It depends on the mission. usually the player who set up first goes first (or if alternating deployments then the one who finishes deploying first). the other player then has chance to sieze the initative usually on a 6.

The mission will specify how to determine the player who goes first and if deployment has any bearing on who goes first.

Didn't they put out an Errata or FAQ or something changing the way going first was calculated?

They did not ( afaik). The BRB Missions have alternating deployment with whoever finished deploying first decide who went first. Many people disliked this (because of Knights). CA17 missions had alternating deployment with whoever finished deploying first have +1 to a roll off to determine who went first. Many people disliked this (because of Knights). CA18 missions then had a roll off to see who deploys their entire army first, and the player who deploys their whole army first gets to choose who gets the first turn (so the player going second can hide behind terrain, etc). Many people disliked this (because of Knights). So we have three totally different methods of deployment and determining the first turn, with no updates forthcoming as GW want to force you to buy CA18 for balance changes.

No it depends on mission. You play BRB book it's whoever sets up last unit first goes first. CA 17 and it's whoever sets up first gets +1 to roll off. CA 18 and it's roll off who decides deployment zone and loser deployes and goes first. And of course tournaments it's up to tournaments.

It depends on which book the rules are in.
BRB - Alternating deployment, whoever finishes deploying first goes first
CA2017 - Alternating deployment, roll off who goes first. Whoever finishes deploying first gets +1 to the roll
CA2018 - One player deploys all. then the other. The player who deployed first, goes first.
All have stealing the imitative on a roll of 6.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Thank you all for the information. Now it is much more clear to me and makes sense.
All of them are valid depends only on which book is the mission that i am playing.
thank you again

I would advise you to house rule this. In our group, we roll:
roll mission--set up battlefield--roll deployment--roll pick sides--roll who sets up first--roll who gets first turn--roll seize.
Works perfectly fine and keeps everyone on their toes.

The whole idea of the current CA missions is balancing going first by being able to counter the deployment of the person going first.
With your system you are just giving more power to the person going first, which is pretty much the last thing 40k needs.

Agreed. Some of the missions rely on e.g. the advantage of going first being tempered by having to have a unit survive through your opponent’s turn before it can score. You make them pointless without this.
