing the things, and it's a really annoyingly-placed one. Really great work though, as I said.

Midget Gems - Superb conversion, to the point that I was questioning whether it was just an official model I was unaware of. The radiator grill on the front and the head tied to the back top the whole thing off. Great job.

Coh Magnussen - Very funny idea, and I love the huge red balloon. The only problem for me is the grot's body position. Instead of looking like he's being lifted by the balloon, he sort of sticks out ridgedly from the side a bit. This sort of thing can be very hard though. I understand that you'd have had to cut up and reassemble his body to get it to the right position.

queen_annes_revenge - A cool little diorama. The weathering on the helicopter is very nice. I can't make much out from the photos, unfortunately. They're a bit distant, small, and grainy. I can't work out how it fits the theme. They're "picking up" a helicoptor?

F Smallhands - That mount is really nicely done. Superb colours! The rider is a bit plain and brown/grey in comparison, maybe he could do with a couple of spot colours to bring him to life, or a more vibrant skintone? I suspect you spent so much time making the gryph look that cool that you ran out of time to do much with the rider.

Brother Castor - A lovely clean tank. The shading and highlights look good, as do the transfers. Did you use the dakkadakka filter on the photos?

KernelTerror - Very gross and gribbly. I can't really tell what I'm looking at, I don't know if that's the effect you're going for. I can't tell if things are legs or some kind of stumpy, soupy appendage. As I say though, very body horror.

Power Elephant - Very atmospheric diorama. I love Fallout 2. Obviously you've expanded most of your energy on the OSL and that does add a lot. I feel you might have more success in the votes if you concentrate on some of the basics a bit more, go for a bit more neatness, good highlights and contrast, rather than putting everything into the more advanced techniques. Not that there's anything wrong with using these techniques, of course, and your OSL on this does add a lot to the diorama. I've just seen terrific painting from you on a mech (it might have been an Infinity model) and it would be cool to see that level of painting on a diorama like this.

lipsdapips - A good, solid paintjob. The lenses and camo are very good, and you have that edge highlighting style down well. I personally preferred a couple of your other recent entries to this one, but it is nicely done.

Maharg - Great highlighting on a limited colour palette. You've picked out all the details very nicely.

ZergSmasher - Awesome plague drone. It looks grubby and sinister. Good painting on the details, such as the various sores. The base is a bit plain, but overall I like it.

Evil D-185 - Very nice, interesting alternative colour scheme. My favorite parts are the bits of weathering rather than the airbrushed pattern. The heat burn on the jets is excellent.

Captain Magpie - A pretty spectacular Lord of Change. There's some nice iridescence to the blues. Great job picking out all the many details on this model, as well.

Flinty - I quite like these drones, but the most of the photos are really out of focus, which isn't helping you. The painting looks like a good tabletop standard, and the bases are cool.

CREEEEED - Nice tabletop squad of grey knights. Neatly done, and the red areas add interest. Some areas could do with some highlights rather than just the shading with a wash. Good overall, though.

Paradigm - Really cool. Very characterful and atmospheric work, as always from you, Para. Those black wings are really great.

Tim 121RVC - Good stuff. The armour has a nice weathered look.

Chris56 - What do I need to say? Amazing. Spot-on choice of models, incredible attention to detail on the backdrop. The bright, almost neon colours are perfect. My favorite entry this month by a distance. It looks like you're going to run away with the win this month as well, and it's richly deserved.

PossumCraft - Good painting and transfers, but it's all about the base. The base is fantastic.

Vejut - Where do you get these weird, brilliant models? I love those dogs! It's a bit difficult to see the details against quite a busy backdrop for the photo though.

Modock - I'm not sure why this isn't getting more votes. Perhaps we've just come to expect such high levels from you, Modock, so another impecably blended model is nothing special? I like it a lot anyway. The trousers are great.

Suzuteo - That Sigmarine army is coming along nicely. Another great conversion. I suspect when you bring it to the table you're going to turn some 40K players on to the quality of AOS models.

Thanks to everyone who has voted for me (or does so from this point on lol.) Thanks for the comment, Zerg. I'm aware that by going back to my Dark Eldar I'm retreading old ground, but there's very little in my collection that says "speed" as much as Hellions. They're fantastic models, too. I enjoyed painting them a lot, trying to wet-blend those blues. It looks a bit like i used an airbrush, but it's all hairy-brush work. I can't airbrush to save my life. I wonder if I could have done something to make the reds look a bit better.

