A new kickstarter from Petersen Games, Hyperspace, has started. It is a 4X style game with 4 unique civilizations in the base box. Can be upgraded for 5-6 players. 21 additional unique civilizations are offered as add ons.

EDIT: As always, forgot to include the link...

There are 4 player colours (upgraded to 6 player colours) of the Basic units in the game (Starbases, Colonies, Corvettes, Destroyers and Cruisers)

These are identical per player.

Then, on top of that, each civilization has Citizens and Super Ships that are unique per civilization.

I have the results of the last chamber: You are a horrible person.
That's what it says: A horrible person...
We weren't even testing for that.

The rules don't sound like my bag but I really want the miniatures. Is the 5th player expansion available as an add on? If not, does anyone want to work out an arrangement?

I'd buy star bases if they were to be had on their own.

I'd consider the game, but it is hard enough drumming up a game of 40K without teaching new games, alas.

THIS! (These... )

I love the minis, and I'm sure the game would be cool if I had someone to Sherpa me through the first playthrough or two (I suck at learning new games straight from the book, and youtube vids don't help much either).

As with A LOT of board games with cool minis, I wish they'd just have an option for the minis separately. In most instances an 'all the miniatures only', and 'maybe' an artbook, would be the best option for me. It's a shame, but I think if more KS did this, though they'd lose some folks to not buying the game stuff, they'd gain more in as a whole, who just want minis. I know there are some who only buy stuff if it comes with a game, and there's nothing wrong with that. I guess I just need to start buying this stuff and selling the games with no minis on ebay?

I have read the rules (you can download them from the KS page). This is not a hard game to learn to play or teach to others.

It is also far shorter game than your typical 4X game. About 2 hours of playtime (compared to 8+ hours of Twilight Imperium).

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The game comes with a kickstarter bonus of native aliens (they live on a planet and you can enslave, erm, uplift them as a part of your civilization.

The kickstarter doesn't have any stretchgoals, but there are some surprises. everything is already part of the pledges, but some things will be revealed as time goes By, to keep the interest up.

First two space monsters are already revealed:

They tried offering just the minis for their first Cthulhu Wars kickstarter as lots of people asked for if, but it ended up being nothing but a nuisance for them as almost nobody ended up ordering them

(perhaps because of the cost, perhaps because backers got minis as stretch goals that wouldn't have been used for the game and people thought they'd be able to get stuff even cheaper on ebay, perhaps they got nervous about boardgame plastic, but probably because most of they were never really seriously interested in buying)

so I can't see they trying that again

That's a crying shame, I would cheerfully throw money at them for the ships but I have no interest in the game.

I don't remembering them offering minis only during Cthulhu Wars...unless you mean the second campaign that was so low profile I didn't hear about it until after it was too late.

I'm really interested in this one, so if you guys are interested in trying it at some undisclosed future date that are in the SoCal area I'd be willing to host.

I enjoy 4x games but don't have days to devote to leaving it on the table. Small games like the Tiny Epic series of games scratch a similar itch, but tend to finish up right when things start to get juicy.

This also really doesn't sound that complicated, and if it's anything like Cthulhu Wars, it'll be pretty asymmetric and varied in how it plays.

I know Sandy mentioned all the Cosmic Encounters races being a big influence on the various civilizations in this.

Plus giant space monsters are always a nice bonus. Picking out what civs to get will be a challenge.

Now if he'd hurry up on Planet Apocalypse and getting that one out the door...

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!

I guess I’m alone in thinking:
I love to try this game, if it weren’t for al these useless miniatures needlessly driving up the price.

Here are the expansion civs. Each civ uses the generic set of units (Starbases, Colonies, Corvettes, Destroyers and Cruisers) and add unique Citizens and Super Ships to the mix. The Citizens and Supers are grey colored and will get a base ring of players colour.

Each Civilization has 2 unique supertechs (which no other civ has Access to) 2 unique abilities and 1 unique weakness. So the civilizations are asymmetrical (apart from the Basic units which are the same for each Civ).

The pledge levels allow you to pick and choose which Civs you want as part of the pledge. To help the choise, Sandy has filmed an introduction video of each Civ in the game. They will be revealed as time goes By and before the KS ends, you will be able to see them all.

Some people want the game, but not the miniatures.

Some people want the miniatures, but not the game.

Sounds like a deal could be made here?

Also, for those who are interested in the gameplay, the base game can be played in Tabletopia. The link is in the KS front page.

Watching some of the videos with sandy talking about the different races, is kind of amazing. Giant space fungus. A race of billions of creatures where it’s just one individual constantly moving back and forth in time, and interacting with itself. Another race who’s constantly offended when it’s not including in everyone else’s diplomatic endeavors. Some fun concepts. Sandy definitly knows how to create interesting races.

If the games really only take 2 hours to play, it would be fun to meet somewhere and try it.

Unsurpsingly, this being Sandy Petersen game, five of the civilizations in this game are from Cthulhu Mythos. The Starspawn faction even starts from Earth as their home planet. Humanity has mostly been eaten, with the remnants having fled to the depths of space. Looks like the Cthulhu faction officially won the Cthulhu Wars!

What pledge level is required to get all those alien civ minis?
I'm salivating.

Or, does someone want to make a deal, maybe?

No, the offered the faction mini's separately during the first CW.

My guess is that the additional cost of handling jacks up the price of a "miniatures only" pledge, so it's not worth it to the creator to offer something that may as much as the game to them for a lower price.

Some companies (eg. Folklore) package the miniatures separately from the game, so can offer a "miniatures only" product.

Unfortunately, while it's not cost-effective for the creator for offer a "miniatures only pledge" that doesn't mean a backer wouldn't also pay less for shipping costs, particularly an international one.

If you mean just the minis, there is no pledge level for that.

If you mean the minis and gaming material, the $299 pledge level gives you everything except the neoprene mat and physical art book.

The other, lesser, pledge levels give you less amount of civs, but you get to choose which ones to get. You can also get the civ of your choise as an add on, $10 each.

Each civ comes with 2 super ships and 4 citizen minis + the needed gaming material.

The space monsters are free for any pledge level and many more will be revealed before the kickstarter ends.
EDIT: sorry, the lowest, $69 level, won't get the space monsters. The others will.

If pledge a bit higher, it'll include the 5/6 player expansion which I probably won't need seeing as how we tend to play 3/4 games usually, meaning plenty of ships will be available to swap and trade with the SoCal folks if they're interested...

Arthur Petersen posted a picture in BGG to show the scale of the models (if you are familiar with Twilight Imperium game)
Spoilers as the pic is big. Note, these models are from the Test Pilot kit. The actual models are of similar size, but will have more details.

I'll buy into that. And perhaps add some add ons to your pledge if that's cool.

Out of curiosity, where would you people use these models?

Many people here seem to want the models, but not the game. Why? I don't see much use for ship models of this scale if not used in a game like this one.

So, where are you planning to use these ships?

Less so the ships for me, and more so the monster figs. The Thoth & the Yaddith look particularly cool to me. I have no use for the space ships, though they do look nice.

I can have an entire Battle of the Line with pew pews while on hold with my insurance company.

I have the game Fleets, but all the ships are the same and boring. I could also use more exciting pieces for Monopoly, Sorry and their ilk.

But yeah, spaceships are fun all by themselves.

Well if you are bored enough check out the link to the campaign I am running in my sig. There are loads of great games that are rather scale agnostic out there (most just measure peg to peg so the actual model doesn't matter at all). Worth checking some out.
