Why do you think they went to the effort to put them in the trailer and not have them in the box?
Has there ever been a box without UM in it
Honestly? They put them in there because OMG HYPE.
The reality is that GW took a risk with the SoB line, and wanted to ensure that it had continued spotlight and sales. All of this stuff for 9th was done before SoB went on sale and before GW knew how successful they were going to be, which all signs point to "Very!"
So keeping the hype up (And it was very Cool!) all helps contribute to that.
Also I think the marketing people said that more diversity would make the game seem more accessable to differant markets. by putting sisters of battle front and center they send a message to girls "hey girls, this isn't JUST a guys game, there are women in 40k and they're just as awesome as men!" likewise notice the eradicator sergant is black? that's intentional.
Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
I have to agree that SOB are in the trailer to up the diversity in the trailer along with being a further advertising push for the model range. Putting a Sister of Battle front and center as the lead protagonist serves both goals rather well. After all, there are no female Space Marines or Necrons.
You can complain the Space Marine saves her and takes over the story. However, the Marines quickly find themselves in trouble and have the the Sisters join the fight to save them. The two forces then unite to take on the big boss in the final moments of the trailer. A good job of giving all three forces moments in the limelight.

Yeah, I've always thought about this. The kicker is that they use these boxes to deliver new models. If they didn't, it would be easy- hey there's a new edition, so you can buy the book OR take advantage of the "New to the edition deal"- get the book and two starter boxes for a special low price.
But when you use an edition drop as a new model release, it wonks everything up. There is no way they could create new models for six ranges and release them all in the same month. Not only the production time, they'd also have to starve the market while the product was in development, and then saturate the market on release day. Both are bad business strategies.

Female Marines? Not in canon, but female Necrons? Absolutely! Meet Phaerakh Xun'bakyr, the Mother of Oblivion. Responsible for the Orpheus War, which saw the entire sector fall in 100 days.

The majority of necron forces are agender, lacking any sort of sufficient identity to be male or female. But, while all the produced character models for Necrons are male-identified, there is at least one canon female-identified named Necron, mentioned already. She looks just like the other Necron Phaerons, except with orange glowing bits.
Because they're all skeleton robot chassis, they all look well, like skeleton robots, but those that have identities at all do have gender identities, and some of them are of the feminine persuasion. [Which of course, makes the whole "robot with breasts" models that some certain 3rd party companies manufacture ridiculous, since A: breast tissue isn't part of the skeleton and B: there are female necron models already. Any necon you want can be male or female at your discretion.]

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

When I say "no female Necrons" I mean "no identifiable female Necrons". They could be all female, but you can't tell by looking at the models.
what does a male or female necrontyr look like? what did their representative skeletal structure look like? Who knows, there might not even have been visible sexual dimorphism in Necrontyr physiology.
But I just want more variants of the Battle Sister to fill out roles.
Troops, FA, Elites, etc
Seen a few people getting bent out of shape because they were expecting Sisters in the new box. Seems to me like another example of the internet putting 2 and 2 together, getting 5, discussing it as though it's already confirmed, then getting mad at GW when the thing they've basically made up in their imagination doesn't materialise (cf the "Orktober" debacle of 2018).

Plenty of Female Necrons in canon and lore
I AM A MARINE PLAYER
"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos
"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
Obviously the Indomitus box and presumably the proper starter box will be SM vs Necrons, but I can definitely see them doing a First Strike or Know No Fear equivalent with Sisters instead of Marines.

Yeah but not in a big box that says to newcomers, this is where you start. I think it would make the universe more appealing and accessible for some people. Even as kid I thought the UM sucked and read about every chapter except them. I think the thing about UM is that after all this time GW haven’t found a way to make them badass

Oh noes scoobs, there’s a black guy in 40k, and that’s deliberately to enforce muh forced diversity, not because black people.... exist, and there’s no good reason for him to be white.

See that stuff above? Completely true. All of it, every single word. Stands to reason.
2nd Edition wasn't, I'm not even sure if it had any Chapter bias, 3rd was Black Templars and 6th/7th was Dark Angels.
I think this is that thing harkening back to the days of 2nd ed. where all Marines are called Ultramarines unless they are Wolves or Angels

Why not refer to CSM as Black Legion? As a Crimson Fists player I gotta say it gets tiresome constantly bein identified as the Smurfs.
Yeah I wish they would call it codex black legion it’s not generic enough to be codex CSM
You missed my point entirely. Having subtraction focused models instead of generic enough to be applicable to all subfactions is a giant "feth you" to, in this case, anyone that doesn't specifically play UM or BL. Imagine if all Eldar models in a boxed set were heavily marked with 1 craftworld's markings, it's the exact opposite of faction inclusivity.

Am I missing something from Brians post or is this a superheavy strawman?
Invictus is a limited availability "launch set," pitched at veterans looking for the full rulebook and all the new Primaris and Necron models. We still don't know what the ongoing starter set for 9th is going to look like. It's possible, especially if GW is serious about pushing new markets with their shiny revamped line of female models, that a starter set, aimed at new players, could be Sisters vs. Necrons, still.
I’d totally missed that this wasn’t the starter set. I suppose that will be out for Xmas. It will be a bold move to have SOB as the goodies and no SM as I expect that won’t appeal to teenage boys. However I do like the idea of GW pushing SOB as one of the main imperial armies maybe even over guard. Which is why I got the impression this would be the first box with 3 armies.

Having that level of prominance in the trailer and subsequently is a great step forward -and we know GW is trying to make sure they are more diverse as well so its a bright future at the moment.
Equally there is no Cadian trooper
Really hope they are in the novel tie in / lore book and will be released in due course with the initial Sisters Start Collecting box .
the One Female Cadian will be released as a 30$ special edition model with on a 32mm base standing on a large rock at a later date.
Thus resolving All Requests For Female Guard! Problem solved!
"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Hey, perhaps. But he said “notice the eradication sergeant is black? that’s intentional.” Ergo, the sergeant isn’t black because there’s no reason for him not to be, he’s black in order to appeal to people who want black people in 40k. Or that’s the most sense I can make of it.

Lot sooner. You think GW will leave 40k out for months? The launch set is limited edition aka with limited print run. Those don't tend to last that long.
Also good chance the 120£ prize is actually the real starter set rather than the launch set. 120£ feels too cheap for the limited ed box.
