I finally started an Eldar army and I'm fairly certain this list is going to be horrible. However, I couldn't pass up the chance when I found 30 wraithguard/blades for cheap on ebay.

Brigade Detachment:
1 x Farseer
1 x SpirtSeer

5 x Dire Avengers
5 x Dire Avengers
5 x Dire Avengers

10 x Wraithguard (d-sythe)
10 x Wraithguard (wraithcannon)
10 x Wraithblades (swords)

Basically, the idea is to footslog, quicken, or deepstrike them and use the dire avengers to attempt to capture points. I'm hoping that the wraithguard will be annoyingly hard to remove and will hopefully be able to get in close enough to wreak havoc. I think if I opt to use the Wraithhost specialist detachment to give one unit 4++, i can protect whichever one is most important to keep - which will depend on the opponent's army composition.

My hope is that this list ends up being a bit of a paper-rock-scissor and might end up doing ok against certain lists and terrible against others. However, I also accept the possibility that it will just be a big ol ball of suck. I've never played Eldar before and have actually never played against them either. Assuming this list is absolute fail - is there any way to keep a wraith-heavy footslogger composition and be worthwhile? I thought about getting a bunch of Heavy Support Weapons and playing a defensive battle. Sit back and shoot to force the opponent to move in close through maybe 20 wraithguard instead. Only problem is the D-Cannon which could rid problematic heavies is only range 24.

Well, the problem is that you only have short-range firepower and the army is too slow.
Apart from deep striking, the army cannot combat the enemy at all threat ranges,
which would be important to play at the competitive level.
I’d cut back the Wraithguard to 3x5 men and add some wraith flyers.

Agreed. Or maybe a Serpent or 2 for the WG not dropping in from the Webway (like the D-scythes and Blades)
I'd also swap the Avengers for Rangers with this list. If you have mostly tough units, the DA get an immediately "easy kill" target on their backs. Rangers are at least a bit harder to kill.

And as much as I like the Spiritseer with WG, he gives no bonuses to them over a Warlock in most cases, and a Warlock can combine with the Farseer for the Seer Council Strat.
Remember that Spiritseers are not like Autarch which grant reroll 1s for unit within range of said Autarch, regardless of range to the enemy unit. Spiritseers only give their aura against ENEMY units with 6" of the Spiritseer. So your squishy HQ has to be dangerously close to enemy units for the bonus to work.
IMO, it's not worth it over just taking a Warlock.

I like the concept but as many have stated before you are too slow if i were you i'll put one big unit surrunded by wraithlord.
with the special detachment they are surely stronger

Agreed with the other comments. I'd like the list better with 20 or so wraiths; footslog the 10 blades as your deathstar, using quicken to get them up the board. Reduce both units of guard to 5, sticking the scythes in a serpent and deep striking the wraithcannons. You then have enough points for a second serpent for two of the avenger squads, which they will surely appreciate. With the leftover points I'd swap the 3rd unit of avengers for a unit of rangers, add a warlock so you can make this two detachments (battalion & vanguard), and then maybe stick a 6th scythe wraith in the serpent.

Battalion Detachment:
1 x Farseer w/ Spear (Doom, Fortune)
1 x Warlock Skyrunner (Jynx/Protect)
5x Avengers, Exarch w/ Two Cats
5x Avengers, Exarch w/ Two Cats
5x Rangers
1x Wave Serpent

Vanguard Detachment (Wraith Host)
1x Spirit Seer (quicken/restrain, warlord, faolchu's wing, revered by the dead)
10 x Wraithblades (swords)
5 x Wraithguard (wraithcannon)
6 x Wraithguard (scythes)
1x Wave Serpent

1499 Points, 8 cp

Would make for an interesting list!

Thanks for the opinions. I'm going to try it at least once with all the wraithguard because i think it will be fun even if it's terrible - but I'd like to slowly build it into a worthwhile wraith-heavy list. The suggestions will help me steer in the right direction.

I'd really like to find a way to put wraithlords in there, but they're really not a very powerful unit except as a distraction carnifex. I think it could be a interesting and difficult to deal with list because few people will be likely to stock up on auto-cannon equivalent weapons. It seems everyone goes las or heavy-bolter equivalent.

I endorse this madness!!

Consider that you could drop down to two units.

One of 10 and the other of 6

10 man squad of guard in the webway - DS them in + buff up and give invuln via strat etc.

Squad of 6 Scythes in a serpent. Second serpent containing The spirit seer and some DA's

If you have acess to one I would use a bonesinger as a 3rd elite choice in the the specialist detachment. If you manage to blob up he could be healing your wraiths or serpents as well as dishing out MWs. at 70pts he's a decent elite choice for wraith armies. Alternatively a squad of banshees would be a good one to put in a serpent with the characters.

