Yesterday, the video Unsubtle Allegory starring the Adeptus Astartes and Underhive Scum was uploaded on Youtube, dealing with themes of Blanchitsu, crazy creativity and unpainted miniatures. The bizarre Underhive Scum may strike a chord with many converters around here.

For those around here who may not be familiar with the long-running Warhammer 40'000 parody series If The Emperor Had A Text To Speech Device) (TTS): It is a silly parody heavy on profanities, which is nevertheless far too well crafted to be a mere parody, given the lowly standards of parodies overall. It is produced by a bunch of people who used to by known for their gutter-quality dumb jokes, which usually involved stupidities twisted from Dawn of War, but who have evolved their skills into providing genuinely good storytelling, depth, voice acting and music for the beloved TTS series. TTS is a testament to how positively collaborative the Warhammer community can be, and so often is.

I suspect that the dark comedy of 40k, with the bonkers setting being its own parody from the very start, may have something to do with why TTS is of such unsuspecting high quality. In fact the silly videos of TTS and the serious lore videos by Luetin09 (both at the top of their game, gems of 40k on Youtube) have been responsible for pulling quite a number of new people into the hobby. They sure are good portals into 40k. Check both out if you haven't seen them before, and if you have any interest whatsoever in the grim darkness of the far future.

You really think someone has entered the Hobby after having randomly discovered tts on YouTube and watched it and not the opposite ?

I don't care for TTS and I don't see how it could attract people to 40k. Not saying it can't but I didn't get into 40k or magic from watching a parody of it, same goes for anything else I have interest in. I'd say Mini wargaming has done a significantly better job of turning people to 40k

That being said I'll probably check out Luetin09

This is not a discussion of something doing more than anything else to pull people in to 40k. There is no dispute that the miniature wargame is the giant crowdpuller. That is obvious.

Peripheral niche entryways have always existed, be it novels, magazines, video games or something else entirely. This is one of them, a recent one at that.

We are here talking about outliers. Not everyone moves like the herd does.

Multiple people have stated TTS to be the reason they are in the hobby. Takes all kinds to fill a world. I am not inclined to doubt every word of others without reason.

Do note that said people who found 40k via TTS did so because some friend recommended the series to them. I have never seen it described as a random accident. People have friends. There is almost always a reasonable context to things, one should not assume the opposite.

Also, compare with people who found the hobby via Dawn of War and other PC games. They are not many, but they exist. One of my mates are in that category (three, if you count the two inactive ones).

Luetin09's content is gold.

I find that hard to imagine. Maybe it's the language barrier, but despite reading lots of lore and usually having no problem with understanding English I... Really don't get tts. I started to watch some of the episodes but didn't end one because it didn't appeal to me, I didn't get the jokes since most of them seem only understandable for Hardcore Imperium Nerds. So, I wouldn't know how that series could drive somebody to start 40K, if you're not into 40K already you don't unterstand what the whole thing is about, no?
Would be like getting into Star Trek because of Galaxy Quest.

TTS is a blight on this hobby and the damage it has done to the fluff with people taking it seriously is far greater than any people it may have brought in, who will also take what it has said as gospel.

1. It's not funny.
2. It's impossible to have lore discussion with some people is impossible because they get all their info from it.

That's not what Slayer and Grimtuff were saying at all.

Their issue with TTS (one I share) is the same issue I have with the Regimental Standard. These are comedic/satiric pieces designed to amuse, but there are a certain subset of people who take it seriously and act as those the two are legit sources of 40k Lore.

There's a recent Regimental Standard that mentions the limited vocabulary that Guardsmen are allowed to know and how they can learn more words as a "reward". There will be people who genuinely think that this is how the Guard works - even the very words Guardsmen use are curtailed by the Imperium. With TTS its even worse, as TTS isn't made by GW.

Whether you find TTS funny or not isn't an issue - I don't, except those three Custodes who I find hilarious - but there are people out there who genuinely think that 40K and TTS are the same, and that TTS (and the Regimental Standard) represents 40K in a true fashion.

That's the problem.

I can understand being frustrated at someone who doesn't get the lore, and has a bunch of wrong notions about it.

But ultimately, it's a game for people to have fun. If they have fun with TTS, then let them-if it bothers you to deal with them, then don't interact with them.

^ What JNA said. Who really cares if these people think these satirical pieces are "true"? They aren't hurting you or anyone else by believing so. It'd be like getting mad because some people use the "get money when you land on Free Parking" thing in Monopoly. Just don't play or interact with them. The whole "TTS is a blight on the hobby" mentality is just another form of gatekeeping.

This video was amusing to me. simply because before i even watched it i had a similar perspective on the astartes, even in jest.

of course, with all the ways to like elements of this setting, im always liking something someone finds as wrong. a shocker that one.

I wonder if the folk who consider this a blight also like the perched models that are all the rage these days.

Though, bringing up the regimental standard- wouldn't that be worse than TTS in the context of keeping the setting consistent, since that IS promoted by GW directly, while TTS is not? I steer clear of the standard outright.

TTS has done far better with "advancing the storyline" than GW ever could have done.

When TTS!Cawl is more believable than Canon!Cawl, you know the current Canon is worthless.

Yeah. not sure how far I agree with this. Probably about as far as I could throw a fully armoured Custodian?