See you next month, in the Shocktober fright fest! The easiest month to pick a model for, except if you're like me you have far too many models to pick from.

Feltmonkey: honestly, they're all stock stuff, mostly from either Oathsworn or Reaper I've found interesting and picked up over the years. Especially Reaper, they've got some seriously weird stuff especially in their backorder catalog if you take a deep dive. Sorry about the clutter- there's some more pics on a white background in the submission thread, but they were just so flattened and washed out, so I used my backups I'd snapped the night before without any staging.
I can't remember if I voted for Modock or not, but I think part of it is that its a better model probably than anything I've painted (those foot wraps are solid blends, for ex) ,but I kinda feel it lacks any flashy thing that grabs the eye and attention so in some ways the technical quality isn't as obvious? Like, last month his Infinity model had that smooth blended orange-red trenchcoat, stuff like that.

I kinda like hellions in general, and that blendes edge highlight is nice. With the red hair, I'm kinda mixed? In the wide group shot, it does look kinda flat, but the closeups make it look fairly natural, so I dunno?

JamesY: I haven't seen that colour scheme many times, but you've executed it beautifully. I would've drilled those gun barrels though.
Midget Gems: Great conversion, very creative!. The only thing I'd change is the dangling head on the back. Letting it hang more horizontally could imply the speedyness a bit more.
Queen_annes_revenge: My favorite kind of helicopter and a well painted one. As Feltmonkey said, the pics are pretty small and I don't see the link to the theme either.
F Smallhands: The head of the gryph immediatly draws my attention. I love the orange, nice blending there and on the blue skin/fur. Indeed, the rider unfortunately isn't so striking.
Power Elephant: Spooky stuff going on in that diorama. Original take on the theme: get the hell out of there!
Lipsdapips: Lovely camouflage! I like the lenses too.
Maharg: I'm impressed how well the details are visible with just pinks and purples. Inspiring! Is there a particular recipe/tutorial that you've used?
ZergSmasher: The golds look somewhat flat compared to the rest of the model, which has stains/washes and highlights. The whole model does have a convincing Nurgle look.
Evil D-185: Overall it looks great, but I'm intrigued by the cockpit. The red/black provide a mysterious tone.
Flinty: I've seen the WIP pics, otherwise I wouldn't have known these were converted crafts. Awesome use of all those parts!
CREEEEED: I like all that metal. Truly knights of the future.
Feltmonkey: Great skin tones and terrific blending on the blue as well.
Paradigm: I always think it's very brave to use a limited and mainly darker colour palette to paint a model and having a great result in the end. Kudos!
Chris56: Fantastic work on the bike, the neon blue is very striking. The red/black is just excellent.
Modock: Pretty crisp paintjob! Maybe a bit too much? I might have added a few subtle streaks of blood on his teeth and claws as werewolves are swift killers IMO.
Suzuteo: I really like the wings a lot, the combination of bright blue, red and gold works perfectly to draw attention. I think the figure itself could use some of those colours too on a couple of details here and there.

Thanks for the votes on my Ork Blitzer! Technical question: what would I have to use if I wanted to highlight the red armour just a little bit extra?

Looks like you used a pink edge highlight, so probably up to white I think? That said, moving through orange-reds would probably also have worked and let you keep it reading "red" while having a wider highlight. An example model for that would be modock's heckler and hollow man from last month.

Some really cool models this month!

My home renovations are almost over, so I thought it was about time I gave a bit more of a comment. I hope I haven't missed anyone!

Nevelon - love your jetbikes - nothing screams 'Eldar' like jetbikes and you have done a great paintjob with these. I'd love to see the rest of the army;

Rybrook - what a fantastic model! I love the old-school paintjob you've done on this, especially those rocking jets;

JamesY - I have always liked the Howling Griffons paintjob since I saw it win some competition to become a chapter in a really old White Dwarf decades ago and you have done a cracking job - one of my favourites for the month;

Midgetgems - how could I not vote for yet another awesome conversion from you? Your freehand and weathering work is getting really top-notch MG;

Coh Magnussen - I absolutely loved this idea! The paintjob is really crisp and spot-on as well. Well done;

queen_annes_revenge - I am really loving your realistic models! Have you put up any tutorials at all? I would really love to hear some of your tips;

