Blimey, they are off to a running start!

I applaud the full weapon selection and 3 bodies/sprue. While a fan of anachronism, I'm not convinced a few sci-fi bitz can make them look sensible with the puffy dresses and such, would have preferred pirates or conquistador parts and wait for a dedicated sci-fi ogre kit that could make Ogryn, Super Mutants, etc.

Officially this set will be part of our Death Fields AND the Classic Fantasy ranges. Within DF the backstory will be that these are a group of abducted Landsknecht - The Vain - who after some time on the circuit succumbed to flattery and allowed themselves to be genetically modified to be bigger and stronger. Their alien owner of course didn’t explain that they would also become grotesque. They now operate as guns for hire and are lent out to the highest bidders as a supplement to regular teams on the Death Fields circuit.

Does that mean that there won't be a "proper" Death Fields Landsknecht release of sci-fied up Landsknechts with normal human proportions? Because if so, that kind of absolutely sucks, big-time, to the point that I'm considering re-characterizing my stance on the Landsknecht Ogres from "bewildered that they won" to "loathe their very existence".

I find it somewhat doubtful they'll be able to fit all of that onto one sprue.

Or... they become the enemies of the proper eventual Death Fields Landsknechts because of their hubris (and willingness to get genetically modified)?

I have but one request, gas-masked heads a la Grognards, as an option, for i bloody hate painting faces.

I mean, they can always do it the Grognard "1 1/2" sprues way.

Landsknecht Ogre Planning!
Having had a great discussion with Landsknecht Ogre submitter and winner Michael Stockdale, we've settled on an approach for this set that we'd like to share with you.

First, we need to lock down a size and proportion for these boys as they are our first "monster" size. Having looked around yesterday we settled on the excellent Westfalia versions. I have really loved their design aesthetic and their half-men were an inspiration to me when starting Wargames Atlantic. If you haven't seen their work click on this image to go to their site:

So these fellows will come in around 45mm or so. This will be a full frame set aiming for three unique bodies on the frame with four frames in the box for 12 total figures.

The bodies will be armored cuirass with square-toed shoes/boots to emulate the classic Landsknecht look. Slashed style sleeve arms will hold a variety of historical/fantasy weapons including Zweihänders (very big two-handed swords), halberds, a matchlock style hand cannon, large, ornate dueling-style pistols. Spear or double-duty standard pole. We will experiment with some options. Maybe a dagger or mace too. Will need at least one larger shield and some buckler style for the swordsmen. Perhaps some segmented plate armor pieces for the legs. The iconic floppy hats and helmets will be included and Morion helmets as an extra option.

Since this is a Wargames Atlantic set, we can't leave it there though! Alternate arms with heavy autoguns and plasma weapons with shoulder pads on the arms, futuristic helmets and bare heads, and a variety of packs comm units holsters etc to equip the bodies will also be included to sci-fi up these fellows.

For fantasy they are also mercenaries fighting for and against the High Queen - a band of brothers united in their love of fashion and fighting.

We hope you like these ideas for this set. We hope also that we can fit all the ideas we keep coming up with onto the frame! Let us know what you think below!

Sci Fi options to be included.

The Morion Helmet they said they plan to include would combo exceptionally well with a Grognards-style gas mask, i feel.

Wow, some of the historical crowd are selfish pricks. And wanting WW1 Italians, not because they want them, but just for trolling.

Sure, I was voting for things I'd buy (thus my own self interest), but I did not vote just to be the dog in the manger.

These will be 12 for $34.99. GW gut busters are 6 for $48. So price is not bad. They will be around 45mm. Is that about the size of the GW ones? Like all WA minis, no bases included… but I just bought 100 x 50mm round bases and have an equal number of 40mm rounds. Doesn’t sound like they will have a female option. I’m excited…

12 Models for 35 bucks compared to the other Death Fields infantry that are 24 models for the same price makes me hope for lots of bits on each sprue.

Did you forget the part where they're Ogre sized?

But these are large size infantry. So not directly comparable with a human size soldier.

Edit: 12 is kind of what I expecting. Putting them on par with mounted troops price wise. WA had polled what people expected mounted troops to come with number wise, and most said 12 in that poll.

Size wise it fits too, with my mounted Fireforge guys on 50mm rounds too.

Well, if each sprue were the same size as every other Death Fields sprue, and had three bodies on it, like the other Death Fields sprues, there would be no reason for them to include half as many, now would there?

Yes.., because the bodies are twice the size and take up more room on the sprue. Plus while the sprue may be the same size, I doubt it will be the same depth as an ogre is probable 3-4 deeper from belly to back than a human sized mini. So if the boxes are the same size you can’t hold as many ogre sprues as you can human sprues.

Example (not meant to insult your intelligence). If you have a mattress on the floor. You put 3 babies on it. That mattress can hold a bunch of other items with the babies. Take that same mattress and put 3 portly adults on it, not much room for anything else…

Yes.., because the bodies are twice the size and take up more room on the sprue.

And more room on the sprue means less space for everything else and thusly the same amount of plastic per sprue, so i don't see your point.

But eh, regardless of anything, i'm going to buy way too much if they give me a gas mask and Morion Helmet combo.

Oh I see, 8 sprues of 3 Grognards vs 4 sprues of 3 Ogres? Yeah let's hope it's two different sprues, I can't see how you could get the same number of Ogre bits as Human bits otherwise and the weapon list was very ambitious.

Grognards were actually technically a whole 16 sprues, 8 sprues of 3 Grognards and 8 smaller sprues of just alternate heads, which is just, bloody incredible for such a price. If Ogres are going to be, for example, 4 regular sprues of 3 Ogres each and 4 smaller sprues to fit all the alternate heads and some weaponry, i'd be overjoyed.

It happened on Facebook. Some of them walked back their statements when called out, but not all. Then the historical poll went up and the Landsknecht Ogres were announced, and there were salty tears from all corners and genres.

Oops wrong thread.

Uhm.

Well, if nobody wanted the Ogres, how did they win? There must be a better organized kabal of voters somewhere

For the most part, yes.

The background is that aliens are kidnapping groups of people (and probably some aliens) from all over time and space, and then giving them equivalent equipment so they can fight each other in some giant game.

Sets like the cannon Fodder show they are willing to add some factions not based entirely on an Imperial Guard regiment a historical group.

I would expect them to use the larger sprues that they used for the Persians and Irish. Those can fit a lot of bits.

Except, oh wait, those were all sculpted from the ground up, they're not actually victorian models with a headswap and a gun. Same for the existing Death Fields.
