I mean let's be fair here, you are talking about badly done paintjobs or conversions in the blanchitsu style. You can easily turn that around to regular badly painted minis and say they look like a child ate some crayons in kindergarten and puked all over the mini.

No, I'm talking about the overwhelming majority of Blanchitsu. It's my opinion, sure. But 90% of the models look like garbage. Literal, actual garbage on a model base. With texturing powder.

And it's not often the actual paint involved- it's the actual style itself that irks me. It's one of those things that very, very rarely works. Examples:

This is what most Blanchitsu I see looks like: https://spikeybits.com/2018/04/mechanics-of-evil-armies-on-parade.html

That just looks gross and lazy. From the entire assembly of the model, to the actual paint job.

https://thedeathzap.wordpress.com/2020/01/25/the-blanchitsu-is-strong-with-this-one/

I don't even know what this is.

Again, as Statistx said, those are some IMO not very well converted or painted minis, which makes it seem more reflective of the skill of execution rather than the style itself.

What about these?

I mean if it's just not your thing even when done technically well, fair enough! But I wouldn't (for example) post a newbie's sloppy attempt at edge highlighting to illustrate why I don't like the 'Eavy Metal style.

So, since this thread has covered how much a good paint job can enhance the public opinion of a model, I thought it would be a good opportunity to vent about the opposite.

So..... Star Wars: Legion. Hurray, a new Star Wars tabletop game! Boo model quality we all cried. No where was that more apparent than when FFG announced Han with this abomination:

A couple years later and I decide I don't really want a Rebel army but it'd be fun to run the main 6 characters in the game (though the lack of one obvious rule makes this illegal so I have to rely on opponents cool with facing a rather underpowered/illegal build). Imagine my surprise when I start painting this:

Spoiler:

Like, its still not the greatest figure I've painted, but still... the figure actually kind of resembles Harrison Ford. Enough that most people I've shown it to guess its Indy. I'm just kind of shocked how much that first imagine skewed my perception of the model line until I worked on it myself. I think that runs both ways more often than we'd like to admit.

That is their job though. I mean sure they are allowed a swing and a miss every so often but just because you can cover every millimeter in fetishes and trinkets doesn't mean you have to.

Not having your vehicles look like you sprayed them with contact adhesive and threw them in a box of spare weapons would be a good start...

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

Haha, great comparison, also I guess that's how you get Ork vehicles.

Han Solo

Good job on your take. I think the first one isn't a bad paintjob, but rather a bad photo and not too close to what he's supposed to be, like if you write a great literature homework, but it's math class right now.

My vote is easily the 2nd edition Tyranid Biovore. When I first got into 40k, I started playing with the bugs and had this model. I just think its terrible looking.

The entire primaris line barring the Judiciar, anything Deathguard, Magnus the Red, Junith Eruita. These are all god-awful. The huge new necron throne is also terrible but I haven't seen it in person yet.

Miniatures like these 2 I think really hit the balance between being spartan and being marred by clutter. Plus the old Typhus model mentioned earlier. I know I give out about the limited / flat poses of 2ed era metal characters, but that aside, there's an elegance to the sculpts that the current design team should pay more attention to. A bit of subtlety in detail goes a long way. As someone else put it on an old thread "I don't need a figure to be adorned with a dozen skulls to stress that it is evil and powerful, or covered in cherubs and candles to show that it is good."
