All about avoid confusion for the mook in the street.

As others have said, we know what a given GW related symbol means within its context. And whilst lines are of course drawn (say, a certain Eurasian symbol co-opted around the late 1930’s is a clear no-no), some can still convey an entirely different meaning outside of that context.

Now most people won’t be bothered, or even recognise the symbol one way or another, such as a Maltese Cross. But, to some of the public it will have strongly negative connotations, which can lead to misunderstandings and entirely avoidable arseache.

And let’s face it, left wing as I am, it only takes someone “with an agenda” to really make life more difficult than it strictly needs to be - especially if they apply that agenda to 40k as a whole, where they’ll no doubt manage to construe to find all manner of things for them to further object to and berate others over.

I mean, the whole satanic panic was a thing, and all based on utter, utter nonsense beyond “me no like book, me try get banned”.

Could be worse though.

Could be the Maltese cross with the “purge the unclean” slogan...

We'll find out soon enough eh.

But we've already seen how futile it is to try and preemptively cater to that sort of puritanism MDG - they turned the "okay" hand sign into a "symbol of white supremacy" based on 4chan trolling.

We live in a world of memes and social media overreaction, in the space of a day a very noisy - but objectively tiny - group of people online can decide a sports team mascot is a symbol of their politics, or that a polo shirt is verboten because Bad Men wore them, or as above fall for some trolls and make themselves look dumb but then refuse to back down.

I mean, imagine what tabletop games would be like today if everyone had just caved in to the demands of the fundies back during the Satanic Panic?

No, the solution here seems very simple and obvious to me - Games Workshop make the products they want to make, and people decide whether or not they personally want to wear them. If enough people actually care, the product won't sell and they'll discontinue it, and if it stays around then evidently it wasn't actually a problem.

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.

"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal

I've ordered a Gloomspite Backpack, phone case, and a couple of t-shirts, I am probably going to order some more of the T-Shirts. I find that the shipping for me (In Canada) takes a long time, as they come from Europe, but I'm happy with what I've gotten so far.

I think no one here is demanding to stop selling them, we're just kind of amused that no one though that the plain white templar cross on black hoodie might make the wearer look like those other templar-cross afficionados.
Less of a "STOP SELLIING IT" more of a "wear it, but don't be surprised if one of them Boys with Pride gives you a funny salute across the street".

The fact that GW has still not produced rippers in this form is clearly criminal!

Also I'd say its a holy quadrinity or whatever - because you've got to have gryph hound!

I would buy a plushy Gryph-Hound. Would be even better if they made a squeaky-toy Squig for pets.

Does anyone actually know a plush toy producer?

Because surely this is a license just looking for a home?

I for one would buy many plush squigs of varying sizes and designs, so I could stuff a cupboard full of them, treating the next person to open said cupboard to a Squigalanche.

Gryph Hounds
Rippers
Squiggs
Nurglings
Snotling/gobbo
Servo Skull
Giant Rats (skaven)

That's 7 off the top of my head that would work great as plush toys and would likely sell really well.

I'd like to point out that the straight-winged eagle design was almost universally dropped after WW2 because of bad associations.

I'm with Grotsnik here. Nobody's saying that GW shouldn't be allowed to sell it, but IMO it's a legitimate concern that people might interpret it the wrong way lacking the satirical context. I'm all for reclaiming symbols that have been co-opted by unsavory groups. I'm just not looking to fight that battle on a trip to the grocery store.

I'd totally buy a t-shirt with just the Mechanicus skull/cog, the Inquisition ]I[, or the Tyranid symbol. Subtle designs with simple iconography are great (yeah no not buying a t-shirt of Big Dude With Sword, thanks), just need to be cognizant of which ones have connotations.

You people have horrible taste. Plush Dreadnoughts. Big. Boxy. Should be easy to make and will love you eternally. Wants nothing more than to go back to sleep and get hugged.
And yet I haven't been able to convince any plushie makers I know to make one even at an extra markup because they don't want to make a new pattern. There's one I thought would go for it and makes really sturdy, hefty plushies, but turns out she has a multi-year backlog so I haven't even tried asking her.
I have needs. Games Workshop should fulfill them. Don't they want my money?

On the topic of Plushies, there's a good few online SMALL stores that can custom make plushies. And usually, if it's custom made, you don't run afoul of the whole "This is Copyright".

My daughter loves Bendy from BatIM, but all the plushies out there suck/are the deep gold-yellow and black. So we had someone just make her a nice sized plush of Bendy that's the classic white and black like the ingame cartoons.
If you look, I'm sure someone can make your Ripper/Squig/Dreadnaught/Nurgling if you are driven enough.

-Edit- I just read the post above mine, and yeah, the backlog and having to sometimes come up with a new pattern is rough. Definitely a barrier for the product.

The Finnish airforce announced earlier this year that they were to drop their swastika insignia that had been in use for over a hundred years (i.e. preceding the nazi regime and atrocities). I guess they hoped the association could be reclaimed, but they finally gave up after having to explain the symbol's use for literally decades.

Thankfully, the fleur-de-lys has thus far escaped very specific bad connotations, so while people might wonder why you're a particular fan of the medieval French monarchy, the city of Florence or the boy scouts, at least they won't think you're a fascist for walking around with Adepta Sororitas-themed clothing, so that's something.
