Could someone please list the current matched play rules and where the official source for the latest rule is please?

e.g. BRB, Big FAQ 1, Big FAQ 2, CA 2017, CA 2018 etc.

Thanks.

Everything you need is in the Rulebook, CA18 and Big FAQ 2.

CA17 and Big FAQ 1 are obsolete, AFAIK.

That would make sense as GW have removed CA 2017 from the store and Warhammer Community have removed Big FAQ 1 from the FAQs page.

So is GW's strategy that you only need the BRB, latest CA and latest FAQ to have a full set of matched play rules?

Plus codex+it's faq+supplements+their faq. And not sure if that's even enough actually. Oh and don't forget to check their FB as well in case something pops up there as well

I'm specifically talking about the latest matched play RAW, not faction-specific rules.

Good news, I made a list. You currently need Eighty Eight documents to play 40k.

Cheexsta has it right for just base rules though, BRB, Latest CA, and the latest FAQs for both, along with the latest "Big FAQ" for beta rules.

The Echoes from the Warp article in the latest (February) WD finally does do a good job of explaining what goes in the FAQ and what goes in CA (although it still doesn't say that the latest CA and FAQ supersede the previous editions).

From another thread (I'd forgotten I'd emailed GW they took so long to respond):
Brother Castor wrote:So I took the opportunity to email GW to ask how they would advise I find the latest matched play rules and beta rules in the multitude of documents they have now published. This was their response:

From uk.custserv@gwplc.com
Hello,

Thanks for your email.

The latest Matched Play rules can be found in our Core Rulebook, and in Chapter Approved 2018, with all relevant FAQs and Erratas applied, which can be found here. Chapter Approved 2018 supersedes Chapter Approved 2017, the 2017 edition should not be referred to for points updates. All our Beta rules can be found here.

I hope I've been of assistance with this, but if there's anything else I can help with, please let me know.

Kind Regards,

That's an interesting definition of the word "need". You don't need anywhere near 88 documents and it's ridiculous hyperbole to suggest that's even remotely accurate. In all my games of 8th edition I think I've needed at most half a dozen rules sources for any one game.

#JustBCBthings.

It's his usual hyperbole, just ignore it.

I'll agree that 88 is an exaggeration. No one needs EVERY SINGLE rules text, at least, not in a single game. (I'm sure there's someone out there who has every single army, with FW and legacy options, but they don't play them all in the same game.)

But I think we can also agree that you need too many books and documents anyway.

Yes, it's intentionally hyperbolic but also not inaccurate.
