How do!

Been listening to Ghost Riders in the Sky tonight. Amongst other things.

And being a massive nerd (surely you’ve noticed by now?), I kinda realised. Of all cultural tropes adopted by the original legions and people’s own custom Chapters, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a force accordingly styled as Cowboys? Be they historically or pop culture inspired.

C’mon Dakka. Don’t let me down.

For the track that inspired the thread? I’m imagining some kind of cloaked Jetbike or Landspeeder unit. Leaving a Predator style field of distortion for a canny enemy to clock. And with second thoughts, perhaps the ghost riders in the sky are a recruiting planet myth/legend?

There’s a fair amount of potential there! Perhaps their Assault squads/companies prefer short ranged Fancy Dan gunplay over Chainswords? Think Cowboy Gun Kata.

I was about to lightly ridicule the idea on the basis that one of the lure of the wild west is the individuality, whereas marines are literally faceless conformist.

Than I realised I have made cowboy marines in the form of Marshall Jim Raynor and his rowdy bunch of the Starcraft Terran rebels

Ahhhh, the setting is mindlessly conformist.

Yet. Marines do fit the “kids dream of becoming a Cowboy” quite nicely, in terms of how Imperial propaganda might be interpreted.

They’re the fastest, deadliest shot “in the west”. As an individual? They’re the fearless, invulnerable Law Enforcer that nobody can beat.

They’re bringing Law to the Lawless....

Thanks

I also admit to lazy thought on the whole thing, with dodgy images of marines wearing ponchos and having hats on over their helmets. Not useful.

However, a chapter perhaps that concentrates on sending out individuals and small groups into low security space to Advise locals and PDFs. Kind of like Knights Hospittaler for pilgrims, but where the pilgrims are more like cattle in outlook and numbers.

Concentrating on bikes for mobility rather than rhinos.and thunderhawks. I think the only difficulty is how to marry the power armour aesthetic with the pop culture clothing and apparel of the wild west age.

Hah... and another instance in which the indigenous American tribes got there first with the original.Deathwing lore

So much of the "wild west gunslinger" look comes from the clothes that it sounds hard to combine it with power armor. A poncho would just look goofy... I guess the classic old, worn-out duster might work? I could see a small squad of "marshalls" riding through the desert on their bikes, going from town to town to hunt some no good varmint. With spurs on their boots, just because
When you start adding tanks and heavy weapons though, it seems a bit harder to keep the style, but maybe it'd work.

Honestly, I'm surprised there aren't more "pulp" themed armies in 40k. Like, "cliché samurai" sounds like the most obvious thing to combine with marines, but somehow there doesn't seem to be any canon chapter like that...

I feel like it wouldn't look too bad on the lighter forms of armour. Let's face it, Scouts and Eliminators have cloaks that go over the shoulders already, and that looks pretty good.

All that's missing is the hat then. And a space horse. I wonder if the new mechanicus ones would fit?

I do have Brother Jethro of the 2nd Amendment Marines for my Kill Team deathwatch.

So named because Deathwatch intercessors in kill team are REQUIRED to pay 2 effing points for their stupid regular bolt pistol, a weapon that they will almost never ever use, because that's the cost with special issue ammo (hey, in a game where you usually have 100 points to play with it does actually matter).

So I basically decided that if he was going to have this dumb bolt pistol, I was going to make it

A) incredibly fancy

B) base his entire character around YOULL TAKE MY BOLT PISTOL FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS IM A LEGAL CARRYING CITIZEN AM I BEING DETAINED???

C) pretty much any character in 40k is goddamn hilarious if you put the heads from the Orlock gang kit on them. Best heads in the biz.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Although not cowboy, I could see a 7th cavalry themed marine army led by Captain Custer! Mostly mounted, a few Native Amaerican themed scouts. Could work.

I wish Primaris had shotguns.

Would be an easy conversion, no...? Just a case of finding a shotgun that looks big enough (not that I can think of or find one all that quickly).
OR, have them dual-wield a normal size shotgun like the Scout one.

Does anyone else remember a really old WD where someone had converted an airborne cavalry army of IG (Catachan)? There was a landspeeder converted into a basilisk, plus troops riding hoverboards complete with cowboy hats. I'm now desperately trying to find pics online...

I could see a Marshall theme working with coats and them acting as small scale peacekeeping forces but I could never see them being truly "cowboy" themed because they ideal of the cowboy is of rugged individualism when confronting an unforgiving environment, hard labor, and fast hands when necessary.

Now IG, I could see. Something along the lines of a scout regiment or a mounted infantry regiment. They would be able to fit the mold. You could even run DKoK death rides because they are fearless horsemen.

On the other hand, CUSTODES would also me pretty badass as a cowboy theme because they are rugged individualists who pride themselves on their person labors.

It's not that. I remember the conversion a s well. It was pretty awesome, butnsome light searching does not reveal its awesomeness. May be lost to time.

Um, it is. The entire army is there as they described...

How does one even Anti Grav a Basilisk? Would Air Cav have its own arty anyway that wasn't a gunship?
