The Tau have a fairly short natural lifespan, yet you've got sharacters like Shadowsun and Farsight who are still around even after the 8th Edition time-skip.
So I'm assuming the Tau have life extension technology for some of their people, just like the Imperium? Or maybe some kind of suspended animation, or time dilation effects from near-lightspeed travel?

It's suspended animation for the most part. There's also things like the Puretide Engram, which is basically an AI patterned off of their brain.

Well, Farsight is because of the Totally Not Chaos Sword he has, right? And the rest, same as non-Astartes Imperial characters is because its hard to keep updating names and models when a race's population don't live for thousands of years.
Though their tech focus could excuse implanted memory or personality engrams akin to the Eldar Phoenix Lords and Exarchs Spirit Stone possession idea.

Not really. Everyone important spends their time not running wars in cryostasis except for Farsight who has a magic sword.
