I recently purchased a box of Thousand Sons Space Marines to display alongside my Magnus the Red. A fellow hobbyist at the store claimed that the Thousand Sons loyal to Magnus still wear red instead of blue. The ones who wear blue are loyal to Ahriman according to him. I have never seen GW art or lore for this and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I have their codex and will search there but hopefully someone here already knows. I'd like for his retinue to be painted in the right scheme and it'd be silly for them to be from the opposing faction. Looking at the art at least, Magnus fighting Guilliman seems to be doing so alongside the normal colored (blue) Thousand Sons. Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

I'm fairly sure Magnus' powers probably overpower that of Ahriman, so regardless of the colour they're going to be loyal to him. This is rubric marines I'm talking about. Regular ts sorcerers could still wear red to show loyalty to magnus I guess?

I'll have to dig out my Codex again, but I think he's referring to a group listed in there as the "Sons of Magnus", which have a red and gold color scheme.

The "Sons of Magnus" are a generic name for all Thousand Sons marines. You're thinking of the Crimson Sons:

In the wake of the Rubric of Ahriman, the Crimson Sons were exiled from the Planet of the Sorcerers, and have wrought mayhem in isolation from the main body of the Thousand Sons ever since. Like so many sects in the Cult of Duplicity, how their actions ultimately serve the will of Magnus is unknown to all but the Crimson King.

defeat. It would seem that stupidity is as eternal as war.'

The codex pictures have blue Thousand Sons standing right next to Magnus. I loved the new Thousand Sons models when I saw them and immediately bought a bunch to make an army but part of me wishes I'd used HH plastics to make a red/gold army immediately after they fled to the warp when the Wolves arrived.

Fellow hobbyists say a lot of things, I've heard plenty of stuff that's flat out wrong as I have pretty decent memory for the fluff. You're not only welcome but encouraged to paint your Thousand Sons any way you'd like and if you believe a sect continues to wear red armor then you're welcome to create that sect.
