The problem is that the list is over the limit by 18 points, yet there isn't anything obvious I can drop. One Idea I have is to run this as Sept Vior'la and then drop all the target locks since all my weapons are assault already. Any advice?

Also, does anyone know if the Cyclic Ion blasters come 1 to a kit or not? I'm going to need 20 of them so I'm concerned about the cost.

Target lock is completely useless on the crisis suits.. ATS is prefered 100%
Also you have zero markerlights which is always essential for T'au.. I would consider dropping a unit of broadsides for markerlights support and drones or you're probably going to have a pretty tough time with 18 " guns

You need more CP. It may be cool to play a themed army but it won't be effective. If you're happy with that then go ahead but if you want a fair chance of winning then you will need to change things up a bit.

Drop a unit of crisis suits, get a cadre fireblade and 3 units of fire warriors with a markerlight in each. Turn your detachment into a battalion for more CP. Not sure how many points that would leave you but it'd be enough to get some drones. Personally I'd drop the crisis suits altogether, they are too fragile for my liking, maybe fit in a riptide instead and some marksmen.

This is a suit list, I do not run or own any models that are not suits.

As per tournament rules:

"All armies are restricted to no more than 4 command points. Stratagems [Non-BRB] may only be used 1 time per game. All stratagems are reduced to a cost of 1CP, regardless of what is printed on their card, with the exception of the three basic stratagems from the BRB, which now cost 0 command points the first time you use them, and then 1 command point if you choose to use them a second time."

Also, I play my tau as if they were guard at BS4. I don't own any infantry anymore and do not plan to purchase them. I'm simply wondering what I can shuffle around to free up some points so as to make my list legal. I am now in agreeance with the poster who suggested dropping the TL in favor of just talking the sept that covers me army wide.

Keep in mind, Stabilization Systems tenet only prevents the moving and firing heavy weapon penalty. It does nothing for advancing and firing Assault weapons.

To get back to the Markerlight issue, with the number of CiBs you’re running, deliberately locking yourself out of your only source of Reroll 1s is a critical vulnerability. You’re gonna take significant (and unnecessary) self inflicted damage.

Vior'la is move and fire assault with no penalty, not heavy.

Should I choose to use the upgraded profile, my plan is to run them just as S7-2. Since this event also bans the use of Vehicles and Titans as well as limits -1 to hit abilities to never being better than -1 to hit, the majority of the armies will be running troops and elites and so on. I should be able to wound them with the S7 pretty easily.

Part of the issue for me is that I just don't like marker lights. When I play games with my tau, we usually just run them as BS3 army wide and it doesn't really seem to make them all that OP compared to the other things out there. Obviously that can't be done for this event, but I'm not too worried about being BS4.

All this info regarding the tournament rules would have been useful in your first post so we could give you accurate advise.

Am I also right in thinking that you are basically ignoring the codex rules and doing what you want? BS3 Tau with S7 -2ap CIBs is...well it's not the rules. The rules are there to be played too, if you're ignoring them I suggest just doing whatever you want as it's not going to matter.

You could I guess run this. Its not that much different than your current list. I would suggest either Tau Sept or Farsight Enclaves (and make sure you know what both septs do)

136 XV8 Enforcer Commander CIBx3, ATS

198 3 x XV8 Crisis Suit - CIBx2, ATS
198 3 x XV8 Crisis Suit - CIBx2, ATS
198 3 x XV8 Crisis Suit - CIBx2, ATS
148 Ghostkeel, Burst Cannon, Cyclic Iron Raker, ATS, Target Lock, 2 x Stealth Drones
148 Ghostkeel, Burst Cannon, Cyclic Iron Raker, ATS, Target Lock, 2 x Stealth Drones
363 3 x Broadsides HYMP, SMS, ATS
60 6 x Sheild Drones
50 5 x Sheild Drones

1499

CIB... only comes with the commander kit, and you get only 1. You can order some from Shapeways or Red Dog Mini's. I think mine came from Shapeways. Expect to spend 3$ each, my suggestion is getting the double CIB, so you only need a single one per model.

If you have any infantry you desperately need markerlights, if you don't want to do that, then I suggest farsight enclaves, at range 12 everyone is considered to have a markerlight. Plus Farsight is a very cheap HQ (110pts), you'll want to use Command and control node on your broadsides, at least once, plus this way you can squeeze in more drones, which you need. Another suggestion is, missile pods in place of CIB. The superior range and slightly cheaper cost will also allow you to have more sheild drones. Also if you are Farsight Enclaves you can upgrade on unit of crisis suits to BS3 WS4, which is very very nice.

You already have the max 4cp for the tournament, so that's good.

Im not talking about Vior'la. Im talking about Stabilization Systems, which you wanted to run in place of your TLs.

If you're not overcharging, CIBs are entirely inferior to Missile Pods.

You're not worried about a 33% decrease in accuracy?

Oi.

Definitely. The degree of house ruling here is certainly...something.

Normally we do, but in a tournament we must play by the rules as written.

In place of the TLs I was just going to run either a shield generator or ATS.

I understand that a lot of you don't like this list, but all I needed was advice for how to cut it down. Removing all the TLs did that, so I'm good to go!

The House Ruling exists because we all got sick and tired of how dumb the rules are for the game. For months we've basically been writing our own version of the rules and so far things are working out very well. We've been seeing games that are far more interesting than the "Who goes first, usually wins" ruleset of 8th. Just for fun,

We also use the wounding system from Apoc. That way Alpha strikes are meaningless and the game isn't a debalanced 2K vs 1700 mess after turn one. Titans always take double damage from AT weapons such as Melta or Lascannons. And most of the characters have had their auras removed in favor of "each turn target a unit on the battlefield and grant their aura ability to that unit for the turn" type of a thing.

Chapter Approved 2019 solved that problem. Now the defender gets to choose sides, and deployment zone. That heavily skews the game towards the defender so the player who goes first has a large disadvantage.
