What is the speed difference between editions where your army is good and editions where your army is trash?

Well for myself, I play orkz and with today's announcement that GW is getting ready for 9th I was floored! But we just started 8th edition like last year how is it that its already time for a new edition? And then I went and looked it up. 8th edition is 3 years old and it feels like its been around for about a year because my Ork army is competitive, has new units, has new rules and I don't feel like I am at a massive disadvantage when I deploy my army against 70% of the other armies in the game.

In contrast, I am reasonably sure 7th edition was a decade long slog fest filled with disappointment after disappointment. Turns out, yep, it was 3 years long as well. The main difference being that every time I deployed I knew i was at a massive disadvantage and that my opponent either had to tune down his list, or if I was in a tournament, my opponent viewed my army as an easy win.

Both editions had there outliers, I remember a game in 7th against an Eldar Net list player where I one shot about 1/2 his army with a ridiculously lucky Shokk Attack Gun shot, while likewise in 8th I lost to an noncompetitive Chaos list that rolled an ungodly number of Demonic saves.

Think about the difference in editions and which ones went faster/slower for you

3rd seemed to go on forever, in a good way. I was a lot more active at the time, and it was ever changing, so always felt fresh.

5th was another one that felt like it had a solid run.

I have trouble mentally separating time spent in 6th and 7th. Part of that might be the short run of 6th. Collectively a good run, but 6th did sour me on buying supplements and play aids.

8th feels like it has been a good time. I would have been OK with another year or two of it, but c’est la vie.

2nd and 4th I played a few games of, but mostly sat out due to life issues. RT I played a bit, but more as an RPG then a wargame. All feel like I didn’t spend that long playing.

no idea about other editions, but in my case GK were kind of a bad or hard to play with at the start of 8th ed, got progresivly worse over time. With PA they got good, and more important fun to play with. No idea how they are going to be with the changes to melee, tanks and terrain.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I played nids and DE from 5th till.. now.
Nids even been "good" outside of 6 flyrants.

DE has been good in 8th but at the cost of removing all flavor out of it, i'd rather go back to being bad if i can play DE how it was played for 15yrs+ and get back some of the really fun flavorful rules and characters.

I also play Quins, they've always been "that cool army you don't see"

It could just be old age; time speeds up for us old ones. I believe that 8th was released last Christmas.

I feel it's time for a new edition. There have been so many rule changes, updates, faqs.

Also over time we've all agreed some things need to change. Vehicles being tagged, terrain not having enough influence, etc

What's clear is that this new edition will really change the game up. Forget everything you know now lol

I just wonder about the Codex release schedule. What I suspect is that all innovation will cease as we spam new dexes. I was hopeful for another aspect to be released in plastic, Emperor's Children as their own army, and good alien auxiliary for Tau.

Now with 8th, they did release some "new" stuff while they were racing to get dexes out, so it's theoretically possible that they could do some of these things even as codices get reprinted.

But I expect this just pushed the timeline on everything I wanted back by at least two years, and probably three. Worse, by resetting before we got there, they've undermined my faith that I'll ever get the things I wanted.

Instead I'' just have another Space marine dex.
Another Blood Angels dex.
Another Spacewolves dex.
Another Dark Angels dex.

Having a hard time wrapping my head around it. The least three years might as well never have happened.

Nobody's waiting for anything that's actually new anymore. We're just waiting for the old to get a new face again.

It sucks.

... Welcome to Games Workshop. Can I interest you in a new Spess Mehreen Codex? Only the best for our Boys in Blue!

In all seriousness, though, is this your first Edition Change? Cause this is pretty much how it goes every three years or so...

Oh. And here I was thinking I was looking forward to those Ad-Mech flyers, winged guys, & mech horses.
I'm also looking forward to seeing how the new rules in general shape up, particularly the Crusade stuff.

You also don't seem to understand how this works. At all. Every edition so far has added new things - models, armies, rules, concepts/lore - while recycling (most of) what's come before.
So why shouldn't I expect 9th to do so as well?

also to complain that we're just getting the same ole over and over is silly. back when I started, at the tail end of 5th edition new armies where pretty rare the Tau where the last new army added to 40k at the time roughly a decade old being brought in in 2001 in 3rd edition. 7th edition gave us death watch, admech imperial knights and GSC, then 8th edition gave us custodes, death guard, chaos knights, 1k sons (ok arguably they where late 7th edition) and expanded greatly on the new armies from 7th edition. to claim GW's not giving us anything new because they're putting out lots of space marines is outright silly.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Devil's advocate for a moment: Everything Custodes got that's interesting (barring the Jetbikes) is Forge World, GW just released two new kits (Allarus/Wardens) that do the exact same thing the Guard did but with slightly different numbers. AdMech in 8e got a bare minimum maintenance fix (putting the Cult Mechanicus and the Skitarii in the same book) and one kit (depending on whether you want to count the Engine War units as "released in 8e" given that COVID has pushed them back far enough it'll probably be 9e before they land). Thousand Sons got nothing but slightly more interaction with existing CSM units. Imperial Knights got two units split into four boxes to make them harder to magnetize. Deathwatch got nothing.

The "GW's not giving us anything new because they're putting out lots of space marines" complaint comes from things like the Guard, Craftworld Eldar, and Necrons, who have been sitting on the same basic Troop kits for around twenty years while the Space Marines have gotten three new Tactical Squad kits, two 30k Tactical Squad kits, and two different new Primaris Troop units. Or the fact that in 8e the Space Marines got more releases than all the Xenos armies put together. Space Marines get more replacements for old kits than most Xenos armies get new kits.

All valid points... That have been valid points for a very VERY long time. GW will always update Spess Mehreens because Spess Mehreens sell... And Spess Mehreens sell because they are constantly updated. We all know the cycle. Most of us have watched it unfold for 10+ years. I'm glad to see my Crons get some love... But my joy is tempered by the fact that I know this attention will be fleeting. Only Spess Mehreens are forever. Atleast in the eyes of GW.
