Thanks for the AAR. Had I played your elephants I'd have used a Alexander period Macedonian army myself. (Maybe someday I'll actually assemble mine ... Only 1 test figure to date, and paid a friend to paint Alex since he's the better painter.)

As for other classic march-ups, have you done Late Republican Roman versus Gauls? Or a very typically classical battle, Late Republican Roman versus Late Republican Roman?

The collective noun for a group of elephants is: a parade

Thanks.
They will be back in a few weeks, with real figures. I just finished the write up.

In L'Art de la Guerre, the Gauls /Germans do not do well against the Romans. The Romans are listed as "Impact, Heavy Swordsmen", which have the native ability to deny the Gauls the Impact ability of the Impetuous charge. Though they do keep the "Furious Charge" part of that attack. The end result is the Romans get +2 on the dice on contact, compared to the +1 for the Gauls, But if they happen to lose, suffer an extra level of disorder.
On following rounds, the Romans are even up in the die rolls with the Gauls , but have "Armor" to protect them.

By odds, this means that 1 on 1, the A cohort of Legionaries win 70% of the fights. But the Gauls are cheaper, costing 8 points to 11 for the Legions. So they will have a numbers advantage.

For every 100pts, the Gauls have 12.5 figures to the Romans' 9.09. So I'd guess that the Gauls need to use the numeric advantage to flank the cohort. Do they have any other advantage, such as faster base speed, or move through difficult terrain? We know Romans did not fight well in terrain such as dense forest.

There are two types of Gallic warriors, the Heavy Swordsmen I described, because they are more combat worthy, and Medium Swordsmen. Medium swordsmen cost 7 points vice 8 for the heavies, They fight infantry the same as heavies and are faster, and fight in rough terrain better than the heavies, but take 3 levels of disorder before destruction vice 4 for the heavies.
So a board that has a lot of woods would be desirable, but the terrain in this game is usually not that dense, with plenty of gaps to fight in.

So unless the Gallic player does have terrain, and flank advantages, the Roman will win. Numbers he will have, because the games tend to be identical points.

Another factor is maneuverability. Romans maneuver better. They have better generals. In the game this translates as they can move mover blocks of units. From a meta game point of view, they can make more decisions every turn, with a smaller army.

The Gallic disadvantage is two fold. They have weaker generals. Which translate to fewer decisions they can make in a turn, and their units are classed as "Unmaneuverable". Which means any move other than a forward move takes more command points.

On top of that if they are in charge reach of an enemy unit, they will charge!

In the ultimate, victory through excess was cheaper than defeat without waste.

Thanks for the explanation. It really does not seem playing as the Gauls would be any fun.

They Can be, but it requires a certain mind set. The Gauls do have decent Cav, and the Romans are usually not good at Cav. So the most likely way to get a flank is with your mounted, before your Warriors crack.

Germans can give a better showing with their infantry, because despite the same limits, they can (all) be Elite. That sort of counters the Armor advantage. But German Cav is not very numerous.....
