I really can't grow a proper beard; there are too many bare patches on my face, so it would look weird. However, I do have a mustache that I haven't shaved off since it came in at around age 17 (and I'm 31 now).

Stopped shaving two years ago and haven’t looked back. Once you get through the 3-4 week period where it itches like hell its all good.
Have no problem growing a full thick beard, it’s just on top of my head where I struggle but hey that’s nothing that the clippers can’t solve.
Reminds me also that I’ve run out of beard oil.

I've had a hipster cthulhu beard for a long time. I started growing it fairly quickly after leaving home to go to college.
I keep thinking it's only a few inches long, but I accidentally pulled one of my beard hairs out the other day and it was probably 8-9 inches long, it was just so curly it looks a lot shorter unless it's stretched out.

I have a goatee rolling in at about 6 inches. Totally doable, just need to have bare skin right where the respirator makes contact to the face. Sideburns, short stache and long goat. Wear a respirator about once a week for the last couple years, just tuck the goat in.
Every year I have to get re-certified, part of that is fit-checking the respirator. Every year the instructor tells me I'll fail. I put it in my ponytail band, roll it in and pass with flying colors.
Doable, takes a tiny bit of work.
+Well damn. I totally misread your reply and gave you a bunch of info you already know. So, umm, carry on? +

I had a full vandyke for a while in college. I was clean shaven when I met my wife and she wanted to see me grow a beard. (It turns out shaving too closely was causing ingrown hairs.). She either really liked the beard or became too used to it, because she won't let me get rid of it, even for Halloween.
I usually let it get out to a few inches, until it gets too curly and fluffy to look kept, and then trim it down to Riker length.

Amen to that.
I grow a natural goatee. Only a few more years until I get to decide what I do with my facial features.

A goatee, petite goatee really.
I have problems with eczema on my face and it makes it difficult to grow anything proper. Too much facial hair and it itches like crazy. Shave too often and my skin flares up.

I don't want one - that's just what my face does if I don't shave every day. A great big bushy beard is beyond my genetics.

Mine has come and gone with the times. When I was a younger man working at a front desk in Banff I found I got a little more respect from guests simply by sporting a goatee. Mostly I've been scruffy. Later, as a dude with a wife and kids beard length was often a rough approximation of strain on the marraige at any point in time. Also, once you get one going in winter in canada its tempting to keep it till march.
This last decade Movember grew in popularity so I've experimented with mustaches and chops. (My wife says its cheating to grow the beard all october to jumpstart the project - I tell her I barely know what it's about anyways so who cares?). But generally I like kisses without a lot of complaining all the time so I usually keep it pretty clean.
Lately I've been modelling myself after J. Jonah Jameson so I'm rocking a little salt-and-pepper chin puff (instead of a JJJ's hitler 'stache). This also solves the lifelong problem of carefully shaving around a little mole. I was toying with the idea of some kind of facial hair with no mustache and after trying stuff and immediately shaving it off a few times I finally took her advice to google it. Immediately got a list of styles and what was at the end of the scroll? The chin puff, with a photo of John Travolta rocking one. Ha Ha Ha Ha -- Ya!

I would hope that in 2018 CE no one would willingly admit to that (of course, would be worse if they had a soul patch and frosted tips)

i drift between a short clipped beard and a couple inches, mostly a front goatee type deal with it still fairly short on the sides of my face
the few times i've tried growing it out to viking/wizard land, i've gotten fed up with it fairly quickly, plus the longer i let it go, the more i get questioned about why its a different color then the hair on top

Don't have to shave for work anymore, since we are now allow to grow our beards, gotta keep it a bit short, but it sure beats no beard.

Girlfriend says I look better with a beard. As I'm of the same opinion, I'm happy it makes her happy.

Short clipped beard, unless I've been lazy and haven't trimmed it for a few weeks.
My wife prefers me to have a beard, as long as I keep it tidy. So I have a couple of things that help: Lush Beard & Face Wash and Scruff Stuff Beard Oil
