Preparing the Invasion of Terra

I originally went for Emperor's Children out of necessity for an Isstvan 3 campaign that eventually never happened. I then went for Iron Warriors as they had been my first CSM army and I had a bunch of bitz from various CSM and AoS projects I could use to spruce up my units. If you took away the layer of Leadbelcher at least half my army would be purple.

For me, it's always been about the feel of the Legion, do they do something I find interesting and unique. Can I get into their mindset and think like them when playing a game. So for me it's mostly Lore wise and I have a few:

1. The Thousand Sons: My OG favorite Legion and still one of my top picks. I liked them because they seemed much less like the super soldiers their cousins in the other legions were. They had a vision for the future an idea of what would come after the Great Crusade. To me it felt like most other legions followed the Emperor just because, whereas it felt like the Thousand Sons really believed in the future he was trying to create. Which in the end makes their fall all the more tragic. (Also shout out to their allies in the Legio Xestobiax for Titan Legions).

2. The Salamanders: I've always had a bit of a soft spot for heroic last stands and if there is one Legion that exemplified that for much of the Great Crusade, it was the Salamanders. Vulcan did eventually kick the thirst for that kind of death out of them, but it's still a part of who they are. Also, much like the Thousand Sons, they actually give a gak about the standard human and wanted to build a better future.

3. The Alpha Legion: I'm a big fan of the alternative warfare the Alpha Legion brings to the table. Where nearly every other Legion is some form of hammer, the Alpha Legion is the scalpel. It's also good to see a Legion practical enough to not get hung up on "Kill the Xeons!" and would actually work with them when it was advantageous. The bit with the Cabal was kinda meh, but I thought the split between Alpharious and Omegon was interesting.

4. The White Scars: Last of my favorite Legions, I really didn't care for the white scars pre HH. They were just marines on bikes. Then I read their books and they were just so well written and fleshed out. The Khan now stands as my favorite Primarch and (I know I'm gunna spell this wrong but) Targutai Isugai as one of my favorite characters. Their insistence on individualism, freedom, and expression in a galaxy that dives zero gaks about that kind of things is a welcome change of pace and a good source for conflict.

Nearly all the other Legions fall somewhere in the middle for me, they are interesting, but not overly special IMHO. That being said, there is a single Legion that I just straight up despise.

The Space Wolves: Oh boy, these guys. It's not because I'm a bit TS fan, or rather, it's not only that. I can't stand hypocrisy, and the Space Wolves are drowning in it. They condemn all the other psykers while keeping their own, but since they are "Rune Priests" it's totally different and legit. They pretend to be building bridges with the other Legions (particularly the aforementioned Thousand Sons) when they are really just gathering intel to put their trusted cousins to the torch. Russ is so close minded and sees the universe in such black and white terms it drives me nuts. Okay, rant over. XD

So yeah, for me it's about the lore first and playability second.

Mechanicum, I have always loved the ad mech in 40k but was so disappointed in the 40k models.

The FW models are just amazing and drew me in. The vehicles and the automata are just beautiful. They remind me of the old conversion work people used to do pre fw range.

Like, I've only got one mini so far, but...

...The Emperor's Children. It was a tricky decision, though. There are so many pretty 30k minis, and there's so much to enjoy with so many of the legions.
But a big factor was looking at my 40k Marines.
I love the Black Templars. There's a fantastic duality to them - in many ways, they're extremely pure - they are fanatically faithful, which manifests in the way they fight, the way they organize themselves, the way they interact with each other, and the way they crusade across the galaxy. The emphasis on training neophytes has an almost tender homo-social element to it, as brother guides brother from conflict to conflict, imparting wisdom along the way. They crusade because it's what they've always done - a throwback to before the heresy, despite the very clear fact that the era of the Great Crusade is LONG lost now. Their way of engaging the enemy is mad, in the 41st millennium, bringing hordes of power armor to bear in melee, often by foot.
And yet all of this is underscored by how brutal they are. Almost Khornate, they exult in being able to hack their foes apart in melee. The enlightenment of the Great Crusade has atrophied to wild superstition, and putting the value of ancient treasures and mere revenge over the value of human life, which, ironically as defenders of humanity, the Templars, in their fanaticism, place very little value upon at all. For all the mourning and ceremony of a brother being seconded to the deathwatch, a Templar thinks very little of putting entire Hives to the torch at the merest suspicion that heresy might've taken root. Their conduct is as much a product of their effective exile from the wider imperium under Sigismund after the heresy as it is their devotion to the imperium. (that ended up longer than I planned lol).

