I was considering switching from cable to something like sling or hulu+live tv and i was wondering if any of you have any recommendations or experiences doing it.

Got rid of cable years ago.

I'd look up if you like the content on Netflix or Hulu, and just pick one of those.

I've found Netflix is better for movies and it's OC, while Hulu has alot more mainstream shows and what not.

I fear you may have missed your chance to do this with every movie studio, tv studio and their respective dogs starting up their own streaming services, it's going to get harder and harder to make a saving doing it

but hopefully somebody in the USA with more experience with what's available over there (and the costs) will be able to chip in and say i'm wrong

I've done it for years. My current place has it free (though I barely watch it), but I haven't paid for TV service since last century. Never bothered with anything beyond free trials of hulu and netflix.
I've never felt the lack.

While the 'just internet' option isn't priced to be friendly, it usually comes out cheaper than a full package. The only annoyance is frequent calls by sales folk who don't grasp why you don't want to pay for garbage.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

Eh, you don't have to subscribe to every single streaming service. You just have to find one that has the content you like and subscribe to it. It's all about how many you choose to subscribe to.

it's when you start adding Netflix+Hulu+Disney+HBO Go that you start to lose out.

I ditched cable years ago.

Right now I just run with Netflix, and leeching off my brother’s itunes family plan when he grabs movies.

I never watched a whole lot of live TV. Watched a few shows with The Ex, but you could get those on Hulu.

Cut the Cable/internet bill in half. It was getting crazy.

Unfortunately my wife is a live tv junky... food network cooking shows, the old shows on logo etc.

I thought hulu plus looked good. Im just wondering how reliable streaming is. I stream movies from my pc sometimes and if they're big i get stuck buffering.

There's nothing worse than that...

I haven't had cable since...2010?

I watch racing with my father on occasion at his place, but personally I only use internet and Netflix/etc. I have a Roku but I don't subscribe to any additional channels. I run my Amazon video library through there, watch YouTube for most sports, etc.

Normal TV is almost entirely gak garbage now.

I am considering signing up for Curiosity Stream which is like the old Discovery Channel but...good.

Havent had cable in about 10 years. Netflix, soon disney +, and the free tv project get me all that i want.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Gave up cable 2004ish. Was pretty bleak there in the beginning but it's great now. Amazon streaming is surprisingly good for being a freebie with Prime. Between that, Netflix and Hulu you're pretty set.
I missed live games for a bit. Then I got over it. About 2-5 times a year there's a game on I really want to watch so I pop over to the local bar and enjoy.
Can't recommend highly enough.

I haven't had cable TV since I moved out of my parents' house. Haven't missed it one bit either. I don't watch much TV since most of what's on is garbage nowadays. I have Netflix to allow me to put something on in the background while I paint and stuff, and I'll probably go ahead and sign up for Disney Plus when it launches, depending on how much it costs (I really want to see The Mandalorian).

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Ditched cable. I have several Roku channels as well as everything tied to Amazon Prime followed by a splash of Netflix and Vudu, so I'm pretty set.

I got rid of satellite when I moved to my current place.

Not only is it cheaper for me to have multiple streaming services, but the dense foliage out the back blocked the satellite signal.

Pretty much only use Tubi and Youtube.

However, I rarely watch anything on TV.

For live TV I go out to the bar/pub.

What do you use to stream them? I have a (now) really old, not great, wireless G router and it still handles 1080p content through Plex just fine.

I dumped cable a while ago. Basic has nothing but garbage, getting the channels I might - MIGHT! - want to watch was expensive, Hulu and Netflix and a couple other channels COMBINED costs less than basic cable by a factor of five.

And actually had stuff I wanted to watch to boot...

Oh, ok, yeah, USB is not ideal, when you add in the latency you are probably getting from the other sources. My computer is Frankenstein's monster, but it does pretty well for Plex, but I don't bother with stuff over 1080p. Most is just 720p, which looks good enough, since I'm not going to sit and ABX the difference. There are options you can enable on the server side of Plex to limit the bitrate and likely make it work better, if replacing that adapter isn't an option.

For us, Plex, NetFlix, Amazon Prime and SlingTV give us more than enough to watch. Plus almost everything our kids actually watch is just YouTube.

Hulu is far far superior to Netflix. The latter has steadily gotten rid of worthwhile content, on top of getting more and more expensive. Hulu actually cares to have mainstream shows, while also having add-on options like HBO available for reasonable prices.

Netflix is honestly a joke at this point. And IMO their original content is garbage, and even if someone did like it would not be worth the price tag.

I would love to get rid of cable but unfortunately my fiance needs it to survive. She will never give up her DVR. We get Netflix free through our cable provider though. Been thinking of trying Hulu. We have all of the premium movie channels through cable, but I watch them on my TV's apps because they look so much better.

Yup, gave it up several years ago and dont miss it. We do YouTube Netflix and hulu. Though we drop Netflix from time to time because they have draughts of nothing to watch so why pay for it.

We do the same thing but with hulu rather than netflix. Drop it until there are three or 4 shows we want to watch. pay for a couple months and catch up.

Huh. A better question might be "does anyone still have cable"?

Cable is such a scam, a business model that's decades out of date...

OK, I'm an old. What can I say? But cable has *never* been a good deal or a good way to watch videos. I don't think I've watched a commercial in 30 years.

Get yourself netflix. Or Hulu. Or splurge and get them both. If money is an issue, you can try the various free trials for a while, figure out which one looks the most interesting.

Maybe take a look at Amazon Prime. HBO if you haven't seen Game of Thrones. But it's really Netflix and Hulu these days. If you're a Star Wars person, you'll soon have to figure out if you want to pay Disney for the privilege too.

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

Also when it comes to "regular" tv, if you want your basic local channels all you should need is a HD antenna. One of our spare bedrooms doesn't have a cable tv outlet and we didn't want to pay to add one for a guest room that's barely used. So we got an HD antenna and I was pretty surprised at how clear the picture was.. better than cable. There were also lots of other channels I never knew existed. I'm hoping we can cut the cord soon, been talking about it, but it might be a tough transition for us. Us meaning my fiance, and me getting complained to.

Disney's streaming service is probably also going to be extremely worthwhile. Simply because how much content you'll get with it.

I've not had TV with channels since I moved out. So some 7-8 years of just streaming.

I'm still weirded out by coworkers who buy Dvds or use those Red Bin movie rentals

On moon miranda.

I haven't had cable in years, and any place I've lived as an adult that had it came with it (e.g. dorms).

Between the great stuff available on YouTube, various streaming sites like Netflix, and Bittorrent, etc, as well as Adblock plugins, I cannot fathom what cable offers. 99% of the content on cable is garbage, and it's all got ads that both feel like someone taking a dump directly into my skull and are never for something I'm really the target demographic for in the first place.

Hulu's inclusion of ads is why I wont use their service either.

Hulu has ads? Isn't there a membership fee? Or is it like it's free with ads, but no ads if you pay?
