That reminded me of the beginning of the movie Scrooged where the network is advertising a Lee Majors action movie where he saves Santa's workshop from a Terrorist attack.

It won't be anything like that....... but it made me think of that......

It looks like something that could have been fun, but won’t be. The tone feels like Zach Snyder directing a Paul Verhoeven film. There’s something off-putting about this.

Something besides Mel Gibson, that is. But even just his casting tells me this film isn’t for me.

Yeah... Mel Gibsons the line for me. I won't be paying for this in any way.

We don’t *have* to. I choose to for the following g reasons:

His DUI
His antisemitism
His homophobic slurs
His bigoted slurs, including shouting the n-word
His domestic abuse

I mean, sure, it’s possible he called Wynona Ryder an “oven-dodger” in a friendly way and she misunderstood. There are plenty of actors out there who have better judgement.

Yeah... Every time I see Mel Gibson all I hear is the recording of him telling his ex wife "I hope you get raped by a pack of n*****s"

Which is a sentence with a lot to unpack. The hope for rape. The use of the word "pack" followed by the racial slur.

It's pretty much just the right thing to do to hate on Mel.

I always find it odd how we associate an actor with a movie. Lets be honest, regardless of the name of the actor there would be a dozen, if not hundreds of other people who could play the exact role.

That aside, yeah Mel has sort of built a track record showing he's not someone I'd like to support.

See far as I can tell Hollywood itself breeds and corrupts people toward those ends - often adding in a lot of drugs as well. It's a high life of insane pay cheques and sudden vast wealth and a subculture that breeds its own corruption and twisting of people.

Rather like a cult its capable of twisting people without them realising.

That said this is honestly why I generally pay no attention to personalities being creative endeavours that I enjoy. I will enjoy a film or a book or a game or whatever and I honestly just separate my interest in that from the people involved. So in a sense I don't care who they are, only in what they produce.

Also I dislike the notion of choosing to not watch a film because of one individual. Even if he might get paid an insane amount, there's the livelyhood of so many other people involved. From camera operators; set designers; scouts; lighting crews; chefs; orderlies and so so so so many others. Mel might be the star, but he's not the only one involved nor the only one who has worked hard. If anything many paid far less have likely worked far harder. Perhaps Mel doesn't "deserve" the money, but the others likely do.

The thing is the vast majority of the people working on the movie already got paid. They have an hourly wage and no clause in a contract that gives them a % of profit. It's exceedingly rare for ANYONE to have a contract that gives them a % of profits. So the movie not getting watched likely effects no one but Mel and maybe the director and probably the producers. They won't stop making movies and employing the vast majority of the staff just because this movie bombs (or doesn't).

That being said generally I agree with you. The author is dead and the work stands on it's own. My personal issue is that I cannot see Mel without hearing his garbage. It ruins all his past and modern works for me. It is what it is.

I'm conflicted because there is the Mel Gibson element but there is also Walter Goggins, who is almost always entertaining.

I would rather gurgle rat poison and wash it down with acid than to watch a movie with that man in it. Also, Chrismas is only for children or people who desperately need to find hope in the winter.

I don’t believe Hollywood is any more corrupting than politics, or the presence of wealth, fame and/or power in general. Frankly, there are lots and lots of terrible people (but also great people); we just don’t hear about them until they have the fame/wealth/power to feel free enough of consequences to really indulge themselves.

I also don’t feel that his misbehavior necessarily ruined his previous movies. I’ll still rewatch Mad Max even if some bits come across differently with the current context. But for movies I haven’t seen yet, I can’t go in fresh and enjoy them. I won’t be comfortable “supporting” such a person’s career. Knowing he hates people like me tinges my view of his performances.

And I’ll reiterate that this particular type of story is especially uncomfortable knowing the lead star’s feelings; whether or not the film was written to have an agenda, it now fits with Mel’s ranting madness a little to well to be entirely sure it’s free of one. I don’t want to see a “wacky” movie about Santa Clause taking back Christmas from those ungrateful others who dare underappreciate it. The unintended (?) subtext would sap any lighthearted entertainment out of it for me.

I have to admit his presence tempts me. He had great character actor energy in Antman and the Wasp, and great character actors are my jam.

As far as I know, Tom Cruise has never said anything hateful about classes of people, but I could be wrong. I haven’t heard of any domestic abuse on his part that doesn’t ...uh... how do I put this? ...fall inside the leeway given to normal people living by honestly held (though less mainstream) religious beliefs of all stripes. Again, please let me know if I’ve missed a news story.

Yeah?
But apparently many of Hollywood's more specialized though guy actors are extremely nice individuals in real life. The Rock seems like the nicest guy, and I read about Dany Trejo just recently, seems like it's the same, except he wasn't before Hollywood. I mean, he changed before Hollywood, but shows that he had the potential to be a violent though guy but Hollywood didn't push him this way.
It's not all action stars that are nice either (Steven Seagall seems particularly awful) but let's not discount individual personalities and pretend it's just the Hollywood environment.

Kirk Douglas, in addition to putting his butt on the line to get Trumbo credit after being blacklisted, reported practiced for six months to be able to say "I love you" to his wife on TV after his stroke. Thats steel, absolute steel.

Charlton Heston was an equal rights and bill of rights advocate before it was cool.

James Stewart flew a bomber in WWII and participated in Normandy.

Bozo the Clown found a typewriter and reportedly wrote Romeo and Juliet. Reportedly there were some spelling errors.

I don't know what QANON is, nor do I care. I heard it comes from 4chan or something. Last time I went to that site was back in 2009ish.

I've just read news that comes out of Hollywood. My conclusions come from reality, not rumor.

Anyway, if I had to judge enjoying art due to the corrupt premises held by artists, I wouldn't enjoy anything, really. Specifically, If I had to care about what principles actor's lack, I'd never see another movie again.

I don't care about Mel Gibson's views anymore than I do of Brie Larson.

If the movie seems slightly interesting, I'll give it a watch.

Fatman reminds me of Bad Santa. It's been coming on 20 years since I've seen a Christmas movie like that. The last pack of Mel flicks have been bad, so I'm hoping this one is a gem in the rough.

Yet
You expect us to believe you know anything about everyone in Hollywood.

Already addressed.

"I've just read news that comes out of Hollywood. My conclusions come from reality, not rumor."

The only thing I know about QANON is something to do with Trump mentioning the group, the group deals with conspiracy theories, and 4Chan.

If you know more, please, enlighten me. I don't follow such things.

Also, I just did a quick search, and found lists of hollywood actors and other members of that field who have been mixed up with anti-semetic remarks, pedophilia, rape and child molestation. You guys can take the 20 seconds to do that on your own.

Obviously you are being purposefully obtuse to the essential point of my previous post concerning not caring about the personal lives of entertainers and the enjoyment of their movies.

If Fatman is good, then it's good. If it's bad, then it's bad. I don't care if the guy handling the camera, or the caterer, or grip, or actors are nasty people in context of the final product.
