If I want two captains in a list of SM I will have to pay 40 points to super boost one of them to a super captain. Is that correct?

No, upgrading a captain doesn't remove the captain keyword.

Codex SM: page 98

"Each time you upgrade a unit, it gains a new keyword... These units are still considered to be the same datasheet for the purposes of any mission rules that limit the number of times any particular datasheet can be included in your army."
Note, it does not replace a keyword, but rather gains a keyword.

Due to 'Detachment Abilities' (pg. 93, Codex SM), you can only have 1 captain model per detachment. You will need additional detachments to take additional captains.

Alternatively, you can take a non-Adeptus Astartes detachments and you will not be liable for 'Company Command' rule of the detachment abilities outright.

That's one way to do it (although, be aware that we're not sure on the points cost yet - it's 40 points on the page where the Chapter Master rules are, and 30 points in the points list at the back of the book).
The other way is to take more than one detachment, because you're only limited to one Captain per detachment.

While this is correct, gaining Chapter Master keyword also gives you a rule that specifically allows you to take that Chapter Master in addition to another Captain. It's a specific permission (page 98).

No, you can't. Edit. I see that rule now.

Upgrading a unit allows it to gain a separate 'Chapter Command Keyword' in addition to it's existing character-type keyword (i.e. captain).

So, if a Captain was upgraded to a Chapter Master, it will have both CAPTAIN & CHAPTER MASTER keywords.

Yeah. Another detachments is an alternative. But 30/40 points is well worth the CP I save.

We will see. SM in general have very good characters, and SW more so. I probabky want some chaplains for +2 to charge and/or rune priests.

Nothing says you can't take a Captain, make them a Chapter Master and then instead of taking a second captain just take a Chaplain. Potentially even make them a Master of Sanctity. The upgrade can be worth it and of itself. Or not. some will end up being better than others.

If you're looking at multiple captains, and a chaplain, and a rune priest you're starting to sound like a two Bat Det army as that's four HQ's.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

That was fixed in SM FAQ.

In fairness, it was only fixed today.