My take on TTS: is it lore accurate? Hell no. I wouldn't appreciate having a lore discussion using TTS 'evidence'. Is it fun? Subjective, but you enjoy what you like. Is is bad? God no. I love the memes, but I'd never use them seriously. I'm also not fond of certain things in it, and I can find it a little childish, but that doesn't make it bad or wrong, it just means that's not my thing. Who cares if someone else likes it?

I wish I could get into Alfabusa's content, like the first video in the OP, or their podcast-esque discussion on the old Ian Watson novels, but I find the in-character style obnoxious.

On that note, are there any good podcast/roundtable discussion videos about 40K themes that don't have contrived accents and wacky characters, and just talk about the content?

(Yes, I'm no fun, stick in the mud, blah blah)

Can you even imagine the reaction of....certain people on dakka if people deviated as significantly from RAW as that monopoly free parking thing?

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

You mean that thing that's specifically banned from Monopoly tournaments?

All joking aside, I fething HATE when people use that rule. It's entirely missing the point of why Monopoly was made and just further slows down an already slow game.

There's Monopoly Tournaments? Jesus... that's gotta be like a week-long affair.

But, anyway, the point is: if you don't like that rule, don't use it. No one is gonna force ya to sit down and play a game with rules you hate. Same thing for TTS; no one is forcing you to watch it, or engage in lore discussions with those who do. If you get mad over something you can easily avoid, that's on you.

I rather like TTS. I think their use of the bedrock (read: what they base the story) lore is more accurate than some give them credit. It is certainly better than most people understanding of Primaris Space Marines. And I suspect good deal peoples' knowledge about 40k in general. The lore is super not concrete anyways and wanders a bit from writer to writer and edition to edition. I also happen to think the best way to treat 40k lore is much like comic book lore perhaps even without the Earth Zero idea that DC Comics uses. At the same time, I do try to proscribe to the MST3K line, "It's just a show; I should really just relax."

It is certainly a given that as the format moved from the Emperor complaining about stuff to his Custodes caretaker that the series has moved further and further from the source material. Especially since the series started well before Gathering Storm. I would hard pressed to believe that there are people that actually play AND care one iota about the background that truly think that Corvus and Vulcan are seemingly touring all the Imperial Guard planets and Calgar is seeking out Jaghatai as a secondary mission to challenge the Dark Eldar to a dance contest.

I think the series caringly jokes and points out the stupid of the Warhammer 40k setting. And trust me, the setting is plenty stupid (that's what I like about it and find it so endearing). I don't know how much of an audience it has out of those to are pretty familiar with the setting. I suppose a good amount as I believe the videos get some 1/4 to 1/2 million views, and I am certain there aren't nearly that many have gone to the trouble of looking into the setting too far. As mentioned, I consider it more like comic books which take different shapes depending on the media and the audience they are intended for. I mean Batman runs the gamut from 4-color comic do-gooder to film nior psychopath. There might be a 'true' Batman in there somewhere, but ultimately he is a fictional character and I don't mind there being several re-tellings of his exploits to fit the audience.

***

As for this particular video, I find it misses the mark in some ways while nailing others in more subtle ways. I disagree with the idea that the menial was more human than the Space Marine will ever be. After all, the space marine was once a baby and a boy before the augmentation process and was always fully human. Depending on the chapter, a good portion of the space marine's time as a scout was still that of a human. As a soldier, so identity is muted by the military organization. Just because a man or space marine comply with the will of their superiors no longer means they cease to be who they are. They might be changed from the experience, but there well aspects of the fundamental person that remain.

As for the lack of paint on the armor of the marine and it still looking better than the mish-mash of the menial. Yes menial looks aesthetically displeasing. However, the menial has personality from that rather poor appearance. The marine on the other hand, is a plaststeel copy of every other marine. I like to think that this relates very well to the hobby side of 40k. Crazy conversions and paint jobs give your models some personality even if they aren't the best. I am not going to remember much of anything about a squad of gray plastic tacticals built as per the instructions. But throw a horse skull on them and then they start to develop some personality. I mean, my Primaris marines are pretty boring with few conversions/kitbashing done to them. Even their OD Green paint job is hardly the most exciting thing. Yet, I think them having pretty standard builds and very military color scheme lends them some personality. I think even those that don't know the Raptors chapter (which my Marines actually aren't) can look at my marines and could infer that my marines are a no non-sense, professional miltary chapter that leans toward modern chivalry over the more standard medieval warrior-monk. Although, the number of chainswords should still reveal that they, like myself, still enjoy honorable melee combat.

40k is, fundamentally, a parody of itself. To quote something I saw a fair while ago;

some rando wrote:a whole lot of the fun and appeal of 40k is how stupid and over-the-top and 80s and maximalist and anachronistic it all is. This big bag of sci-fi tropes, medieval and renaissance history, Catholicism, the Western European literary canon, and post-Tolkien fantasy, stuffed into a giant blender, then satirized by way of 2000 A.D. and Alan Moore, then plugged into an amp stolen from Iron Maiden's bus by a drunken goth, then turned up to 11, then playing a weird 16th century English ballad on it.

TTS Is a parody of a parody of something that only existed in some people’s minds. 40k was never meant to be taken seriously, and people should remember that.

See that stuff above? Completely true. All of it, every single word. Stands to reason.
