The Land Speeder looks awesome, very stylish. They've clearly been on Pimp my Speeder.

How are the high elves coming on?

I was at a warhammer 8th edition tournament this weekend and one of my opponents was using the old monopose Highelves and they impressed me so much, a good paintjob can really make them standout.

Also kudos on the speeder, it's looking sharp.

Yeah, the Panthers like their bling that’s for sure, kinda contributes to their fall to Chaos; Slaanesh by way of Nurgle.

No further progress as yet, they’ll get their next step once the Speeder is done. It’s good to hear that I’m not alone in using the monopose Elves. I quite like the highly disciplined look, it has quite an Elvish feel I think. It’ll be great to get them finished after all these years that’s for sure!

Not much progress of late as real life has been busy with Grandparents visiting. Instead I’ve been experimenting with finishes for 3D printed parts, trying filler primer and polyurethane varnish. Both seem good, but the polyurethane needs white spirits for cleaning, so I’m hoping the filler primer works out! Here are the tests before I prime them black;

I did however get a couple of hours last night whilst Mrs gobert collected MIL from the Airport. I finished off the gold bits, then took the plunge on choosing panels to be purple. I also started on the many Leadbelcher bits, but gave up before I finished as my decanted paint ran out. I’ll save finishing that for my next session

I think it’s starting to have a similar feel to my bikes, so I’m happy it’s heading in the right direction, though I’m not sure whether I’ve overdone the number of panels that are purple (the spots behind the vent are also purple. Let me know what you guys think

Thanks for looking!

Evening all, so my printer has been very busy this week. I’ve decided to organise a games night and Blackstone Fortress will be the first game we play, so I bought and am printing the Dragons Rest terrain set to make it easier to spot when a mini is in cover. So far I’m pretty impressed, it’s printing off nicely and the stls are really cool. I’ll probably be needing more filament though, good job Amazon Prime is next day delivery!

As a test run I’ve printed off bases for the complete set of minis. My last post showed some of the tests of different ways to smooth out the printed finish. To be honest there wasn’t much to choose between any of them, but the spray on filler primer was easier than the polyurethane varnish as it didn’t need white spirits to clean up. All of the bases got 2 coats of that, a quick sanding then one coat of black. I had quite a few duplicate bases so distributed them amongst the different squads so hopefully I’ll not have matching bases in the same group.

First up were the de-spiked Traitor Guard squad;

They all came off their original bases pretty easily and I decided to try to use remnants of their slot tabs as pins for them to fit in the new bases. Most ended up with a hole drilled where their foot goes, though a couple had slots cut so I could keep their built in bits of terrain/debris. This squad was a test for the terrain files as I used 3 dry brushes of progressively lighter blues; Enchanted, Hoeth and Space Wolves Grey. For each base I tried to give an area that’s glowing so concentrated on that area a bit more with each dry brush. I then thinned some SW Grey to line some of the triangles. A few of the lower triangles also got blacked out as I liked his Guy from Mid Winter Minis had done his. A black rim and edges where the floor falls away and they were done.

Next up was the Spindle Drones;

They got the same treatment but with Sybarite and Gauss Blaster green replacing the blues. The SW grey was replaced with a mix of Gauss Blaster and Skull White. One of the bases had a bit flat area so it got a few squiggles to the lightest colour.

Overall I’m really pleased how they look. The texture from the printer adds to the look I think, even if the rims are a bit ridged! I’m tempted to do away with the tabs altogether for the next group as it was a real faff getting them to fit, though they might not survive being used in a game if I do. In any case, I’ve chosen the colours I’ll use on the rest of the 25mm bases now and can’t wait to get them all done!

The other thing I’m torn about is whether these guys should add to my running total? It’s been quite a bit of prep, so I’m edging towards adding them on, yeah, why not!?!

Thanks for looking!

Those bases look amazing. The combination of the pattern and the paint job work really well.

Looking forward to seeing the printed scenery as it think it makes a big difference. The boards are nice, but tracking cover through white lines breaks immersion a touch.

Ha, yeah, he needs to push his way to the front of the grey priming queue along with the Guardian drones too. Them and the 3 Plague Marines are the only minis left to paint to complete my collection!

Thanks Flinty, the paint on the bases is so easy thanks to the printer . The terrain is already looking really cool, even without paint. I’m gonna need some bigger brushes for drybrushing it all though!

Thanks LTMW, I was always amazed that GW didn’t do sculpted bases and terrain for BSF. Thankfully the internet delivers!
Olthannon wrote:Love those bases Gobert, such a cool idea. That lighting effect looks spot on.

