I am assuming that in a non campaign matched play game that commanders have to follow the same restrictions as other specialists (pg 66 and 67 main rules) and only be level 1? Or am I confusing deciding the level of your commander with the level of whatever speciality you chose for them?

Commanders don't level normally. You buy them at the level you want, and each level has its own point costs

So far Commanders missions tells you the KT points it's increased up to 200 points.

This allow a great tactical choice wanna field a 50 point lvl 1 commander and use the other 50 points in regular Kill Team models or want to field a 200 lvl 4 commander figthing alone against the whole enemy KT?

Perfect. And then the specialist choice you choose for the commander would be subject to the same matched play restrictions as the other specialists, which makes sense. Thanks.

What other restrictions do you mean?
No more than one? I would have thought you can only take one commander in a game.

Commanders also get a Specialism, same as a Specialist. They don't count against your 3 Specialist count, and they have their own unique trees to pick from.
You can have multiple Commanders BUT you cannot have multiple Commanders of the same types.

So let's say you're playing Drukhari.
Your Commander options are Archon, Succubus, and Haemonculus.
They all have access to the Melee and Ferocity Specialisms.

You can have the Archon take Ferocity and Succubus take Melee, but the Haemonculus has to take Fortitude, Strength, or Logistics since you can't have more than one Specialist with the same tree.

One thing I keep circling back too is page 67 of the core rules where it says that in normal matched play you can only include level 1 specialists. Then in the commanders book on page 15 under commander levels it tells you to reference the core book page 67. I feel like this means that for normal matched play pick up games a Commander can only be level 1?

You can only include Lvl1 specialists in a "normal matched play game" because they must always start at Lvl1.

Even without that statement (which is marked as a note) it would still be impossible to take any specialist that isn't Lvl1 in a non-campaign game because there is simply no mechanism to do so. That is not the case for commanders.

But as soon as you take a specialism for your commander would it not then fall under the specialists caveats on page 67 (as they redirect you to in the commanders book)? I'm not saying you're wrong, I am just genuinely on the fence

I see that note as a reminder.

If you remove that note it doesn't change the status of specialists outside of campaigns - they don't need a rule that says they aren't allowed, there is no option to take them.

If we take that statement as a restriction it is completely pointless and redundant. (why have a restriction on taking something that you can't take anyway?)

On the other hand, commanders above lvl1 do need a specific rule to forbid them.

Also consider that the note applies to "normal matched play games" - is a commander matched play game a "normal" one?

I really does need a clarification - it would be very useful if GW could differentiate between actual rules and notes/examples.

@Scott-S6 - good points. I think until clarification I'll just ask my opponents how they want to play it and be ready either way

Commander missions still require you to be Battleforged (unless it's a specific narrative or open mission), and a Battleforged Killteam requires at least 3 models, including one leader.

So AFAIK you can't have a solo Commander legally in any matched play missions.

When you include a Commander, you can choose Commander levels, and Commander Traits. Now, the traits are optional but you MUST pick a level.

Edit: Hmmm, they do reference Pg. 66-67 where the Worth their Weight restrictive rule is listed, but if we are to believe it applies to Commanders we would also have to add an ADDITIONAL +4, +8, and +12 to pts values for increasing level, and I just don't think that is what was intended.

May be relevant, but the article for Rogue Trader noted that you can pick (the named characters) Level from the start. Not sure if that is a special rule only for that Rogue Trader though, perhaps someone who actually has the expansion can fill us in?