As such, I decided a repeat of fanatics was out - sorry Word Bearers! (cries in loving the Gal Vorbak minis)

I also figured that I wanted to go traitor.
Most Loyalists, bar maybe the Wolves (who are still a melee chapter, so too close to the templars) are pretty much unchanged from their 40k iteration imo, which puts me off a bit, save for the Iron Hands (IDK why everyone keeps saying their forgotten, they're one of the cooler chapters and the minis are easily among the most pretty 30k sculpts) and the White Scars (I have plans for those minis... plans I probably won't ever act upon, but plans...)

Of the traitors, while I LOVE the Night Lords, I feel like their melee-focus is just a little too close to the templars, I found the Emperor's children the most interesting. Helped that I was raised Roman Catholic and that purple screams Ave Imperium to me. (Before I went with the templars, way back when, I had toyed with going with a scheme that, unknown to me at the time, was effectively just the Emperor's Children)
Not only is there a ton of converting potential, as each marine seeks out his own, twisted perfection, but I liked the flaw in their arrogance. For all of their vanity, for all of their glory, each marine is troubled deeply by his own inadequacy. There's a very greco-roman tragic nuance to their vanity, and also the inevitability of their unstable geneseed mutating them that just presses all of my Warhammer buttons. I tried to fluff this out with my Praetor, as he's masked, covering his deformed face.
But as a legion, I feel like it give a really nice scope to model each marine as an individual, and really immerse myself in their stories. While most of the heresy is circumscribed, I think there's plenty of space in the size of the legions and the wider crusade to have a lot of creative freedom. I like a lot of the 40k bits for them, too, and would love to work that in.
A while back, I found a *ahem* source for the old Raptors backpacks, the ones with the big dual intake jet engines, and an odd little seed germinated in my empty head. I decided that I wanted to make my legion jump-pack based, and suddenly an extra narrative layer formed over the Emperor's Children for me.
Being obsessive over the art of war,the notion that a part of the legion would be proudly dedicated to rapid insertion, deploying and re-deploying from various altitudes, attacking with blistering speed, encircling and eliminating targets with merciless efficiency just felt RIGHT. The jump packs also gave me this sense of them being marines in a more antiquated sense. They would be used to ship-to-ship-boarding in space, braving the maelstrom of void-borne warfare and all of its risks. Among them would be the warped destroyers (planning on some conversions using the Kakophinii for this ), relegated to, or indeed, volunteering out shame for the grizzliest of battlefield duties after their gene flaws manifested too much, leaving them outcast amongst such a vain legion.

I want to start Space Wolves but...I just don't have the time, nor the $$$ for another game system or army.

Now, several Legions attract me, namely the World Eater's and Blood Angels, but I really like how the Space Wolves in 30k wear their Norse aesthetic more so then the werid, borderline fursona fixation on Wolves they have in 40k. They also more or less are a fast moving, melee force. The German Army grey looks better then the baby blue by a long strech, while I couldn't make their arguments for psykers in good faith. The idea of basically being a force of destruction and death that only answers to one authority, Big E himself.

I'm less than halfway through the 2nd Horus Heresy novel, so I have much to understand. Being focused on the Sons of Horus I have opted to do them first. I love their color scheme as well, and more importantly, I found a tutorial online that is quite easy to follow. They should come out looking wonderful.