Thanks Olthannon, I’m pretty chuffed how they’re coming out

I spent this evening painting and watching The Defiant Ones on Netflix (it’s amazing how driven these music industry guys are and how good they are at getting the most from other each other!). I decided to stick with trimming the tabs to create pins, and I got better at it with each group. I started with the Ur Ghuls, they got orange bases to go with their orange hands and eyes;

Next were the Poxwalkers, who got a nurgley green colour, for obvious reasons

And finally I did the Chaos Cultists from Escalation, who got a bright green to match their leaders flamer, though I forgot to do him

I haven’t done the light coloured bits along the edges of some triangle like I did the first bunch. Must revisit them when I use the colours again on the bigger bases. The last of the little bases of the second Traitor Guard squad will be pinky purple, they’ll be up next before I move on to the bigger bases (though I still have the ratlings and borewyrms to do I suppose)

Cheers Theo! Hopefully the latest batch match up to the early runners.

After a week away with the kids today was back to normality, with a day of chores. Having gotten them done and the kids to bed it was P&M time. I went more factory like this time and got a whole bunch of minis matched to base first then smashed out new bases for this lot;
Spikey Traitor Guard

Chaos Beastmen

Traitor Commissar

Negavolt Cultists

Firebrand Cultist

Chaos Space Marines

Rogue Psykers

Pretty chuffed with them, especially the Beastmen! That’s most of BSF rebased now, with the explorers being the main lot to rebase now. I think I’ll add a bit more to their bases, maybe some blood splatter? The pink lightning some of the squares have? Two tones? Any other ideas?

Thanks for looking !

Cheers, I love toyed with the silver or gold for the explorers, but in the end I decided to try to relocate the transport tiles. They’re 2-sided tiles, one is turquoise with blood stains and the other a pale green but clean. I think I’ll use those to differentiate the Core set explorers and the Escalation expansion minis, the core set being more battle hardened, so getting the bloody tiles! Both sets also have pink lightning which I’ve tried to replicate. So far I’ve not completed 2 of the Escalation minis, so I’ll wait to do their bases, but here are the Core set explorers;

I think they turned out pretty well and the match the tile reasonably too. To finish the core set I only have Obsidius Mallex to do, I need to prime a larger base for him though

Thanks for looking

As others have noted, the outcome of your work on these bases is striking, very high-quality painting. What I very much appreciate is your showing the colors you used to create your layering and highlighting effects. I have a poor eye for color combination, and even trying to use an artist's 'color wheel' does not help me a great deal (Hulk SMASH!!!!!). In many cases, the colors you have combined are not intuitively complimentary- until one sees the finished result.

Rock on!

Hi Meer_Cat, I’m glad you liked having the paints behind the minis. It was a quick way of documenting what I’d done on each in case I wanted to repeat any of the colours. It came in very handy for the explorers. As for combining them I store my paints in a rack. To help spot highlight colours they’re in rainbow order with lighter colours usually at the transition points. Cheating with the GW paint app helps too! The colour wheel does get used sometimes, either opposites or triangles depending what I feel like doing!

Thanks Olthannon, probably the explorers are my favourites, but I like how they’ve all come out really. The only ones I’m a bit disappointed with are the purple bases Traitor guard and the blue on the commissars base.

No painting updates today or tonight, but thanks for all the comments, spurring me on to more painting. In other hobby news a mate is coming round tonight to give BSF a go over a couple of beers. My Printer has been churning out terrain, but I’ve not had the time to prep it for priming let alone paint it. I’m really excited how good it looks already, and will try to get an action photo or 2 even if the terrain is naked!

So I totally forgot to take a photo of the Blackstone Fortress game on progress. We had fun and all of our characters managed to survive the first expedition, though it was close a couple of times! We’re trying to get another evening planned, so I’m looking forward to that.

Another Sunday night, another Grand Prix to watch whilst painting (another good race, with plenty of controversy). I decide to crack on with the Land Speeder,l; finishing off the Leadbelcher basecoat, tidied the black up a bit, then hit it with the Nuln Oil wash. Instead of the usual bright golds on the underside and bumper I thought it’s be nice to do them a bit darker, so just drybrushed them for a much duller finish. The top side bits kept the full on shine, getting proper Retributor coats and that’s where I left it for tonight;

It’s hard to see the progress, but it’s there I promise! The gold looks like it might need another coat before highlights I think, but the full metal on the underside is looking nice. I might see about some oily streaks down there too? I actually gave the black a coat of Nuln oil to take some of the sheen off the Vallejo black, sadly it ended up patchy so I’ll have to redo all of the black.

In other news I’m considering an airbrush to speed up basecoating. As that’s all I’m doing quietness and cheapness are my main considerations. For the quietness I’ve been looking at battery powered ones. Has anyone sampled one or could recommend one?

Thanks for looking

PS- has anyone been having Dakka load slowly today/yesterday? It took an age to load the images from the gallery
