Hello,

I've decided to turn these lads from the starter into Assault Marines/Jump Marines or Vanguards

Would you allow this?

I played against a local guy that had Death Company with the same conversion and he gave me a heads up that he got some flak about it since basic assault marines only have 1 Wound but with one of the recent erratas I think they went to 2 Wounds. I havent played since this went into effect.

I assume since there is assault marine equivalent Primaris unit released right now - do you think this conversion would work?

They're the same base size as.

Do you know if Assault Marines have 2 wounds now? Do you know what document to link my opponent to show they've been updated?

I sort of want to take the unit due to the 2W

They have 2 wounds, yep. The documents is the new space marines codex, that you can buy from your FLGS, GW, or ... other internet secret ninja arts that I cannot name.

You could but as you would represent 7 foot warriors with models for 8 foot scale breaks. You would need to upscale all primaris models head taller or it looks silly

The question is this - where are you playing?

Local friendly games? I really don't see an issue here. I'd play you all day no problems. An actual tournament? Ask the organizer.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Don't primaris have bigger bases then regular marines?

All normal have a 32mm base. Gravis normally have a 40mm like terminators.

I think it's a great idea. I think a squad painted up in 1st company colours would also make great vanguard veterans. And converting space marine weapons is really easy when we're talking pistols and sword hands.

Were firstborn Assault Marines and Vanguard both reboxed for this? I've got some older models, but they came with 25mm originally.
That is one of only two complaints I could possibly see about this... an increased base footprint making it easier to block objective space or other movement routes, etc. The other would be confusion between unit types, especially if you have other non-Primaris models, or Primaris units that are using the proper Primaris models.
That said, I'd be happy with it. As mentioned, the 2W thing is no longer an issue per the new Marines Codex, although Primaris do still typically get an extra Attack over their firstborn counterparts.

I will also say, though - give it a couple months. The new Blood Angels supplement is right around the corner and I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of jump-pack Primaris variant coming with it.

32 has crept into all* marines. Assault marines were, iirc, relatively early since it actually did help with some top-heavy balance issues.
They weren't necessarily reboxed, they just shifted the little bag o' bases to the new size as they kept production going.

*there may be some exceptions with some weird old units (either direct metal/finecast or a dusty box off the back of a shelf somewhere)

They were reboxed in 7th, not 8th.

And I would be surprised if there's jump-Primaris coming, since we haven't seen any previews of them. More likely than not you'll get a special flavor of Inceptor, boxed with a Blood Angels upgrade set ala these Hounds of Morkai.

Blood angels are proably just getting death company assault intercessors

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

they got DC intercessors in PA. most likely the unit will be expanded to allow you to kit them as assault marines, much like vtern intercessors are

It doesn't really matter if assault marines have 1W or 2W. The models have what you're using them for. There are no jump chainsword Primaris. They can't really be confused for Assault Marines.

They can be used Counts As - most people won't mind a counts as for modeling looks with something this similar Marine with jump pack chainsword and pistol.

That said some people will not like it, and there's nothing wrong with that. They are a specific unit, and people used to looking at them and remembering X unit stats like Heavy vs regular Bolt Pistol could get annoyed at having to flip the script on them.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Sure, you can use them as counts as, but is the aggro of having to explain every single time you want a game that your primaris marines are the soon to be squatted oldmarines really worth it?

Of course you can do this. If they're painted in your Chapter colors only Marine players will realize the difference. Honestly in about two to three editions there probably won't be a difference between Primaris and classic Marines anymore and people use their older Marines as new Marines, just like players always did with other models that got new kits.

Oldmarines look so silly that I wouldn't be bothered at all if somebody decided to upscale their tacticals, assault marines and devastators to the primaris chassis. Quite the contrary.

''Counts as'' is generally allowed in a game friendly setting.
Tell your opponent to play one unit as ''counts as''. Should be no problem.
In a tourney, ''counts as'' is usually forbidden.

Counts as is usually forbidden, conversions are not.

This would clearly fall under the later. Unless there is some huge gameplay advantage to a conversion there usually isnt a problem.

I can write on the bases if need be and might do that

I'll be using them as conversions instead of count as I guess since they are a kitbash of the two kits.

Local GW or at home. Local card/comic store has no gaming right now due to COVID. I've also not played 9th edition at the 2k point level yet so I'm fairly new

If that's the case then do it. Anyone who rejects a game or unit because of that is someone you aren't going to want to play with anyway imo.

should be zero issues. Power armoured warrior on 32mm base with jump pack and close combat weapons. Yeah, who cares what type of armour it is? The jump pack immediately informs you that this unit is NOT a current Primaris variant.

From a pure book-keeping perspective treating them as Vanguard Vets is better because Assault Marines are W2 A1 and VVs are W2 A2, that way you won't have to remember that your jump-pack guys have different base stats than the rest of your infantry.