I also appreciate and am in love with Thousand Sons lore. Defiant practitioners of arcane rites is so appealing to this chaos-loving player. But I just am not seeing a color scheme tutorial that looks feasible and good. I do not have nor plan on buying an airbrush.

As I continue to read these amazing novels, I fear I will want to play every army!

@OP:

HH 2.0 convinced me to participate because of the reaction system. I have played 40K the last twenty years with AA so anything which isn´t IGYG piques my interest.

Having not much time on my hands nowadays means a simple paint scheme is required to paint up all the minis in the box. Therefore I chose the Iron Hands which will be drybrushed for a metallic black paint scheme in a jiffy. However they would look rather drab with just that so they will all come along with OSL effects on eye lenses and vehicle lamps/lights. In addition to that I intend for the first time in my hobby to use pigment powders for weathering as a contrast to my whole mini collection which has been painted in a tidy GW style. To sum it all up from a painting perspective it is a project to use additional techniques (OSL & Weathering) along the classic drybrushing and edge highlighting.

And now to actual gameplay. I have started in 2nd 40K with Night Lords because of their striking paint scheme. How they played was a secondary aspect to me. Over the years I have collected two further power armour forces (SM & CSM) and both had one thing in common: Tough infantry. Judging from that I have a tendency to field models who rather stick around longer in comparison to ones who act more as glass cannons. I guess this behaviour stems from the Age of Wonders video game series in which you had to make sure that your experienced units don´t die as then you will be forced to continue the game with noob units.
So apart from being easy to paint the Iron Hands qualify obviously as hardy troops. From an aesthetic point of view it is also nice to field unique cyborg marines. Also this time around I will field in an army with more walkers and vehicles than ever before as I was back in the day too lazy to paint up a lot of those units.

I picked the overlooked White Scars. I’ve always been fascinated by Ghenghis Khan and the Mongol conquests and have read several books on the topic. (Unfortunately, relatively little is recorded about the real Khan, as well as his 30k adaptation).

Some of the other reasons:
Deployment and movement are my favorite parts about the 40k/30k game. That’s where the tactics come in. Shooting and close combat is just target selection and dice rolling. So I love the units that shine in their deployment options and mobility. I’m not saying it’s the most effective or powerful in game terms, but for me, it’s the most fun.

And I enjoy their flavor. Tribal loyalty. Calmness. Respect. Enjoyment of combat (unlike some of the more dour Legions). Happy to do their part without seeking any glory or favor.

And of course, a unique aesthetic. As the only obviously Asian-inspired Legion, they get access to half the world’s major cultures for decoration, weapons, armor, etc. where many Legions share European aesthetics. It can be a bit odd to have samurai and Mongol themes in the same force but they are both awesome so I’ll overlook for the rule of cool.

It´s very hard in 30K/40K to outmaneuver an opponent as the table is often too small. So it boils down to using drop pods and outflanking via USR as a solution to the problem. Hope you play on a large table.

Yep. Hazard stripes are a pain in the ass. In the early 90s I painted Blood Bowl minis with striped trousers as a noob. This experience put me off to ever try painting such stuff again.

I have played dark angels since 3rd edition 40k. I vowed to never play them in 30k. Their scheme, models, and playstyle is refreshing and fluffier than their 40k versions. I found myself playing dark angels in 30k, and they seem like a different army to me (painting is different too).

I've always loved alpha legion in 40k, but also play sons of horus. Both legions chosen for rule of cool (rules, fluff, looks).

Black loyalist and two teal traitor legions for me.

Now I have to find a nice loyalist legion to complement the angels... maybe imperial fists?

