...that I am now a proud owner of a Dark Elf Battalion.

So I ran the numbers on what came in the box, and I can easily field a 1000 point army just adding a sorcerer and a commander. I think I will be able to make a commander with the leftovers from the figures I wont use, and are springing for a sorcerer as we speak.

I'll be honest if there is an over the top cheesy army in WFB, its the dark elves. The skull action on their shields are almost as ridiculous as the skulls on the old skeleton warriors. BUT, I did some reading up on them, their culture and so on, but I loved the art on the more modern take of them so I figured why not.

So here is what I am building using RH:

Commander - 65
Sorcerer - 95
5 Cold One Knights with Lances, Champ, Standard, and Musician - 195
10 Corsairs with Champ, Standard, and Musician - 130
10 Dark Elf Warriors with Repeater Crossbows - 150

for about 700 after adding some gear for the characters. Then for 1000 will add:

10 Dark Elf Warriors with Spears, Shields, Champ, Standard, and Musician - 130
10 Corsairs with Champ, Standard, and Musician - 130
Repeater Crossbows for the Cold One Knights - 35

Which puts me at around 995. Good? Good.

I really hope the sprues come with extra goodies like the Bretonnians and Wood Elves. If not I will flip a table.

Are these guys fun to play?

5 Cold One Knights are fine.
Commander is fine. Sorceress is fine.
10 repeater crossbows fine. 10 Corsairs - a bit to small for my taste, I would stock them up to 15-20 so they can take at least some S3 shots. Maybe take that set of 10 corsairs of the addition to do so.

So I would suggest, based on your figures above:
Commander - 65
Sorcerer - 95
5 Cold One Knights with Lances, Champ, Standard, and Musician - 195
10 Corsairs with Champ, Standard, and Musician - 130
10 Dark Elf Warriors with Repeater Crossbows - 150

for about 700 after adding some gear for the characters. Then for 1000 will add:

1 Reaper Bolt Thrower 100
5 Dark Riders roundabout 100
10 additional Corsairs for exisiting unit => 100

1000 points

If you need to save on points to get it perfectly fit in the 1000 points, you could remove musicians point-wise and rule-wise (and place them on the table anyway if you like the look of a full command unit).

How long until a killjoy mod renames the thread "I have got some Dark Elves."

Not long I reckon.

I'm happy with your load out, though I personally lean towards 10 person ballistic units and 20 person combat regiments.

I'm also fairly impressed with how that battalion looks, given that there wasn't enough plastics in the DE range in 6th to even HAVE a Battalion.

Bitch elves!

Naah, hardly need them in 6th. Not at 1000 points.

Witch Elves are too easy to lead around on a leash with their Frenzy liability, it'd be better to have something like Black Guard or Executioners.

Geez Witch Elves are pretty popular.

Well to be honest I do not like having two of the same units, like the Corsairs, but thats what came in the box. I guess if I were to get some Witch Elves, I could swap out one of those units.

Did they make a plastic Dark Elf Bolt Repeater? All I am finding are metal ones on Ebay. Thought I would get one of these 'just in case' one day.

Also, I saw some bits for the Dreadlord that comes with the Black Dragon. I will never play a Black Dragon, but I am interested in all the bits that come with it for the two character options. I like Hela-crazy-like headgear for the Dark Elves. Hate to spend all that money on a model I will never use though. Has anyone built a dragon before?

Yes I have. It was the old Black Dragon Model with Malekith as a rider.
I modified the head a little, I used the head piece with nostrils of the black dragon as lower jaw and filled up the holes with green stuff. As head piece, I used the plastic dragon head of a newer dragon kit. I can't remember where I got that from I found the head looks more impressive that way.

I also swapped the rider, I used a Dark Rider with some metal sword arm bit I had from -I-can't-remember-. As shield, I used a metal shield of the old metal cold one knights.

I built Malekith on foot to lead the Black Guard, using the legs of an old metal executioner model as base.

You like running units of ten yes?

Ten Corsairs with extra hand weapons.
Ten Corsairs with repeater pistols.

You have two very different units then

No, but they did do several styles of metal ones, and later moved to finecast of course. I like the 5th ediiton RBT with a crossbow and two magazines on top. got three of those deliberately. Others prefer the RBT with large vertical prods.

There is a lot of good stuff on that kit.
Tip, dont add the metal plates to the dragon, this way its just a dragon and faction neutral.
Second Tip, dont glue the saddle to the dragon. Instead place the saddle in position and drill right the way through it at the seat and deep into the dragons neck. Drill a second hold near the front of the saddle into the dragons neck. When you are sure it fits by dryfitting metal rods through the holes glue the front rod into the hole and putty over the hole in the saddle. then drill up through the seat of your chosen armoured rider and skanky rider. hen you have checked the hole fit glue rods into both riders.
Now you will have a plain dragon with two small holes in the top of its neck, paint it so the holes are barely noticable. when you want a rider place the saddle in place through the front hole, then pin the saddle in place by adding the rider pinned through the saddle into the dragon, as the saddle is dry pinned twice it should not move, the rider is dry pinned once but its a deep pin and the legs also secure the model. Now you have a model dragon that can be used alone and with choice of rider. There is no reason you couldnt make other riders even from otherc factionsa for this model including Karl Franz, various wood and high elves or even a chaos lord.