That being said, I don't think the specialist detachment offers enough to be worth taking over alitoic. Alitoic serpents with vectored engines advancing into enemy lines is very effective.

Keep in mind that the specialist detachment can also be Alaitoc! For me, the 4+ invulnerable save (3+ with protect) on the big unit of blades is a must have for such a heavy points investment. Stack that with -1 to hit from Alaitoc, fortune from the farseer, LFR for another -1 if needed, and they are going to be incredibly hard to deal with. Then advancing up the board with quicken, ideally from the spirit seer w/ faolchu's so he can keep up with them, and the specialist warlord trait to let them reroll charges - also really important. Personally I wouldn't bother with the blades without wraith host.

I understand the desire to fit in wraithlords, just... I think they're terrible. Its just going to be blown off the board before accomplishing anything. If one is really desired I'd make it a wraithseer; what you get for the meager difference in points is just silly.

Wraithlords, lacking invulnerable saves, don't hold up and are inefficient fire power for their points. I faced a 4 WL list (one being ForgeWorld) at a GT. It was a no brainer to take it apart with drukhari (and my opponent was in over his head, too).

Your list is similar to a Castellan/Imp Knight list. It has 2 or 3 heavy, really heavy hitters: 30 wounds, (medium) ~high toughness, decent save, etc. Only, without the range nor speed, and T6 instead of T8. This has I.K. limitations, tougher to score objectives and lacking board control.

The Wraithguard will need Quicken & Protect, so I wonder if bumping up to 2k will help. Another Warlock or two, Rangers instead of DAs (suggested by others, like Galef). And definitely, get any HQs onto bikes. These might be more economical buffs to your list, without hurting your wallet for Wave Serpents. Used jetlocks are maybe $5 to $10?

Do you play ITC or book missions?
Brigade vs Battalion. I think you miss-typed that.
Sword vs. axes - I take it that the ebay purchase already has them assembled? Otherwise, the axes and invluns make for more smack and durability.

Ohh really ??
I dont know why I thought they were tied into Yanden. Maybe becasue all the lists I built involved psytronome

This changes things and makes the specialist deatchemnt a lot more worth while in my eyes. Need to revisit.

The psytronome is indeed really neat. But a big unit of wraithblades can mulch just about anything in combat anyway. Especially with the spiritseer buff, wrath of the dead and/or supreme disdain as needed.

My army is already assembled and nearly painted except for 10 of the Dire Avengers.

I was really torn between wraithblades with axes or swords, but If i went with axes I'd have lost a few bodies. As of now, just the wraiths have 90 total wounds. 124 with the rest of the army.

Overall I figured that the Invulnerable save of the axe version wouldn't be worth the cost as the best counter vs this army would be massed autocannon equivalents and a 4++ Is useless against them, heavy bolters, or massed infantry fire.

It would be good vs blast weapons with high AP, but those have a good chance to be wasted when you consider -1 to hits, overkilling 6s or underkilling 1s and 2s.

Why choose? You can magnatize the blades(shoulder joints) with spare bits from the guard builds to open all sorts of options.

Also, consider that you are paying 1CP for the specialist detachemnt and then 2CP to give the invuln to the blades for one turn. Thts 3 CP just to reap the benfit of a 4 up invulnerably for one turn...
Food for thought.

Good luck to you in the wars to come good sir!
I#m a big fan of wraiths. I need to build/magnatize the 10 I still have sitting on sprues

I decided to make the glued-on choice because about 90% of the hobby for me is modeling. I've got a pretty cool display case
and wouldn't mind having 40 wraithguard/blades if I decided at some point that I needed the axe variant.

If i want to try them out most people won't mind me proxying anyway. Eldar are pretty rare in games around here anyway.

The idea of a legion of wraiths stomping across the battlefield appeals to me greatly.
Love the enthusiasm for wraiths.

Wraith-lords are not that terrible IMO. They are not Vyper bad....
For the points they cost, they are not a half bad distraction carnifex, pretty fun unit. And they are beautiful models! Rule of cool trumps all and I seem to take one in most of my lists lol. If you liek the model get it.
I think the best way to run them is bare bones with glaive of some cannons if have spare points.

I don't know i think a vanilla Wraithlord with just a sword could be viable with the new stratagem could output a flurry of attacks

I assumed he was referring to the spirit-seer stratagem to give them 4++ since people love to blow wraithlords off the table before they can do anything.

Ohh... I thouht there was something that would give the wraithlord a flurry of attacks... As in meaning more than the measily 4 they have

If ++ is the objective I think Iyrvaine in a Ynnari *spits on the ground* spearhead with 3 WLs and a bonesinger seems like a really fun option . Tempted to do that myself but not sure how I feel about investing in buying and painting 2 more WLs just for that lol.
Cant envision spending 2CP to give 1 WL 4++ for one turn.. A knight of a blob of guards/blades seems valid to me though.
