I am trying to figure out if the chapter tactics in the new Space Marine Codex replaces the ones in the supplements. For example: do Salamanders get both the Forged in Battle AND the Promethean Cult rules? I see everyone talking about how powerful Salamanders are with their fire and melta weapons but without the Promethean Cult I must be missing why they would be...
Thanks all,

Ok, so,
SM are pretty complex when it comes to detachment traits (remember when 8th launched they claimed all the rules for your unit would be on a Datasheet?).
If a detachment is purely SALAMANDERS (or Successor with Inheritors of the Primarch chosen), the detachment gains the Forged In Battle Trait. This applies even if you have a detachment of, for example, Adepta Sororitas in your army.
If your army totally consists of ADEPTUS ASTARTES units (excluding AGENTS OF THE IMPERIUM and UNALIGNED units), your army gains the Combat Doctrines effect. This won't apply if you bring the above Adepta Sororitas detachment, but will apply if you bring, for example, a detachment of ULTRAMARINES (as they have the ADEPTUS ASTARTES keyword).
If your army totally consists of only models with the SALAMANDERS keyword (or the same <CHAPTER> keyword if a Salamanders successor), then the entire army benefits from Promethean Cult, which grants a bonus while a specific Combat Doctrine is active. If you bring a detachment of ULTRAMARINES or Adepta Sororitas or any detachment not of the same chapter as the first, this won't apply. This does apply to any Salamanders successors even if you choose a build-a-bear pair of traits rather than taking Inheritors of the Primarch. These are all cumulative, so if you have an army that is purely composed of SALAMANDERS (or Successor with Inheritors of the Primarch) units (i.e. no allies), all units in your army will benefit from Forged In Battle, Combat Doctrines, AND Promethean Cult. Basically it's a "bonus" to play pure Astartes rather than souping in allies, designed for a time when souping in allies gained you
CP rather than costing you
CP. Add this to the fact that Eradicators are a good 20
ppm underpriced (taking a page from Riot's book, eh
GW?), and the recent change to Melta weaponry, Salamanders melta weaponry can reliably delete pretty much anything and everything off the face of the board.