F Smallhands - another great model, I contemplated choosing one of these guys myself. I really like the contrast between the blue skin/feathers and the orange head. Great job;

Brother Castor - wow, this looks like it popped out of the pages of White Dwarf itself - top work!;

KernelTerror - This is a super-difficult model to paint and you have done a really good job. The alternative colour scheme works really well;

Power Elephant - Okay....this is seriously good. I wasn't completely sold on the link to theme but this diorama is just too good to not vote for. Awesome lighting effects and great atmosphere - my number one for this month;

lipsdapips - another really crisp model from you lips...your painting is super good, well done;

Maharg - Great rendition of a really cool model. I've been wanting to paint some of these girls for a long time. Your choice of colours is really coherent and I especially like the highlighting on the armour;

Zerg - Again a great job on a really tough model. There are so many textures on this and you have gotten them looking really good. The rents on the front armour panel are awesome;

Evil D-185 - another wow! This came out of nowhere for me and blew me away so I voted for it. Great colour choices. Makes me want to watch Galactica again!;

Captain Magpie - another really tough model. Great work on the book and the 'dragon?' above it - great transitions. Love the base also, where does it come from?;

Flinty - the photos are not as clear as I would like but I can see you've done a really good job painting these guys and the modelling itself is very, very cool. Top work;

CREEEEED - Nice Grey Knights. Solid paint and a nice blue-ish cast to the metal. The osl on the backpack power-cores is especially good;

Felt - Dark Eldar are my favourite faction in 40K and your hellions are really nice. The faces are wonderful - I wish I could get the eyes as well as you have here;

Para - I think I have to acknowledge you as a true artist...your style brings a real ambience to whichever model you choose - autovote for this model;

Tim 121RVC - this orc is some of your best work yet. The texture on the skin and armour plates is impressive, voted;

PossumCraft - this model really stands out and I think the re-basing you did helped to emphasise how good a job you've done. Well done;

Vejut - you always have the most interesting models! Where do you get them? In Australia, these kind of models are really hard to come by unless you are willing to pay heaps for postage...anyhow, great job, the hound faces especially look quite realistic;

Modock - incredibly smooth transitions on the grey skin...as always. I am a bit (well, a lot) jealous of your silky-smooth colour changes. Voted;

Suzuteo - great contrast on this model. I always thought the wings on the offical Lemartes model were a bit wussy, so this is a very cool conversion. The contrast of colours also works well.

Anyhow, thank you to all who said nice things about my Escher jetbike - I'm really pleased that people like it.
See you all in Halloweeeeennnn month!

I find it really hard to get good white background photos too. I'm envious of those with a light box and tripod who can get amazing shots without the need for correcting afterwards.

Thanks guys. It's the lighting that makes that photo. If you take a look at this other photo with the Whirlwind in the background on my P&M blog you can see what I mean. With so many miniatures I couldn't take it on the windowsill. Same camera and filter, just different lighting (straight-on diffuse flash rather than angled flash and bright natural light coming from the side).

I'm glad you think I did good on the details, as they took plenty of time to pick out. As for the base, it almost ended up even plainer; the little puddles of green goo were an afterthought after talking to one of my friends. On future DG models, I'll probably plan them into my bases and make them bigger.
Tim 121RVC wrote:ZergSmasher: The golds look somewhat flat compared to the rest of the model, which has stains/washes and highlights. The whole model does have a convincing Nurgle look.

Yeah, I struggle with highlighting metallics. I did some edge highlighting of some of the gold details, but it doesn't show that well in these pics.

Thanks for the comments Queen Anne, Zerg, Rybrook, Felt, Tim121, Chris56 and any votes

It could be a new model for the Orkober release Felt, you never know
Comment noted Tim121, it did start out at a greater angle but I dropped the model while painting it, broke the head off and had to reattach. After it was glued noticed to late it could have been better.
Glad you like the base Queen Anne, yep tyres no longer needed for this guy
I do feel thanks to this monthly challenge my freehand has got a lot better, next step up for the freehand checkers is to edge highlight each one.

Nevelon - Always good solid paintingjobs from you, they look very speedy.

Rybrook - old skool and cool and the painting fits in with that style perfectly.

JamesY - Really like the very fine weathering/battle damage you have added they look great.

