Subject: AoS Seraphon Stegadon as "counts as" Centaur Carrier?
|

Hello everybody,
I'm working on an IG regiment including african tribal elements and plan on including some animal models as "counts as" Vehicles. I bougt an armored War Elephant that was intended as Centaur Carrier to drive arround my Company Commander and his Command Squad in style, but he is just to small and will be a Sentinel instead.
Now I stumbled over the Stegadon from Age of Sigmar:
https://www.games-workshop.com/de-DE/Seraphon-Stegadon
and found his dimensions as being about 6” long, 1.75” wide, and 2” tall
It looks more as if it could fit as Centaur
(as a reminder, this thing here:
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Centaur)
which seems to be around 4.4'' long and 2.8'' wide and somewhat above 3'' tall
My questions are:
1. Are there official rules regarding how much of size difference is OK for replacement vehicles? Or if not: would you personally be OK with a replacement being almost 50% longer?
2. Can anybody who has the model tell me if the platform on its back is large enough to place 5 x 25mm round infantry bases on top?
3. Can it stand stabile without a base/with a significantly smaller base (as the official120 x 92 mm base would be quite a stretch for a centaur)?

I'd guess five 25mm bases is going to be pretty darn tight on the howdah of a Stegadon, if they fit at all. You might be able to compensate for that by leaving off some or all of the 'side' or 'back' bits so the bases can overlap off the howdah.
OR, you could magnetize the feet of the crew, so they can be removed from the bases and stuck onto the howdah without them.

Centaurs are small - I suspect the Stegadon would be too large (but if it fits your theme, go for it!)

Stegadons seem better sized for Chimera stand-ins.
If you really want to run Centaurs on a budget (and in plastic), look at the Achilles Ridgerunner. Not a creature, but you can dune buggy the hell out of it pretty readily.

I really like the idea. You could even use a smaller base to fit the centaur's size more.
Generally, it's only a problem if you take a big unit and make it smaller (so you can hide it behind stuff, modeling for advantage, etc)
I don't think anyone would ever mind if you made a unit a little bit bigger. Great plan, can't wait to see pictures.

@ Vulcan: the models in question are metal and already based, but the idea to magnetize them is great and would be worth it to rebase them. I never tried removing bases before, but I guess it should not be to difficult. I would prefer to keep the sides of the Howda, but I guess if the magnets are strong enough the models should have a solid hold on there.
@ Sterling: I already considered the Ridgerunner, but more as a "counts as" Tauros Venator as I like those but they seem hard to get.
Even if the Stegadon fits a Chimera better size wise, I find it hard to see him carry 12 guys + driver and sporting W11 T7. The Centaurs W7 T6 and 5 man capacity matches better.
@ ph34r: OK, so if larger size is less of a problem, I will try it. I will gladly share pictures, but it will be a while until I get around it. I would guess somewhere in the middle of 2020. Wish me luck

I did something similar, magnetizing the feet of a character who could either ride a chariot or go infantry. It works quite well, takes up way less space in the chariot, and looks heaps better that way.
Sadly, taking a mini off an existing base is pretty much guaranteed to wreck the base, and even if you salvage the base you will wreck the work you put into the basing so you'll need to make new bases for them.

That's no terrible loss in that case. They only have simple desert sand + a couple of bushes bases.

I still have a lot of other projects I want to finish first, but I have not forgotten this little project. Yet the more I look at the Stegadon the less I like the actual beast. The howda on its back is awesome and exactly what I intend, but the head looks stupid. On the other hand I quite like the Bastiladon, but here the thingy on its back is not what I want. Can anybody tell me if it would be possible to fix the Stagdon howda on a Bastillodon Body if *SOMEONE* would be stupid enough to buy both? Or stalks Ebay for cheap pieces and leftovers to make this happen?
