I am a returning player after being away for 10 years and am confused on the new rules for space marines chapter tactics.

I am trying to figure out if the chapter tactics in the new Space Marine Codex replaces the ones in the supplements. For example: do Salamanders get both the Forged in Battle AND the Promethean Cult rules? I see everyone talking about how powerful Salamanders are with their fire and melta weapons but without the Promethean Cult I must be missing why they would be...

Thanks all,
CuJo

A pure Salamander army got both Battle Forge and Promethean Cult. However, if you include any models that is not Salamander into your army, unless they are Assassins or Inquisition, your marines lose the Promethean Cult rule. Same principle applies to every other chapters.

What are space marines using to hold backfield objectives? We don’t have the numbers to just drop pointless bodies in the rear with their sole goal being to not die.

Thunderfires and Whirlwinds seem like the logical choices if you can keep them out of LOS, but they don’t strike me as very competitive.

Maybe 5 men Heavy Intercessor Squad, especially the Executor Bolt Rifle ones. Very good at sitting in the backfield ruins near home objectives, being hard to remove and can throw some decent firepower down range.

Just any good long ranged unit will do.

The answer to that is going to very much depend on your chapter. Personally, anything in the troops role is going to be reasonable because it has obsec. Infiltrators are a great choice because the 12" DS null zone is great for protecting the objective particularly if you can hide the squad in terrain.

Outside the troops category ATV, Eradicators, eliminators, Hellblasters, sternguard, dreadnoughts, thunderfires and tarantulas (Map dependent) all have the range and damage output to sit back

Shooting based chapters might favour gunline options, salamanders will often favour a few big shots such as eradicators or eliminators over massed firepower while BA/FT/SW may favour options that can double in CC
