After decades as one of the legendary holy grail games of the tabletop, Frank Herbert’s Dune is coming back.

Based on the epic sci-fi novel and originally published in 1979, Dune was created by the trio of designers behind the hugely influential Cosmic Encounter – Bill Eberle, Jack Kittredge and Peter Olotka – who evolved elements of their earlier design to fit Herbert’s visionary universe of spice and sandworms.

The first edition was followed by a second edition in 1984 to tie in with David Lynch’s troubled Dune film, accompanied by two official expansion packs: The Duel and Spice Harvest. Two more rules variants were published in gaming magazines, the last being 1990’s The Landsraad Maneuver.

Despite widespread acclaim among players, the 1984 reissue of Dune was the game’s death knell. After the movie flopped in cinemas, the board game’s sales suddenly dropped off. The second edition would be the last available English-language version of the original game for more than 30 years. (A French edition published in the early nineties would be the final re-release of any kind.)

In the meantime, the combination of Dune’s high reputation and low availability meant that copies became treasured artefacts among collectors, fetching up to hundreds of pounds on site such as eBay and forcing avid fans to seek out print-and-play alternates to get a taste of the original.

While licensing issues would mean that Dune as it was originally published wouldn’t return for decades, its deception- and diplomacy-heavy gameplay was reimagined for the universe of Twilight Imperium in 2012’s Rex: Final Days of an Empire.

Now, what seemed impossible for so long has finally happened: Dune is getting a reprint.

Behind the upcoming new edition is Gale Force Nine, the well-regarded studio behind licensed games such as Firefly Adventures, Star Trek Ascendancy and Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem, which announced last summer that it was working on multiple tabletop games set in the Dune universe.

As well as original games “drawing from the full scope of the Dune franchise”, Gale Force Nine confirmed it would also produce several direct tie-ins to the upcoming cinematic reboot of Dune from Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve due for release next year.

Gale Force Nine’s announcement of its Dune reprint at the GAMA trade fair was initially reported by There Will Be Games, before original co-designer Peter Olotka subsequently confirmed the news on Twitter, teasing that the revised edition will be “better than ever”. The first image of the new edition appears to show revised artwork for the box and map board – further details are yet to be announced.

The release date for the Dune reprint is still to be confirmed, and Gale Force Nine has not revealed any of its other upcoming titles set in the universe.

I have been waiting for this reprint. I own 4 copies of the original AH version, a Descartes version, and the FFG reprint. And The Dice Must Flow.

This will be an automatic add. Probably get 2 of them.

Urusei Yatsura, Cerebus the Aardvark, Machiavelli, Plato and Happy Days. So, how was your childhood?

Nice to know, shame they can't be a bit more precise about when this is likely to see the light of day though.

Surprisingly they didn't just come up with a new game considering the remake is about a year away. Still, this reprint is most welcome...

Looks okay, not a particularly interesting game to look at on the table though. I'll probably pass on this and go for the eventual new stuff that has an aesthetic and style more in line with the new film. I do like miniatures to be involved in board games though, so hopefully that becomes a thing.

The most interesting part is that the pictures shown are both of the alternate version put out on Boardgamegeek by user Ilya. I know because I spent about 5 hours one winter day printing out and crafting everything from map board to player shields to all the cards. I absolutely love Ilya's art style; I think I own about 5 print-and plays over the past few years, some of which are just re-skins of older games, some of which are all new games where Ilya was the artist.

Dune is quite a fun little area-control game, but to get the best out of all the backstabbing and political dealing involved it really needs at least 3-6 players to really shine, so just can't be sufficiently fun enough as a 2-player game.

Woot! The original Dune game quickly surplanted Risk as our family game when I was growing up. My mom always tried to pull off the Bene Gesserit trick to no avsil. And I always wanted to play Atriedes with their precognition. Nothing like being able to keep a loyal leader alive, or knowing you can kill the other guy if you have the right weapon. Sadly, our copy was lost years ago and replacing it at eBay prices was just too expensive to justify... Glad to see it back in print!

Nice. My copy of the game is getting a little worn. It'll be nice to have a less collectible version to play while my original sits pretty on a shelf.

Just want to reiterate that the images shown at Gama don’t have anything to do wity what GF9 will eventually release.

If GF9 knows anything about the production design of Denis Villeneuve’s film, they are most probably under a pretty strict NDA.

Also, GF9 cannot show images of the original game — those images would still be owned by Hasbro through Avalon Hill.

But as to Ilya’s images? Perhaps GF9 got permission to show them. Perhaps Ilya released them into the public domain to cut any liability related to, essentially, bootlegging the Avalon Hill game.

In any case, GF9 needed something for its presentation and could neither show the original box art/board art nor anything from the upcoming movie.

So we get this confusing placeholder.

Well, I hope this post helps clear up that confusion somewhat.

Gale Force Nine has released new details about its upcoming Dune board game, which will release on August 24.
Announced last year (see “Exclusive: Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune’ Comes to Tabletop”), the Dune board game draws from the entire Dune franchise to create a game of politics, intrigue, and warfare on the desert planet of Arrakis. Players assume control of six different factions, from the mysterious Bene Gesserit to the devious Harkonnen, each with their own blend of advantages and special abilities. Over ten rounds, the factions compete for control of Arrakis and its all-important Spice.

Dune will be an updated version of the classic 1979 Avalon Hill game Frank Herbert’s Dune, which has been out of print for some time. The GF9 team has cleared up some of the game rules and made some minor tweaks, while maintaining the core of the original game.

The game will include 1 gameboard showing, 5 player shields, 5 player aids, 30 large leader discs, tokens and player markers for each faction, 156 Spice tokens, 2 Battle Wheels, and 166 cards. It will include both basic “quick start” rules and advanced rules, as well as a synopsis of the Dune story. Dune is intended for 2 to 6 players, and takes at least two hours to play. MSRP is $50.00.
Frank Herbert’s science fiction classic is also inspiring both a television series, Dune: The Sisterhood, and a feature film from Legendary (see “‘Lobo’ TV Series; ‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ TV Series; Videos From First New Looney Tunes, Ron Moore Apple Series, and ‘Pennyworth;’ ‘I Am Not OK with This’ Casting”).

I bought a POD copy of Ilya’s design years ago, and of course I have an original Avalon Hill copy, but I will also buy this one as a play copy.

Yep, by the same director who did Sicario and Bladerunner 2049. I’m pretty pumped.

Those tokens are interesting. Was there ever a version of the game with minis, or even "board game pieces" at Twilight Imperium quality levels?

Not that I know of. The versions I played were the original AH release which was strictly cardboard, and then the later AH version with Sting on the cover when the David Lynch film came out in 1984. Again, no minis. And you don't need them; it's just bling.

What I do regret missing out on was the Dune RPG. Only 3000 copies printed, and I did not hear about until a few years after.

Apparently shipping is free?! I just went through the preorder, using GBP, and it came up with Royal Mail £0. Great if true, wouldn’t be surprised to get an email though...
