How do?

As you may know (or are about to find out), I’ve been around a loooooong time. Like, cut my teeth on Heroquest back in 1989 long.

During that era, banners were the thing.

Adeptus Titanicus? Kill Banners for weapons. Hull markings. Banners hung twixt the legs proclaiming the engine’s campaigns.

Even in 2nd Ed, most Squad Leaders had a back banner proclaiming much the same, especially Space Marines. Even Orks had Mob glyph plates, and Boss Poles.

I really, genuinely miss those days. A proper banner is a declaration of ‘oh mate, you’re toast’ to the wider galaxy. It was a procomlation of pedigree and intent.

Now? Not even Dreadnoughts have them. And I for one count that as a massive shame.

How do you feel, Dakka?

I like banners, but not so much the old paper banners. I feel that the paper and plastic do not mix very well, and the paper looks out of place.

However, I have a fair few models with plastic banners. The Knight has a nice crotch banner, which can be covered in heraldry. I have a metal regimental standard for my army, and my tank commanders and Shadowsword have banners trailing in the wind. Mostly just the various plastic guard banners, from the Guard/Scion command squads.

They make nice painting challenges, and putting different colours and fringes to denote companies is nice.

My models have banners, Draigo and the termintors. I wish they didn't have them to be honest, banners give them nothing, while make them easier to kill at range.

I really dislike the old paper banners, good riddance in my opinion! Looked totally out of place on miniatures.

Modelled ones now are cool.

Transfers work really well on banners, as they are usually quite flat. I know I built up some interesting heraldry on my knight with transfers.

There are still many factions and units that has them. Custodes has a large one, SoB has them, Tac marines still comes with em, DE almost every kit comes with them (for sure all the vehicles). Its just they are easily to break off and not very viable for use so most players don't use them unless there are rules for them like Custodes/Sisters.

I like the banner look, and my plan is to go back through my army once I finish a few more squads and make optional banners in the classic format of Sergeant and Squad Leader heraldry. Dreads too.

I'd like to do the same for Aspect Warriors too, if I ever get around to them. I love that samurai style banner in the 2nd ed codex.

Daemons still have their banners; bloodletters can use blood banners to turn large and/or enemy units into red goo. There's Kairos' Staff of Tomorrow and the scrivener's list which is held in a manner like he's saying 'This is how many diseases you'll have once I'm through with you!'.

I still pop in the odd banner where I can. I agree though that paper banners are probably best left in the 90s were they belong. And I can make that claim as my armies were started in the 90s, hence I still paint the "retro" bases with goblin green and flock.

I highly dislike back banners, they always get in the way for storage and most else. I just glued the topper on the backpack instead to give the Sgts a more ornate look without doubling their height

I've always liked the use of banners in the old school style - gamewise it's as easy as saying "okay, how about banners don't count for line of sight", and you're done.

I started roughly when you did Mad Doc, and I also like banners.
I also agree with the comments about paper vs molded (I have the GS skill to make my own molded banners...because it is very easy.)

In this edition, it really comes down to the amount of interest a player has in painting vs game mechanics, as noted in other comments about the LOS rules.
I like the individuality it gives a model. Banners say "Here's who I am, what I've done, why I matter." And of course, like a guy with the pointing finger...it says don't mess (or kill me first)

That said, my army lives on banners.

Huh?

We have lots of battle standards. Now like every squad can have a stick?

I don't mind the flag-held-in-the-hand, one per army is good, but I dislike both the back banners and army festooned with sticks.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Hell yeah. All my old Ultramarines have the Sergeant, Squad Leader, Chaplain and Librarian back banners, and one of my dreads has the paper banner, too. My Legion of the damned has the same thing, but with crucified plastic skeletons from the waist up. Even on the Standard Bearer, but that's an entire skeleton.

Someone should add some of the Rogue Trader and 2nd edition pics of Eldar where every single studio model had a back banner, even guardians.

So take them off.

Or have a rational discussion with those you play with about LoS....

Paper banners from the photocopy-able pages in the old Codex etc for any mob boss / character in my Orks. Not to mention the odd dread. They are on plastic rod, slotting into a plastic tube mounted on the base. Any shenanigans vis LOS and I just remove them.

I take the point about the paper banners being ‘flimsy’, though. Wonder if plastic card softened with a heat gun would prove suitable?

I still use a lot of banners in all games I play, I wonder if it is more specific to army choice.

Also for paper banners, I use thin cardboard and clear nail polish. Some printers can still get the cardboard though as well.

Since I mix my Intercessors with the old Black Templar conversion kit, it came naturally to me to put the banner and the icon on my sarges.

I thought GW made a really good decision when they added sculpted back banners to Marine kits back in the day. I made my 5th ed Ultramarines army mostly out of spare snapfit models and did my best to keep it simple to get the army painted, but I couldn't refrain from adding banners as the Codex Astartes demands.

I think Primaris are much improved by giving them a bit of bling back, too. Space Marines have a long history and I don't like how some of it has been discarded with the Primaris releases.

Also, GW should have given Terminators a banner option. Totally not being selfish by demanding that.

I like banners. When I started in 2nd ed it helped give armies a presence I'm not really seeing anymore in modern armies. Might have just been in conjunction with the more lively color palette used back then, of course.

I love me some banners, I'm from roughly the same generation as MDG so I know exactly what he's getting at. For me, Chaos is the king of doing banners. Just the imagery of it, which is captured perfectly in the EoT codex cover of the unending horde wit their banners silhouetted in the distance.

Here's all of my custom Chaos ones (with some AoS ones thrown in too, because why not?) for my various Nurgle forces.

Okay, those last two are musicians, but they're still on their backs!