Midgetgems - Engine burn didn't quite work out right with the transition between the colours, should have done something else with the black fine it looks a bit plain

Coh Magnussen - Great idea, unfortunately very hard for you to photograph.

queen_annes_revenge - looks really cool, would love some bigger pics to see all the details.

F Smallhands - The Gryph really stands out, great colours.

Brother Castor - lovely edge highlighting on your tank

KernelTerror - You have such a unique style KT, your army most be quite a sight. I like the details on the wings.

Power Elephant - A big and very interesting piece to attempt, its very atmospheric and the glowing mushrooms are well done.

lipsdapips - Lovely work LDP, even really close up your painting is very clean and crisp.

Maharg - Nice shading and pink and purple combo,

Zerg - I'm always a fan of your Death Guard models, you seem to get it right every time. As previously said the base does need a bit more work.

Evil D-185 - great flamer effects and a nice bit of weathering, well done

Captain Magpie - Cool model, I like the blue shin on the feathers and the book with writing in is well done..

Flinty - Very interesting flying things and a good idea. Painting looks good.

CREEEEED - A really nice squad and well positioned,

Felt - Nice dark to light transition on the blue and red stop clour to draw the eye to the face, good work, should be getting more votes than they currently are

Para - great work on the boots and wings, does feel like he's about to leap up and fly away.

Tim 121RVC - shame you didnt have the time for the ground splitting base, really like how you have done the read armour.

Chris56 - By far the stand out entry, simple superb from the Red colour transition on the jetbike and the blue OSL to the detail on the Ganger.

PossumCraft - good sentinel but the base looks fantastic, would love bigger pics to see it better.

Vejut - The middle dog is my fave, has a nice dark face to brown body transition.

Modock - Being able to do that so quickly is a testament to your skill, lovely model.

Suzuteo - A well painted model, I think some shading and highlights on the wings would have really added to the model.

thanks. no i've never really thought about doing them. I usually just watch things on youtube and try them out. I swear by AK interactive weathering/diorama products, particularly the streaking fluids and pigment powders.

Some really cool models this month!

My home renovations are almost over, so I thought it was about time I gave a bit more of a comment. I hope I haven't missed anyone!

Captain Magpie - another really tough model. Great work on the book and the 'dragon?' above it - great transitions. Love the base also, where does it come from?;

I thought these shreckwulfen were fast assault troops, but they are damn slow on the scoreboard.
Yeah, the model is pretty dull, not even the pants helped...

feltmonkey wrote:CREEEEED - Nice tabletop squad of grey knights. Neatly done, and the red areas add interest. Some areas could do with some highlights rather than just the shading with a wash. Good overall, though.
Thanks, and yeah, the highlighting on the metal was a little difficult given how I did it, and the red areas were just highlighted, no wash, which I think I might change, maybe put a little nuln oil in the recesses.

Tim 121RVC wrote:CREEEEED: I like all that metal. Truly knights of the future.
Thanks

Chris56 wrote:CREEEEED - Nice Grey Knights. Solid paint and a nice blue-ish cast to the metal. The osl on the backpack power-cores is especially good
Thanks, although it was pretty much just ripped from how I do plasma, which was ripped from a youtube video.

Midget Gems wrote:CREEEEED - A really nice squad and well positioned
Yeah the GK sculpts are so much more dynamic than normal marine sculpts.

You love the T-Rex. Its both a hero and a Villain in the first two movies. It is the "king" of dinosaurs. Its the best. You love your T-rex.
Then comes along the frakking Spinosaurus who kills the T-rex, and the movie says "LOVE THIS NOW! HE IS BETTER" But...in your heart, you love the T-rex, who shouldn't have lost to no stupid Spinosaurus. So you hate the movie. And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Highlighting metallics is a massive ball-ache generally. I've found that the best thing for highlighting silver is Vallejo's Model Air Chrome. I don't use it through an airbrush, just paint it on. It's the shiniest paint I've ever used. Anyway I was way off, because for some reason I thought the reds were just washed and not highlighted. I guess it's a trick of the photograph, or just me being stupid. The silver actually looks fantastic.

Wow, thanks for all the votes and positive comments received, far more than I expected given the mold lines, and the quality of the competition.

I cast four votes this time, as I really couldn't decide on one. Rybrook, lipsdapips, Midget Gems and Chris56, outstanding entries all, that managed to stand out from all the other fantastic entries.
