Is there a rule for shooting enemies that do not Assault?

I don't have Trederra, Scafford Gang or Blasted Wastes; every enemy I have with a ranged attack has Assault. However, I want to adapt my Star Wars Stormtroopers to the game, so I would like a rule where they stop and shoot at range or try to avoid melee. Is there an established rule or should I just make one up?

(For those curious, I plan to give them Def 5, 2 W, R 5+ range 6 damage P 2 shots, move 5, initiative 3., Combat 5+ damage 1. But I am open to ideas on how to make them more flavorful.)

Also, my son really wants to play as Frodo or another Hobbit with the One Ring. How do you think this would be best accomplished? I was planning to use the Saloon Girl's stats (with maybe more willpower) and then add Sting (1 combat, +2 damage against demons and void) and the One Ring (Frodo cannot be targeted unless he attacks an enemy and can move through enemies, causes increasing corruption hits as it is used [one hit the first turn, two the second, etc.] and requires one grit to stop using, two grit if Frodo gains any corruption points.). What other ways can I make the character feel more authentic?

Yes, there is a rule that enemy which prefers ranged attack instead of close combat, will keep away from the heroes and shoot. Things like the Lost Army and Undead Outlaws have it.
It will fit perfectly with your stormtroopers.

Let me check the actual rule when I get home.

SHOOTOUT
Enemies with shootout prefer ranged attacks over melee. They move and target using SHOOTOUT markers with the following procedure:

Ambush: When ambushing, select a Random Hero and Place all of the SHOOTOUT enemies on that Hero's map tile, as far from any Heroes as possible.

Retreat: If adjacent to a Hero at the start of its Activation, roll a D6. On 4+, makes a Free Move along the shortest distance to no longer be adjacent. Otherwise make a Melee Attack against a Random adjacent Hero this turn.

Target: Target a Random Hero without a Shootout marker yet, and Move the shortest distance to be within Range and LOS (while not ending adjacent to any Heroes). May move through other Enemy models of the same Type. If reached, Place a Shootout marker on the target.

Otherwise, at the end of its Move, Target a new Random Hero that is within Range and LOS and Place a Shootout marker on them.

Make ranged attacks: Once all of the Enemy group has moved and placed Shootout markers, roll the Ranged attacks against the Heroes for each Shootout marker on them. Then, remove all Shootout markers.

I have the results of the last chamber: You are a horrible person.
That's what it says: A horrible person...
We weren't even testing for that.

Thanks! Those rules are perfect. Not sure what I'll use for shootout markers, or if they are strictly necessary, but those mechanics will be perfect, especially ambush and retreat.

They're not strictly necessary, they basically exist to make sure the attacks are as spread out as possible. SoB tries to avoid piling attacks on one player.

You need markers to ensure that the incoming shots are distributed equally among the heroes.

But since the markers stay on map just for the enemy activation phase and are then removed, any markers you have will be fine to use (other markers, coins, dead flies...)

We finally got a game in with the Hobbit and Stormtroopers. We all thought the Stormtrooper rules worked really well. Their defense (armor) warded off most bullets, but critical hits took them right out, and they mostly missed their shots, but when they did hit it hurt. We used the Shootout rules for retreating from close combat to "chase" them around the board, and even managed to force a couple to fall into a vortex. (We imitated the Willhelm Scream for authenticity.)

We ended up changing some of the rules for the hobbit during the game. The increasing corruption hits were too strong, so we decided to change the rule to one corruption hit per turn. We also gave him the rule all hits are critical hits when using the ring, since he is invisible. As the melee only character, the hobbit had to plow into enemies all the time, which put him at risk for dynamite damage...

Looks fun, I've been working (slowly) on rules for various miniatures I have.