Personally I'm drawn to all of the traitor legions for one reason or another(Except Word Bearers/Lorgar. Feth them). They're just so much more interesting than loyalists in my mind. My first love will always be World Eaters. I always enjoyed the 'unstoppable madman' types. Angron, despite all of the haters, is a sad story of a primarch who was never allowed to reach his potential. The Emperor could have saved his friends and refused, despite elevating other Primarch's non astartes family/friends. The Emperor could have removed the Butcher's Nails and saved him from constant agony, but it would've made Angron useless so he didn't.The Imperium didn't even punish the ruling class of the world he grew up on. I also have always had a thing for Greek/Roman mythology, and at the time of initially reading up on the traitor primarchs I was also watching Spartacus: Blood and Sand. From a painting aspect, heresy era World Eaters take weathering and gore effects incredibly well, and look phenomenal with little effort.

Personally I originally leaned towards the Fists because I have a strange love for yellow on minis (despite not being a fan of it as a color in my regular life) and I liked a lot about them. And then I read the Night Lords Omnibus in around 4 days. Around a full time job.

So now I'm doing Night Lords with a mix of MkVI and MkIV and giving them the crimson hand marking to show their loyalty to Curze and Sevatar. And I plan on double dipping them into 40k proper since they're one of the few legions who don't look excessively corrupted (and mixing in more corrupted brethren from modern kits would be on brand so they have someone to look down on as is proper for them).

Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

Brussels, Belgium

Right now I have all traitors for a couple of reasons.

1- Chaos has always been my jam in 40k. Amongst the first things I bought in the 90's were deamonettes and the original Realms of Chaos book.

2- Amongst all the stories of primarchs and legions those that resonated with something in me were Lorgar's quest for truth, no matter what that truth was, and Alpharius's gambit with the Cabal to not destroy everything by siding with Horus... So, my two main legions are XX and XVII.

3- Amongst the other legions, I had models in my chaos space marine collection that could be used to build allied detatchements or Alpha Legion 'rewards of treason' units, so I have a small force of XII legion built with chaos terminators and berserkers, with the old metal Kharn as commanding officer, and a small force of III legion with noise marines as stand-ins for kakophoni. I also have gotten my hands on the original doom rider model, so bikers too...

4- As a Alpha Legion player, I find hilarious the idea of playing units in Imperial Fists livery (I know, I'm easily entertained), so I have a VII legion force at the ready if need be.

5- I have no love for the XIII, but I have a lot of 40k space marines that were donated to me or that I got when buying collections from others. I'll cobble together a playable force in innacurate armor but accurate colors, with Marneus Calgar in terminator armor as a stand-in for a Preator so I have a force to play against if a friend comes over without an army...

So XX and XVII as main because Lorgar and Alpharius are my boys, III and XII for chaos, and VII and XIII for the lulz...

I already had a small spread of forge world units for my iron warriors so I’m excited to get to use them again.I’m using my MK III and IV stuff, with the spartan, and what I had to flesh them out. I think I jumped on the Iron Warriors back when Storm of Iron came out. The scene where they offer the only surrender option before any digging begins just slapped. Plus the hazard stripes are a look. It’s also a great army for all the armor I’ve piled up.

With the new MK VI stuff I’m going to build an ultramarines force. I already like the legion because of their focus on logistics and war fighting instead of insert specialty. I also really enjoyed the Horus heresy book that describes the Iron Warriors trying to hold back the Ultramarines on the way to relieve Terra. The Iron Warriors are so low on bolt rounds they can only shoot at space marines. Their equipment is failing and you can feel the logistical strains, especially against the legion that has a mini empire to support it.

Overall I think it gives me two forces that have an easy excuse to face each other. Ascetically also the Ultramarines will have clean and new MK VI to show that they’ve been able to refit and resupply while the Iron Warriors will be more dingy and with older marks to show the strains from the heresy.

It’s in the opening of Slaves to Darkness I believe. Parts of the book were bland but the desperate rearguard to hold of the Ultramarines seems like a cool theatre to focus on. I honestly wish the book had been just that.
