My first N&R post! Huzzah!
https://warisboring.com/us-army-may-name-air-defense-vehicle-after-warhammer-40k-armored-unit/
The army is considering naming an air defense vehicle after the...
...Drumroll please!...
Manticore!
They even cite 40K as the inspiration for the name.
Now, I wonder if GW will C&D the US Army?
Edit: spelling!

Naming military hardware after mythical creatures or entities is hardly a new development. Nor is 40k the only 'verse in which the Manticore is a tank.

I'm joking, of course. And I wouldn't worry about 'taking the wrong inspiration', because generally speaking most people aren't mentally defective enough to emulate the fiction from a tabletop toy game.
Of note, though: In the US, there's a FLGS not far from every base- usually more than one. US Military is full of nerds.

I wouldn't worry about it.
We should only start to worry if they name something after the Leman Russ and cram a bunch of tank crew into something resembling a pot-bellied oven with a turret.

Seriously anyone who sees the word Manticore and thinks of 40k before myth needs some perspective.
If DoD names this tank a Manticore it'll be because a Manticore is a monster that shoots out spikes, basically the same logic that led GW to name their fictional tank a Manticore.

But Tau!...... lol. I once was at some war training room somewhere and I saw this young Warrent Officer building model tanks. On duty. I joked that he had the best job ever, and he looked up kind of conspiratorially and said. "Shhhh. Don't tell anyone I like doing this. It's not supposed to be fun". He did admit that building 120 Russian tanks of the same kit became boring but he just alternated the kits after a bit. Funniest thing was he wasn't a war gamer or model builder before being posted to that position as a props curator of sorts. I don't remember the official title but he got caught up by the model bug and had started playing Battle Tech.

It used to be a Gamestop until AAFES started pushing their GameZone in the Exchange. The Gamestop moved out and a game store moved in. It was basically MtG only until Tank took over.

Ah got it. Still not 'naming that tank after warhammer' it's noting the name is in use already so people can choose with that awareness.
Kinda like noting that the name Enterprise has meanings and implications beyond WWII aircraft carrier.

the fact that they even mention warhammer 40k though is pretty intreasting. they don't for example mention the manticore tank from battletech, at the very least it's a sign of our hobby having some cultural reach

Kind of like those science articles with the headlines "astronomers discover Vulkan/Krypton/Whatever". Which is certainly more clicky than "astronomers find another ex-planet which we will never ever be able to travel to but which is kinda sorta near where Vulkan might be according to some Star Trek novels maybe".
It is interesting that Warhammer (in this very narrow and specific context of naming weapon systems) is considered worth mentioning. And that Warhammer is considered worth putting in a headline to lure clicks. Automatically Appended Next Post: And just for giggles:
Star Wars
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Manticore
Star Trek
https://sto.gamepedia.com/Manticore_Heavy_Destroyer
Marvel
https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Manticore_(Criminal)_(Earth-616)
DC
https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Manticore
But none are missile tanks so the Warhammer and Battletech tanks are the closest matches that might cause confusion if the name were used by DoD.

Reminds me of all the "Kryptonite is REAL!" clickbait articles from 10 years ago when they found a mineral that vaguely matched a comic description of Kryptonite.

I thought US military usually named their tanks after famous generals and war heroes.
Perhaps they think it safer to name it after mythological monsters in this day and age.
