I am looking for a symbol that would match my home-brew chapter. My home-brew chapter is aquatic in nature with potential hints of Maori art and was wondering if you could think of any symbol that I could place on my Space Marine Tidecallers?

Depends on how intricate you want.

You could do a conch shell blowing out a wave.

You could do a tribal wave pattern.

You do a simple circle over a half circle, aka the moon calling the tide.

Use Blood Angels (iconigraphy and transfers), and paint the drop blue, green, or blue-green instead of red.

Paint over Salamander transfers for a Sea Serpent.

Bretonian Knights had a Trident tranfer.

Age of Sigmar has Idoneth Deepkin for Aquatic Themed.

Lizardmen might have something as well.

I'd be most tempted to go raid a Fantasy army for transfers. It's going to be similar scale, still GW, and still a transfer so you don't have to freehand.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Those ideas are pretty good, I’ll just have to see if I can make a stencil/template out of green stuff and then paint where I’ve cut out the green stuff. I’m trying not to go with a trident, as there are already chapters, like the Emperor’s Spears, that use it.

Google GW Transfer Sheet - toss in some Army names and you should find some images of various Transfer sheets to see what you've got.

A Blood Angel blood drop transfer painted a deep blue over a sea green or vice versa armor wouldn't look bad - I'd go Sea Green Armor though as there's already a ton of Deep Blue power armor.

Caledor transfer sheets have (Sea) Serpent/Dragon iconography in Red, and two choices in Green.

Bretonians have a Red Dragon Rampant heraldry - tho Bretonian Herladry transfers are Shield transfers - might be too large.

White Lions of Chrace has a white lion head that might not take too much work to convert into a Sea Lion pun heraldry.

Dreadfleet and Man-o-war are currently out of print, and I don't think they had transfers anyway.

Searching Transfer Sheet on the GW website has a few Adeptus Titanicus sheets, Legio Vulpa has an allied House Hyboras that has a stylized Omega that could easily be an octopus or squid.

you can actually make your own transfer sheets if you have a printer and decal paper.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Have you attempted to paint scales?
you could just put scales at the shoulderpads of your choice.

(i do not guarantee for the loyality of the might not existing alpha legionaires that will inevitably infiltrate your chapter that might or might not exist and or are might or might not drawn to scales.)

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

You can reduce the above image to something mores simple and wave form while keeping its essence.

Using non-GW stuff in your models can interfere with getting your model published on the webpage and/or White Dwarf. If that's your thing. They tend to shy away from anything that could get THEM in IP hot water too.

as they should TBH. It's hard to police that stuff and it'd be easy to sneak in copyrighted stuff, for example, I considered for a time doing a space wolves company with that symbol. if IU submitted a pic and GW published it, they might not realize it was a faction logo from Battletech until lawyers from Topps where knocking on their door.

Thus why I kept suggesting GW transfers from other games/factions. There's probably a disclaimer for freehand - i.e. you agree when you submit the model photo nothing is someone else's IP, and give all rights to GW for publication or whatever - If you copied their current transfer and used a Paint or Photoshop program to change up the colors you may or may not get away with that one.

that said if he's looking for starter advice I doubt he's sending in any examples of painted stuff anytime soon so.. not a big deal. Actually on the subject of images from battletech there's actually an awesome regimental symbol that might be perfect for your space marines

I'd hate to paint my stuff up for several years and then find out I can't ever submit stuff because I used a Battletech transfer as my chapter symbol on everything.
